A newly found world blurs the boundary between #planet and #moon
The find reopens an old fight over what makes a planet a planet
Object is as massive as Jupiter and orbits a #browndwarf — a body that fuses deuterium in its core but is too small to burn hydrogen and shine as a true #star. The brown dwarf loops around a small star. That hierarchy of orbits makes system, called CD-35 2722, the first with known “exosatellite”, #astronomer Kevin reports

Happy birthday to Sophie Brahe (born either Aug 24, 1559 or Sept 22, 1556 -1643) horticulturalist, astronomer, genealogist, & alchemist with the gardens at her brother #astronomer Tycho Brahe’s Uraniborg estate, where she often assisted his research, alchemical tools & illustrations of the supernova she observed as Tycho’s assistant.
Tycho trained her in horticulture & chemistry but initially discouraged astronomy. 🧵1/

Happy birthday to #astronomer Vera Rubin (neé Cooper, ‘28-‘16) & her discovery that angular motion of galaxies deviates from predictions, 1st evidence for dark matter, now known as 5x as common as matter & the stuff which dictates dynamics of galaxies & evolution of our universe! The Nobel committee waited 3 years after she died to reward another for the theory of dark matter.
