  8. Meton - Virtual Mechanical Moon and #Eclipse #Calculator

This awesome tool was created by prof. em. Thomas Weibel from Basel, Switzerland. Here is the beginning of the description from the website:

"The metonic cycle is a period of 19 years corresponding to almost exactly 235 synodic lunar months or full cycles of #moon phases, named after meton of athens, a greek #mathematician and #astronomer from the 5th century bc."

    I love it :-)

  13. A small object past #Pluto may have a thin #atmosphere
The possible atmosphere around #2002XV93 “suggests that small icy worlds beyond Neptune may not be as inactive or unchanging as we often assumed,” says observational #astronomer Ko Arimatsu of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in Mitaka. “Until now, Pluto was the only trans-Neptunian object with a confirmed atmosphere.” He and his colleagues report the observations.

  25. #Hubble in a death spiral that could end as early as 2028 without a reboost
The post on Bluesky by #astronomer #JonathanMcDowell is a stark reminder that Hubble is heading back to Earth, possibly sooner than previously thought, as its orbit decays.
Hubble was launched into #LEO in 1990, in bay of Space Shuttle Discovery. While it remains capable of pointing its instruments and returns breathtaking imagery over more than three decades in orbit, it cannot raise its altitude

  30. As an amateur #astronomer and #astrophotographer, I often use parsecs as a unit of measure.

Turns out a certain well known #astrophysicist hates them.

    And for good reason.

  35. Happy birthday to Caroline Herschel (1750 –1848) a trail blazing woman in #astronomy. Hers was a real life Cinderella story where rather than marrying a prince, she made a life and career for herself. Marriage was her expected role but she was deemed unmarriageable, since a childhood bout of typhus stunted her growth. Her mother thought she should train to be a servant & purposely stood in the way of her learning 🧵
