You've all outside the USA had access to DIY "balcony solar" for ages. In the USA, we are JUST NOW getting there. Maryland and Virginia are the first two states to allow DIY balcony solar.
Needless to say, companies are consistently sending me equipment by surprise. This thing lands in my hands last week....freaking marvelous !!
It took me 5 minutes to start producing power. Every bit counts in the living hell we now live in.

Ever since I got some new #Inverter and #Batteries for my #SolarPanels, I’ve been looking for a way to process the data they produce. To be sure, the manufacturer has a nice #WebApp but I wanted something I could tinker with. Therefore, a while ago, I bought a #HomeAssistantGreen, which is basically a #RaspberryPi #SBC which is pre-loaded with #HAOS and so is a functioning #HomeAssistant instance.

1/2 Today I finally set aside the afternoon to record my next #linuxaudio soliloquy #video for the #sample #challenge. 🤓
After about two hours of troubleshooting, though, I had to give up. 😞
Our new solar #inverter isn’t providing stable power—I can hear the #ups switching modes every now and then, clicking and humming when it goes on battery.

How's heating electrification going on the Isle of Dogs?
Octopus and Heat Geek are strong advocates and each is telling its story.
I rather like the Heat Geek model and the effort they have put into training the trade.
I took the plunge here as my 2006 machine was ready for the care home. I installed a new Bosch IDS inverter air to air heat pump.
It has been a learning experience. The machine modulates itself for low supply air temperature. The air leaving the register is 1-2C warmer than the return air entering the air handler.
This is very much akin to 40C flow temperature and modulating flow temperature in UK high efficiency hydronic heating. I've had to learn the same lessons. Put it in Auto and sit on my hands.
My machine is not cold climate rated so output rolls off below 0C. Our heating design temperature is -5C and we've seen -8C (17F) this winter. Brrrr. Aux heat was on most of that week. 5 KW of PTC heating. Big bill, that.

Today's little #solar #horror #chainreaction story:
1. A #toilet started running while we were away yesterday.
2. As a result, our #waterpump ran continuously.
3. The 1st #battery out of two batteries collapsed.
4. The #inverter kept pulling current.
5. The 2nd battery was hammered.
6. This damaged the inverter's DC power stage and deep discharged and damaged at least one of the batteries. And I was already frustrated that the @loveyoumore #icecream machine is still broken.
It will be good. 😇

Erfüllen die Kleinwechselrichter die es derzeit auf dem Markt gibt, die in der neuen #Steckersolar Norm geforderten Abschaltzeiten?
https://youtube.com/shorts/rg2gxCVWN_E?si=aPokjiIUciMLK1gv

**Emergency powering the home using solar in the winter time**
TL;DR
Yes, even in winter time with a weak sun, partial independence from the electrical grid is somehow possible for me using PV, house battery and smaller UPSes. It showed during the last outage event.
Extension of this mastodon post.
What happened
Today it was quite an interesting scenario that tested my independence from the electrical grid.
The power went out because of some renovation work on the grid nearby. I didn’t get the usual message from the local electro-distribution company. It looks like their messaging system failed again.
Being disconnected from the grid is usually not an issue (at least in summer), because I can switch the whole house to the PV powered inverter/UPS. In summer, the battery (20kWh) can power the house a whole day or more.
But now is winter and I didn’t know how long the outage will last.
After some days of thick fog and clouds, the battery was empty (22%).
And servers must run. It started with self-hosting some personal services, which extended to some professional services. And of course, the house should be warm too. But, the servers first.
The first line of defense – two small server/router UPS-es (Powerwalker) powered the equipment for 30 mins, and when they were almost empty, I decided to switched to the big house UPS.
The speed of discharging of the small UPS surprised me, because last time, they lasted for more than one hour. The beeping of one critical UPS speed up when it dropped below 20%. Afterwards I checked the stats in my Home Assistant and noticed a sharp drop between 60% and 20%. I need to explore this issue, maybe the UPS batteries are bad or a new load (server) I connected to the UPS lately kicked in and draw more power in that moment.
The PV production at that moment was only approx. 500W (of 12kWp). The house load was 600W.
I made a switch (I have manual switch grid – UPS for the whole house).
I was observing the charge of the house battery and luckily, the weak sun was enough to held the house battery charge steady at 22% for the next hour (see the plateau at 22% on this chart):
Of course I turned off the heat pump to reduce the consumption. When HP starts and if it detects the heating system water temperature is low, it draws a lot of power (up to 6kW). That would empty the battery quickly and I didn’t want to risk it. So I fired a backup wood stove to heat the house.
All equipment was running smoothly, the house was warm and I was drinking a tea in delight.
After 2 hours, the grid was restored. It was interesting how I noticed. I heard one small UPS beeped once. It looks like the inverter trips for a moment, when the external grid is restored. I checked the main electricity meter and it was true, the grid was back.
I switch back from inverter’s UPS to grid.
I was happy that this stress test in the worst (PV) conditions went ok.
BTW, it probably wouldn’t work at night. For such scenario, a generator connected to the inverter would be necessary.
After
I already have notification of grid disconnect in Home Assistant, which is quite handy.
After the event I created a new automation in Home Assistant: notify me when the grid is back, so I don’t need to check the electricity meter (or listen to the beeps of the UPS):Would a bigger house battery help? Probably not. After several days of no sun, it wouldn’t make a difference, because it would be empty too.

After 2 productive days, I spent the Thursday griping about the state of the world, and my now completely insane federal government, which handed its soul to masked thugs.
My back seems a bit happier, so later today, I'll probably again be deep into Operation Spring Cleaning 2021.
I'll get there. I'll get there.
Apparently, electricians need additional insurance to install solar power systems, even if it's just connecting an inverter to the mains. They'll replace the entire circuit breaker box, but won't make 2 connections to it without the insurance companies getting in the way. Seems odd, but whatever. Nobody has to climb onto the roof to do this. 🤷♂️
I put in a call to a solar installer. It's one guy...
"Press 1 to speak to the party you called."
...who plans ahead for expansion.

The EG4 system is quite robust. Initial R&D testing indicates that this could be a comparable replacement to the now discontinued Schneider XW platform (which was, without a doubt, the best and most robust off-grid solution available, but cost a fortune).
Findings so far are almost zero transfer time from grid to battery. Fired up a 2HP motor with 5kW heater effortlessly. Commissioning wasn't hard, but it's more complicated than your typical "home battery".
I still have a bunch of tests to run including generator support, the monitoring portal, smart loads, etc.

In other #home #hardware thoughts, I just had to replace my Panasonic microwave after it developed a front-panel fault which renders it completely unusable and, by all accounts, is de facto unrepairable. (The gist of it is that the power-level setting button becomes stuck "on". It's apparently a quite well-known problem.)
Anyway, it appears that since I last bought a microwave, Panasonic's patents on #inverter power control for microwave ovens have expired, because now multiple brands offer inverter microwave ovens. And that means that AT LONG LAST, I was able to find a microwave (a Toshiba, in this case) that has all three of my most important features — inverter power control, humidity-sensor "smart" cooking and reheating, and an actual, handle to open the door instead of a stupid pushbutton. Why do I hate door pushbuttons? Because inevitably they start sticking after a while, no matter how many times you take the damned oven apart and clean and lubricate the linkage, and then opening the door becomes a two-hands operation. One hand to push the unlatch button, and the other to get a grip on the door, which doesn't have a handle, and pull it open.
Yes, yes, yes, you idiot marketroids, I get it, the flush pushbutton is all sleek and shiny and modern and all that crap. But it doesn't work worth shit. It's awkward at best, and worse, it's unreliable. FORM IS SUPPOSED TO FOLLOW FUNCTION, not throw it out with the bathwater.
Every single microwave oven that has a door-unlatch button and no door handle has failed functional design 101. -
