Ditching Amazon Fire TV for a custom, self-hosted Smart TV experience on 2011 Mac Mini's.
For years, I used Amazon Fire TV sticks. They worked, but the ads, tracking, and clutter became annoying. I wanted a clean, personalized media center that felt like a dedicated appliance.
I found a few 2011 Mac Mini's on eBay and turned them into media centers running Debian Linux with a stripped-down Xfce desktop environment.
The Build:
Hardware: Intel i5 Mac Mini's.
OS: Debian Linux + Xfce (lightweight, flexible).
UI: A custom Python/Flask web app serving a kiosk-mode interface via Brave Browser.
Config: Entirely managed via JSON and CSS. No desktop, no panels. Just a curated home screen of Flatpak apps and web apps.Features:
Privacy: No ads, no tracking, no Amazon account required.
Single-Task Machine: Apps launch fullscreen, right-clicking is disabled, kiosk mode.
Remote Ready: Fully keyboard and remote navigable (MX3 Pro wireless PC remote).
Robust: Auto-restart script ensures the dashboard never stays closed.Use Cases:
Media center PC: A TV-connected mini PC with Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, and YouTube.
Workplace dashboard: A wall-mounted display showing internal tools, dashboards, or informational kiosks.
Infotainment kiosk: A public-facing screen with curated apps and no way for users to escape to the desktop.
Repurposed hardware: Give an old laptop or mini PC a second life as a dedicated appliance. If you can think of a use case, you just set the apps and tools you want, point it at the URLs or Flatpak apps you need, and let it run.
I wrote a blog post on the setup and the specific tools (like wmctrl and input-remapper) I used to make it feel like a Smart TV. Github link is in the blog post.

One of my 6 bush cucumber plants, growing out of old car tires. Tires are lined with rocks & wood chips & filled with homemade soil mix. All of the plants have cucumbers growing on them. This one has 6 cukes growing from it. You can see 3 of them in this photo.

Fortunately the DIY communities found a solution, they’re repurposing these GPUs to gaming desktops, once of such is the BC250 community (for the AMD BC-250).
After finding a GPU (usually available on eBay), one can buy off-the-shelf parts and either 3D print a case, or buy a pre-printed one).
After assembling it and following the setup instructions, once has a gaming PC ready!

The ship I work on buys approx 1 tonne of "new" [former] t-shirts for cleaning rags every year. They come pre-cut into [almost] convenient size/shape for task. Purpose-made shop towels would be [slightly] more effective for task, cost considerably more, and wouldn't repose any material.

Weekend project.
I turned this old Android 8.1 phone into a dedicated mp3 player. I used ADB to remove unnessary apps. Even removed some apps that were part of Android to make it as barebones as possible. The music player is Musicolet 6.9. I then installed AnyHome as a launcher and set it to Always use. AnyHome lets you set any app as your home/home button. When the device boots it automatically opens Musicolet. Pressing the home button just opens Musicolet. I can still access Bluetooth and Wi-Fi by dragging down the system tray. Best part is no Google account or sign in required. I simply restored factory settings and side loaded the apps without needing to go to the Play Store. I particularly like Musicolet’s lock screen since it has the album art and player controls. I currently have it connected to a Bluetooth speaker in the living room and loaded it up with some synth wave music. It is connected to power and the display is set to always on. -
@cwicseolfor @ReneeWestberry #RepairReuseRecycle Internally I always add #Repurpose as an artist I can always see a new life for most objects. A teapot without a lid becomes an opportunity to create a tiny tableau, rusted flange washers become earrings as do easily sawn broken cymbals…😊
Even stale Cream of Wheat from the back of the pantry got a second life as faux stucco when I mixed it with the paint on the cat house I made to match my BFs house. 🤣 🤣 🤣

Used, wheeled, stand-up golf bags & used baby strollers are good for gardeners who are physically disabled, who are able to stand/walk independently but struggle with carrying heavier tools/supplies around. I used a heavy duty, used, free baby stroller, to tote my gardening tools/supplies when I lived on farm acreages. It allowed me to work more independently, tending to gardens.

I'm repurposing our old, rusty, kids playground swing/slide into functional garden trellises. The metal frame is solid & I can use it as part of cold frames, for Winter. Ruby will be helping me with this small project.

Another find from #TreasureHuntTuesday is this child's refrigerator. I couldn't pass it up because A: it's adorable and B: I was only $4 US. I am using it behind the deck bar to store glassware and other things it is important to keep clean and dry. #reuse #repurpose #recycle

"Clever Ways To Reuse Dryer Lint Around The Home
Whether you're trying to live a more zero-waste lifestyle or you simply want to keep your dryer in top form, look no further than the lint in your dryer vent! In addition to being a simple cost savings hack, it can protect your home from a dangerous, devastating appliance fire. Data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates more than 15,000 fires in the U.S. are caused every year by dryers, resulting in approximately $84 million worth of property damage. The culprit? Highly flammable lint that is constantly building up in the filter. Experts strongly urge laundry doers to clean out the lint trap after every single load, and to deep clean the dryer vent twice per year.
Most people are quick to toss their lint into the trash without batting an eye. However, this fuzzy byproduct has tons of clever uses around the home, so you may want to consider saving your dryer lint. We'll take you through some of our favorite hacks and show you why you'll never want to drop your laundry fluff in the garbage again. It's important to note that some of these tricks require lint that is free of fabric softeners, dryer sheets, or other other additives to avoid dangerous repercussions, but we'll call this out each time."

I repurpose used plastic knives & spoons as reusable plant markers. It's easy to wipe off old Sharpie ink with some baby oil, wash the plastic cutlery & reuse them many times. They're more durable than store-bought plant markers & easy to write on.

Here's yet another tech repurposing/recycling post! :neobot_box:
This USB SD card reader was DIY'd from a component I found in a trashed laptop someone had discarded and left on the side of a bin!
The laptop's SD reader daughterboard was really just an USB device connected to one of the motherboard's internal USB ports via a ribbon cable. So, after figuring out which pin is which, desoldering that ribbon cable and replacing it with a regular USB one, as one would expect, effectively turned it into an external SD card reader
At that point all I had to do was to find a case for it: I don't have a 3D printer, but trimming the board slightly and removing the plastic stands made it fit perfectly into this SD card holder, which does the job and is rather small all things considered!
(And yes, the irony of using an SD card holder as its case isn't lost on me! :neobot_flop_blep: )

Today on #TreasureHuntTuesday I found storage. Found a square rolling cart with a large central cavity and lots of pockets that fits all my bookbinding supplies so I can wheel it out of my studio until I need it. Also found three plastic sets of drawers for $4 US each: perfect for out-of-sight basement storage. I also found a set of shelves to hold machines I rarely use until I need them. This freed up space I can use for everyday purposes in my studio. #reuse #repurpose #thrift

I also found a folding bookcase, something I've been searching for for a while. One of the brackets to hold a shelf up was missing, with a screw in its place. In my mixed hardware bin I found a similar bracket normally used for mounting curtain rods. I cut a piece off the bracket to make it more suitable for this new purpose and it works a treat. Now the bookcase is renewed and sturdy. #reuse #renew #repurpose #vintage

Found an extremely poorly reupholstered little bench for $2.10. I only care about it's bones because I plan to cover it with leather. Perfect for putting on and taking off boots by the front door. :) #reuse #repurpose #recycle #LeathetCraft

I used to keep my cutting dies in the second drawer of this little tool chest but the drawers don't open all the way, the dies get mixed up and it's often hard to find the die I am looking for. I found this drawer at a charity shop for 75 cents. It's designed to hold Keurig cups but works perfectly for my dies. I can finally see and easily retrieve all my dies #reuse #repurpose #recycle #LeatherCraft #maker
