  1. #ToySwaps and the #CircularToyEconomy: How to Raise Waste-Free Kids

    Ash Gregg, July 24, 2025

"Kids outgrow toys fast — sometimes faster than we can recycle the packaging. What starts as a sweet moment of play often ends up as clutter, then waste.

Behind those bright colors and fun shapes lies a hidden environmental truth: the toy industry is one of the most wasteful in the world. Most toys are made of plastic. Few are designed to last. And almost none are built with end-of-life reuse in mind.

But there’s a better way — and it doesn’t mean denying kids joy or imagination. In fact, it can inspire more of both.

Welcome to the circular toy economy: a movement built on #sharing, #reusing, #fixing, and reimagining play. It’s not just good for the planet — it’s good for your home, your budget, and your children’s values."

  11. Interesting read looking at recycling and the knee jerk reactions to e waste and it’s importance to economies in poorer countries. If we applied a similar approach to clothing, I wouldn’t have had clothes to wear as a kid. I still get the majority of my clothes from op shops beyond the ones I make myself and buy new like underwear.

  12. #OrilliaOntario - Need something fixed? #Orillia #RepairCafé returning in April

Event taking place April 5 at St. James' Anglican Church

    Mar 14, 2025

"Local residents are invited to bring their broken or torn possessions to St. James’ Church on Saturday, April 5 (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), where 'fixers' will be on hand to make repairs and turn their 'trash' into 'treasure' at the eighth Orillia Repair Café, which takes place twice a year.

"The event is supported by local volunteers and Sustainable Orillia, St. James’ Anglican Church and Lake Country Time Trade.

"Light refreshments will be provided as well as child-friendly activities. A new feature this year will be '#BookSwaps,' one for adults and one for children. The café has a friendly and fun ambience and combines an enjoyable family activity with a rewarding outcome.

"Annalise Stenekes has led the project since its inception and has gathered a dedicated and talented team of fixers who will attempt to repair a variety of items, including bicycles, lamps, home appliances, sewing machines, jewelry and audio/visual and computer equipment. Small furniture items will be repaired, clothing and footwear mended and toys given new life.

"Last year, 230 kilograms of items were given a new lease on life, diverting potential waste from the #landfill and saving an estimated $1,000.

"'#Repairing and #reusing broken items, as opposed to disposing of them and purchasing new ones, is a practical and meaningful contribution we can make for our environment,' says local resident Wendy Kirk. 'The Repair Café is also a feel-good place — at times the joy is tangible when someone’s prized item is restored to its former usefulness.'

"Repair Café events are happening around the world, saving money, reducing landfill waste, cutting CO2 emissions, promoting learning and fostering community connections."

  17. I had a whole watermellon and after scooping it out I cut the outer skin away and saved the rind and pickled it.

I did it sometime last year I think, but I followed a different recipe. I think last time I just made a salty brine like liquid. But I made a mixture of soy sauce, salt water, cider vinegar and sugar... I need to leave it for a few days to do somethin.

You can also use the rinds in stirfries and stuff like that too.

  18. @mu This is one kind of reuse center that I found on the web. It's something a local library could sponsor. Also, there are places that do that with building materials (#HabitatForHumanity #ReStores).

    #CreativeReuse Centers Benefit #Communities & the #Planet

    By Maureen Wise

    "What Is a #CreativeReuseCenter?

"A creative reuse center is a #CraftThriftStore and so much more. It’s a business or nonprofit organization that collects #usable materials, leftovers, or surplus creative supplies and redistributes them to the community for reuse. These organizations accept donations from individuals as well as manufacturers, industry partners, and businesses. Donations can be in the form of leftover craft supplies such as your craft stash. They may also include cabinet or flooring samples from a home renovation company or the end of a roll of vinyl from a sign manufacturer.

"Each center makes decisions differently and has different donors and #donations rules, but the ethos is consistent: They help people see the potential in useable waste as art. The creative possibilities of cast-off materials are limited only by the imagination of the artist. Creative reuse is all about #upcycling and #repurposing: elevating and #reusing an unwanted material or item into something entirely new with purposeful value."

Thought it looked colourful and chaotic but like simple. Thought about making prints haha.

  20. I always find air matresses break so easily... they always seem to leak and never last Dx

I tried to make a jacket thinking it would work similar to a hard sythetic leather material. I was kinda wrong, it's kinda just stiff. Pics tommorow.

The material can be sewed rather easily and can be superglued very effectively. You could totally make an old one into a picnic blanket!! Maybe tarp?

  23. I do like picking up old PCs people throw away and either scavenge parts or bring it back to a usable state, usually running a lightweight #linux distro. This isn't for nostalgia but because free useful stuff is always nice - in the past I'd give the fixed up/upgraded old PC to a relative or friend who might need it, but this latest one is a Dell Optiplex 755 from 2006 and few people would want these unsexy utilitarian PCs these days.

Except for me because it's fun.

  27. This video is a really really good example of the Circular Economy in action. It’s proper, ground-up, thinking. It’s putting Recycling and Reusing at the very heart of every decision and every step. It’s about starting off on the right foot and staying on the right path.

Builder Robbie Neville starts this video by saying “This industry was built on unbridled destruction and consumption of natural resources (what we are doing) starts with just understanding what we already have. We’re not even scratching the surface of that.”

How true is that? Reusing, in the building industry, is almost non existent. Robbie shows us in this video what can be achieved, if we make reusing an integral part of the construction industry. As well as thinking of climate change and social justice, every step of the way.

[Notes that accompany the video] Starting out as a builder, Robbie Neville noticed a truly shocking amount of building waste headed to landfills around Australia with no thought given to how it could be used. So he started salvaging it himself, and so began Revival Projects. A multidisciplinary practice that exclusively operates with existing materials and sustainability in mind. Building Australia’s first inner-city timber mill, repurposing entire heritage brick buildings bit by bit, and saving mountains of still useful timber from demolition projects. Repurposing it into shopfronts, apartments, houses and everything in between, Robbie and Revival projects have built a life based on pushing the building industry outside its comfort zone. They live on the cutting edge of re-use and recycling in Australia, and are one of the few practices like them around the world.

“I have a dream of a demolition plan, where every single element on that page, noted for demolition, has an associated note or instruction around what is to become of those materials, how they’re to be handled, where they’re to go and how they might be repurposed, in buildings of any scale. There’s no way that you have a use for every single component of that building. But if you’ve reached a conclusion that you’re going to take accountability for those existing materials and how they handled, I expect we’ll see some really creative outcomes and collaborations.”

There are so many other cool ideas discussed in this video. Other great projects and initiatives Revival Projects are working on. The idea of reusing materials on site. Urban tree reclamation. There’s even an App! It all highlights how poorly we are doing, when it comes to reusing, recycling and sustainability. More importantly it shows us what can be done, how it can be done and the change in thinking that is needed. The idea that “its not waste, its a potentially valuable resource that just needs thought and consideration on how it can be used,” should inspire us all.
