Aside from the way it ended, another reason England fans remember World Cup 2002 fondly is that's the England team that beat Germany 5-1 in the qualifying stages in what became an absolute howler of a game. If they'd stayed on form they might have had a genuine chance of winning the tournament. 🤩

    You don't see them bragging about it so much anymore though because eight years later Germany beat England 6-1 in a qualifying match for World Cup 2010. The crop of players England had at the time weren't the best, the tabloid press had gone feral, and the FA went through a lot of England managers trying to make the best of a bad situation. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I was pleasantly surprised to see Gareth Southgate turn that around after he was appointed England manager in 2016 and brought through the talent he'd been cultivating in the more successful England youth teams.
