"The Nazi summer camp behind 'Camp Siegfried' had a St. Louis counterpart

Most Americans know Nazi Germany had youth camps.

Far fewer realize America had them, too.

On Aug. 20, the St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum will present a staged reading of 'Camp Siegfried,' a play inspired by a real summer camp on Long Island operated by the German American Bund, a pro-Nazi organization that sought to spread Hitler’s ideology in the United States before World War II.

For St. Louis audiences, the story hits especially close to home.

The Museum’s current exhibition, 'Nazis Next Door: St. Louis Faces Nazism in the 1930s,' explores how the Bund also established a camp along the Meramec River. That makes 'Camp Siegfried' more than a story about another place and another time.

    A real American summer camp

    The title sounds fictional.

    It isn’t.

Camp Siegfried operated in Yaphank, N.Y., where American teenagers swam, hiked, danced and played sports. Beneath those familiar summer camp activities, however, organizers promoted Nazi ideology and loyalty to Adolf Hitler.

Playwright Bess Wohl uses that setting to tell the story of two teenagers searching for identity and belonging. Rather than focusing on the battlefields of World War II, the play examines how extremist ideas can quietly take root through friendship, community and the desire to fit in."
