Happy birthday to #astronomer Vera Rubin (neé Cooper, ‘28-‘16) & her discovery that angular motion of galaxies deviates from predictions, 1st evidence for dark matter, now known as 5x as common as matter & the stuff which dictates dynamics of galaxies & evolution of our universe! The Nobel committee waited 3 years after she died to reward another for the theory of dark matter.

In collaboration with Soton Astrodome I used some of their old acetate star maps (from @esoastronomy I think) to make double exposure cyanotypes about space & memory.
I used 30 star maps to make a star.
Would LOVE to carry on this theme but I used all the sheets I have.
Any #astronomer out there (hello @astroroyalscot.bsky.social )know of acetate star maps that could be donated?
I can donate some of the art in return.
Collaboration ideas welcome! -

Happy birthday to #astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt (1868-1921) who set the scale of our Universe. My portrait of Leavitt is printed in silvery lavender ink on Japanese kozo paper. Behind her is a line showing stellar luminosity (capital L with subscript sun-symbol, a circle with a dot) as a function of time (t). She is printed over constellations in gold (Cepheus, Cassiopeia, Draco, Ursa Minor & Andromeda). 🧵1/

Today is the solstice. The longest day in the northern hemisphere, but which is the shortest night? Last night or tonight?
Thank you. 🌞🌓 -

#NASA Completes #NancyGraceRoman #Space #Telescope, Ahead Of Schedule And Under-Budget, named after NASA's first chief #astronomer, is headed to space in September aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy, months ahead of its originally planned May 2027 launch.
Roman's primary mirror is 7.9ft same size as #Hubble's but 1/4 weight, sending visible and infrared light to two sensors. First is Wide Field Instrument, 300-megapixel camera. Second is #RomanCoronagraph, a polarized sensor.

Clouds of #water #ice thread stellar nurseries in #MilkyWay
Findings support idea water pervades galaxy’s planet-building material
Reaching hundreds of light-years, icy clouds drape two of galaxy’s active #star-forming regions, #astronomer Gary Melnick and team report. Findings paint broadest picture of #interstellar ice’s distribution, and confirm predictions water, key ingredient for life on Earth, occurs across huge areas of interstellar #space.

Meton - Virtual Mechanical Moon and #Eclipse #Calculator
This awesome tool was created by prof. em. Thomas Weibel from Basel, Switzerland. Here is the beginning of the description from the website:
"The metonic cycle is a period of 19 years corresponding to almost exactly 235 synodic lunar months or full cycles of #moon phases, named after meton of athens, a greek #mathematician and #astronomer from the 5th century bc."
I love it :-)

A small object past #Pluto may have a thin #atmosphere
The possible atmosphere around #2002XV93 “suggests that small icy worlds beyond Neptune may not be as inactive or unchanging as we often assumed,” says observational #astronomer Ko Arimatsu of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in Mitaka. “Until now, Pluto was the only trans-Neptunian object with a confirmed atmosphere.” He and his colleagues report the observations.

New episode comes out tomorrow!
We'll be meeting a new (to us) historical figure in #american #astronomy & exploring the science of sunspots.
Anyone have a guess on which #astronomer we paired with this topic??
