The first inhale, the last exhale, and the enormous unexamined middle. A human being spends nine months underwater and then, in a single violent second, becomes an air-breathing animal. We tend to picture that first breath as a natural unfolding, the lungs simply beginning what they were built to do. The reality is closer to a demolition. Before birth the lungs are not empty. They are filled with fluid secreted by the lung tissue itself, and that fluid has to go somewhere before air can enter. Labor begins clearing it. The surge of adrenaline and noradrenaline that accompanies delivery flips the epithelial cells lining the airways from secreting fluid to absorbing it, and sodium channels in those cells begin pulling the liquid back into the tissue and the bloodstream. The mechanical compression of the chest during a vaginal delivery squeezes out more. Even so, at the moment of birth the newborn faces a set of collapsed, wet sacs whose internal surfaces are stuck together by the surface tension of water, and it must pull them open with nothing but the muscles of its own chest and diaphragm. Prototype for a new turntable switch array is promising. Copper contacts on flexible plastic make a circuit with a fixed bar of copper.
I still need to wire up the rest of the switches, but my soldering iron broke somewhere along the line so need to wait for a replacement to arrive.
I'm hoping these home made switches are effective and robust enough to make into a final version. Needs to be a bit smaller overall though.

Draft continental #strategy on free movement developed
Free Movement of Persons is an integral part of the #African #integration and along with the African #Passport is one of the flagship projects of #Agenda #2063.
Pursuant to this goal of integration, in January 2018 the Protocol to the Treaty establishing the African #Economic #Community relating to free movement of persons, right of residence and right of establishment was adopted by the #AU Assembly. This was followed in March 2018 with the Agreement Establishing the African Free #Trade Area, the Protocol on Trade in #Goods, the Protocol on #Trade in #Services and the Protocol on Rules and #Procedures on the #Settlement of #Disputes.
As a follow up to this, the #AfricanUnion (AU) and the Regional Economic Communities ( #RECs ) have developed a draft joint continental strategy to accelerate the Right of Entry for the Protocol to the treaty establishing the African Economic Communities relating to the Free Movement of Persons, Right of Residence and Right of Establishment. The strategy aims to ensure that RECs and Member States popularise and promote the adopted African Passport as one of the key #mechanisms through which free movement of persons will be realised.
