  1. The Pipes Family Foundation has joined the fedi, and we look forward to connecting with our friends in the St. Louis community and the nonprofit sector. We maintain a blog where we document our Foundation activities as well as explore our family history and how it ties into the history of the region.

  3. This will be *fun*: got an email from administration this morning touting "a new look for WashU", and already the university homepage redirects from wustl.edu to washu.edu. The FAQ promises that email addresses and everything else will be switched over the next few years.

A whole lot of accounts, links, etc. will be breaking; changing URLs every few years is ridiculous. (My email was artsci.wustl.edu, is now wustl.edu, and apparently soon washu.edu.)

  4. "Asia in St. Louis" began as a community-based learning course from my colleague Prof. Ulug Kuzuoglu; it is now housed at #WashU libraries, and contains information, stories, and reflections on the role of #AsianAmericans in #StLouis

  5. (Hopefully final) #WashU wall update: the fences are now gone as well; everything was normal on campus today. No communication from administration since graduation.

I don't know what's happened to everyone previously suspended; hard to find out now that the Riverfront Times is closed. stlpr.org/2024-05-22/rft-sold-

  6. Just learned about this brand new release from St Louis Symphony Orchestra:

Leonard Bernstein, Serenade after Plato's Symposium and John Williams, Violin Concerto No. 1

I believe this is the first #SLSO release with Stéphane Denève conducting. Apparently Williams was present at the recording.

Streaming at the link, and lots of other places too, I'm sure.

  11. Apparently #WashU did reply to the #StLouis city government:

'The aldermen have proposed a resolution condemning the university’s response to last month's protest ...

Aldermanic President Megan Green, who was at the protest and was among the faculty members suspended ... said the letter from the university raised further concerns.

“They're defining any subject matter that makes them uncomfortable as being violent,” she said. “And that's very problematic.”'

    stltoday.com/news/local/govern

  12. ' “The use of suspensions is sort of one of the primary tools of private universities ... It's what [the] general counsel tells universities to do,” he says. “Put folks on paid suspension, make the process as vague and complicated and endless as possible, and in the meantime, we'll figure out what the next steps are. And hopefully some of these people will just go away.” '

  13. At least #WashU matched the fence/wall tarp to the color of the "in St Louis for St Louis" marketing banners. /s

I took this picture today, three days after graduation. No ID checkpoints, but only a few gaps in the fence, some of which were watched by radio-equipped "event staff". Very quiet on campus, few people around. No idea how long administration is planning to leave the walls in place.

  14. Different approaches, indeed.

"The protest ... went off largely without incident—a marked contrast to what happened over the weekend at Washington University ... St. Louis University officials took a different approach on Wednesday. The police presence was fairly light, and demonstrators could move about campus without any resistance from law enforcement. Police shut down part of Grand Avenue while students sat in the street listening to speeches."

  15. @nix That's quite a nice contrast to what happened at #WashU Saturday! And Grand is not a small side street; I'd guess that was rather more disruptive than people on campus on a weekend.

Does that mean the county police were at Washington University? Or were both #STL city police but asked to do different things?

    #StLouis

  16. @janhoglund Sarah Kendzior's entire post is so heartbreakingly open and honest.

"I covered the Ferguson protests ten years ago. I am used to seeing innocent people beaten and arrested in St. Louis. I am not used to seeing it happen at Wash U.

But if there is a definitive story of the past decade, it is how the net of oppression has widened. Whether through covid, climate change, or the loss of hard-won rights: we are all targets, we are all disposable."

    #WashU #StLouis sarahkendzior.substack.com/p/t

  17. The #protests aren't malicious and violent. The overwrought and intellectually dishonest administration response is. The protesters were nonviolent members of the #WashU and #StLouis communities, who are now banned from campus, with faculty forbidden from contacting students as if THEY were the threat to students' well-being. It was the admin's decision, not a student demand, to evacuate the library. The buildings on campus are still locked.

I just set up this instance. I tried it yesterday and ran into all sorts of problems so I rebuilt the server and tried again using the "develop" branch. This seems to be better for now. I apologize to those who may have received multiple follow requests.
