@martincigan You mean as a kind of magic math that always works? Maybe, but then the person who presents such a figure needs to explain why they believe so. I am pretty sure the reason is simply that this is the easiest function to fit.
Pro tip: If you want to expose a #datascientist for not being a #statistician, (and you could do this here too), ask them: What precisely do these shaded areas around your curves represent? Stammering guaranteed.

So I’m inclined to trust their reporting.
With that said, the usual #statistician’s disclaimer applies: #multiple #testing is hard. So, for that matter, does the #medic’s and the #biologist’s, because there are multiple kinds of multiple testing going on here. The more you test, the more you will screw up.

I'm a #graduate student at #CurtinUniversity. My thesis is on developing analytical techniques, perhaps #Bayesian, for identifying and classifying variable and transient astronomical sources, namely #BlackHoles and #NeutronStars, in large galactic surveys.
I'd say I'm more #statistician than #astronomer, with a dash of #ComputerScience too.
I'm a huge #rstats fan but now leaning into #python for my current research. I'm also something of a conference committee addict.

I just lost my uncle 10 minutes ago. the last blood relative uncle I had. He'd suffered a fever when he was younger that caused him to have long-term physical or cognitive/intellectual disability. He was anything but.
My uncle Kenny lived with his mother, my grandmother for decades. He LOVED the #StLouis #Cardinals... he grew up with Ozzie Smith & was an amazing #dataScientist and #Statistician. He had decades worth of cards, notebooks, index cards full of stats on players
