  7. Update. Another article made it through peer review (this time at #JAMA Network) asserting that the #NIH policy requires NIH-funded authors to pay #APCs.

"Cost of Article Processing Charges to Adhere to National Institutes of Health Public Access Policy."
    dx.doi.org/10.1001/jamainternm
    (#paywalled)

The authors are actually confused and inconsistent on this point. On the one hand, they make clear that compliance through PubMed Central (#PMC) is free of charge. On the other, they say (in Table 1) that green OA articles needn't pay APCs to comply with the older NIH policy but must pay APCs to comply with the new NIH policy.

PS: Some publishers -- like Springer Nature and Taylor & Francis -- do charge APCs to NIH-funded authors to publish in their journals, and don't let those authors publish in their no-APC non-OA journals. They even frame those APC-based paths to publication as ways to comply with the NIH policy. But the NIH policy requires deposit in PMC (#GreenOA), which is free of charge. These publishers are charging APCs to publish in their journals, which is entirely optional and not required by any policy.

Apparently #Anthropic has been ordered to pay ca. $1.5 billion for #copyright #infringement on about 500K #books they used to train #Claude along with the order to destroy any #unauthorized copies & #pirated files they possess:

Considering the amount of money they stand to make from Claude's continued existence, this seems like little more than a slap on the wrist to me. Also, I find it hard to believe how it will be possible to enforce the order to destroy the illicit files.

  20. Update. #ThomsonReuters fired a senior attorney for her role in the employee letter protesting the company's allegedly illegal conduct.
    404media.co/thomson-reuters-fi

Billie Little, the fired attorney, says she was fired for an "unspecified code of conduct violation." She believes she was singled out because she was the most visible leader behind the protest letter. She's suing for reinstatement and damages, and for firing her in violation of the Oregon #whistleblower statute. She maintains that the data the company sold to #ICE "circumvented and violated state sanctuary laws, privacy protections, and the Constitution.”

  21. The world’s leading cancer charity to stop funding open access publishing because of hybrid journals

As numerous posts on this blog have emphasised, the underlying idea of open access (OA) – allowing anyone to read and share published academic research for free – is great in principle, but in practice has failed in important ways. That’s because traditional academic publishers have subverted the open access model to such an extent that the costs for research institutions of publishing in […]

  37. Walled Culture the book, three years on

Walled Culture the book (free digital versions available) was launched just over three years ago. One of the little-known but extremely telling episodes in the history of modern copyright, discussed in Walled Culture the book (free digital versions available), concerns the Marrakesh Treaty. 42. The truth about copyright: even successful authors can’t live on the royalties publishers pay them

Copyright is built on a lie that most people seem to accept: artists can make a decent living from the current system of rewards that copyright provides. As Walled Culture the book (free digital versions available) explores, all the data about artist remuneration shows that isn’t true. Alongside such dry statistics, it’s good to hear about the personal experiences of creators, and I […]
