for me going to laser over inkjet was a good choice - the refill toner will last 3000 pages - I attached via usb to keep it simple. all that said i have not used it all that much - too stressed out with my list of must do items but i am grinding it down slowly, I may yet make some qrcodes, tagclouds, sales copy etc I think a color laser printer would be nice but too expensive to operate and maintain #printer ptsd

Years ago, I bought A Year of Zero Waste Sewing (lizhaywood.com.au/a-year-of-ze…) as a zine, with the intent to print and bind it when it was completed.
Then our printer was acting up, and there were other reasons to delay, so I postponed the printing and not exactly forgot about it, but it went quite low on the list of priorities.
Now I could have used a printed version of the pleating pages from December, so I decided it was a good time to print everything and fit binding it between other projects.
We have a new #printer, we've had it for quite some time and have been quite happy with it.
It printed every number of the zine with very little issues¹, with automatic two sided printing, everything was working fine
Until December.
It didn't print December. out of toner. for the first time since we bought it.
It claims we had been warned about it. Probably on a notice board in the usual underground corridor with no lights.
They know.
¹ and those were strictly between keyboard and chair

Please share your laser printer experience from this decade.
Especially if the printer is:
- Not yet enshittified.
- Small business, 50 prints/week.
- B/W
- Reasonable toner/spare part prices.
- Real PCL capabilities.
- Cross Platform (Win/Linux/Mac)
- Wifi and/or Ethernet
- A4 is enough
- No need for FAX, seriouslyHelp me get my love the best possible advice 🩷

The best thing about this printer is that I could use it without having to create an account. I did not see that coming.

Dear #FediTechSupport, anyone got any idea what's going on with this printer?
It's a Brother colour laser (HL-L8250CDN). Sometimes it prints a page or two OK; sometimes I get the waste of toner on the right. Yesterday, it printed three pages and switched suddenly from dark to clear mid-page. Then it printed 12 pages OK. The next six pages were all dark again.
Today, I did a couple of tests. The first page was fine. The second, a minute later, wasn't.

When Mariner 4 sent back the first close-up of Mars in 1965, the printer was too slow for the engineers waiting on it, so they pinned the raw numbers to a wall and coloured them in with pastels bought from an art shop down the road

<p>The first photograph of Mars almost never reached the world because a printer was too slow—so NASA

I like my #Brother printer but the #privacy implications of using it seem to be getting increasingly noxious.
Has anyone done network analysis to figure out what "types of files" are sent to their servers?
viz. "Your Files. When you print or scan certain types of files through the App, such files will be automatically sent to our server [...] It is your discretion whether to print or scan data that includes any personal information...."

Open Printer | Crowd Supply

> Finally, an open hardware printer you can actually understand, repair, and upgrade
Sehr nice.

Behold! A revolutionary #CLI that turns all those #YouTube #guitar videos into #PDF #tabs 📜, because who doesn't love converting free video content into static paper piles? 🤔 Now you too can turn your five-minute rockstar dreams into an afternoon of #printer #jams and tab confusion! 🎸🖨️

I'd happily hire anyone that knows the ins and outs of #PBX, #printer servers, and #mail servers. So basically the whole trinity of shit when it comes to IT infrastructure.
Not because it is in any way relevant for the job, but those people will:
1. possess the ability to work themselves into a knowledge context and understand stuff on their own
2. are basically immune to eternal suffering 🔥

My printer died. It's old enough that it can't get serviced, nor replaced by another unit. I knew it was going to brick eventually, but of course it happens at the wrong time. There's never a good time, right?
New printer it is.
<sound of flushing as bank account disappears><choke>
I won't be buying anything for a very very long while now.

One of the best-selling #3D printers in the world now needs #permission to print, after a 2025 #firmware update locked seven core functions behind Bambu's own #system. They called it #security, but the #community cracked it within days, and then #Bambu Lab tried to sue the #developer who gave owners back #control.

My printer became officially inefficient. I need to buy a new one. I'm thinking about investing in an ink tank printer.
What brands do you recommend for Linux?

🍻 Pour one out for my homie.
Finally had to retire my trusty HP LaserJet P3005DN. Built in 2008, 69,593 pages printed over its life.
Bought used in 2014 for $80 at RePC. I printed ~13K pages. Printer crashes even when printing built-in reports. Paper jams often.
Aftermarket toner 7 yrs ago gave me 7,728 pages, still reports 64% life and estimates 13,740 pages left.
It's been a great run, bud.

I happened to have a Lex Light fanless computer (called Scooby) lying around. It fitted the bill as a CUPS server: it was running Debian Wheezy (right age), and, most importantly, it had a parallel interface which the TSP700 used.
I installed CUPS, installed the Star driver, and configured CUPS using Lynx. I was really pleased to get the CUPS test-page printout after about 5 mins work. :ablobcheer:
