Deye EV charger obscurities and register 0x103
TL;DR If you don't own a Deye inverter + EV charger1, don't read this. It's about some obscure settings that control communication of the inverter(register 0x103) with the ev-charger via Lora. It will bore you to death. It also summarizes the debate from github2. The issue - if you put your nose where it doesn't belong, you will not charge your beautiful e-car anymore Deye EV charger is controlled by Deye inverter via Lora or Wifi. Its working parameters can be accessed3 also by Home […]https://blog.rozman.info/deye-ev-charger-obscurities-and-register-0x103/

@MyKomment I can see this without any app, straight from my #solarPV #inverter 😄

I just finished the first version of a small software for managing the balcony solar plant of some family members. It works completely without any cloud or any other people's computers or even an internet connection.
There's three panels and an inverter with a battery. Any power initially is used in the household, then if anything is left it's put into the battery for later use, or if the battery is full, fed it into the public grid (to get a small financial compensation). Or if you want to, you can override that and just charge the battery, or even charge it from the grid.
Of course the inverter originally needs a cloud connection and comes with an app that needs a cloud connection and obviously is described as AI-powered very smart whatever. But there is a documented API for getting and setting some values! Interoperability! Without the cloud, there's hardly any logic built in. So I had to create it myself.
It's just a few HTTP requests, json, a SQLite database, and some very basic HTML.

You've all outside the USA had access to DIY "balcony solar" for ages. In the USA, we are JUST NOW getting there. Maryland and Virginia are the first two states to allow DIY balcony solar.
Needless to say, companies are consistently sending me equipment by surprise. This thing lands in my hands last week....freaking marvelous !!
It took me 5 minutes to start producing power. Every bit counts in the living hell we now live in.

Ever since I got some new #Inverter and #Batteries for my #SolarPanels, I’ve been looking for a way to process the data they produce. To be sure, the manufacturer has a nice #WebApp but I wanted something I could tinker with. Therefore, a while ago, I bought a #HomeAssistantGreen, which is basically a #RaspberryPi #SBC which is pre-loaded with #HAOS and so is a functioning #HomeAssistant instance.

1/2 Today I finally set aside the afternoon to record my next #linuxaudio soliloquy #video for the #sample #challenge. 🤓
After about two hours of troubleshooting, though, I had to give up. 😞
Our new solar #inverter isn’t providing stable power—I can hear the #ups switching modes every now and then, clicking and humming when it goes on battery.

Today's little #solar #horror #chainreaction story:
1. A #toilet started running while we were away yesterday.
2. As a result, our #waterpump ran continuously.
3. The 1st #battery out of two batteries collapsed.
4. The #inverter kept pulling current.
5. The 2nd battery was hammered.
6. This damaged the inverter's DC power stage and deep discharged and damaged at least one of the batteries. And I was already frustrated that the @loveyoumore #icecream machine is still broken.
It will be good. 😇

Erfüllen die Kleinwechselrichter die es derzeit auf dem Markt gibt, die in der neuen #Steckersolar Norm geforderten Abschaltzeiten?
https://youtube.com/shorts/rg2gxCVWN_E?si=aPokjiIUciMLK1gv

**Emergency powering the home using solar in the winter time**
TL;DR
Yes, even in winter time with a weak sun, partial independence from the electrical grid is somehow possible for me using PV, house battery and smaller UPSes. It showed during the last outage event.
Extension of this mastodon post.
What happened
Today it was quite an interesting scenario that tested my independence from the electrical grid.
The power went out because of some renovation work on the grid nearby. I didn’t get the usual message from the local electro-distribution company. It looks like their messaging system failed again.
Being disconnected from the grid is usually not an issue (at least in summer), because I can switch the whole house to the PV powered inverter/UPS. In summer, the battery (20kWh) can power the house a whole day or more.
But now is winter and I didn’t know how long the outage will last.
After some days of thick fog and clouds, the battery was empty (22%).
And servers must run. It started with self-hosting some personal services, which extended to some professional services. And of course, the house should be warm too. But, the servers first.
The first line of defense – two small server/router UPS-es (Powerwalker) powered the equipment for 30 mins, and when they were almost empty, I decided to switched to the big house UPS.
The speed of discharging of the small UPS surprised me, because last time, they lasted for more than one hour. The beeping of one critical UPS speed up when it dropped below 20%. Afterwards I checked the stats in my Home Assistant and noticed a sharp drop between 60% and 20%. I need to explore this issue, maybe the UPS batteries are bad or a new load (server) I connected to the UPS lately kicked in and draw more power in that moment.
The PV production at that moment was only approx. 500W (of 12kWp). The house load was 600W.
I made a switch (I have manual switch grid – UPS for the whole house).
I was observing the charge of the house battery and luckily, the weak sun was enough to held the house battery charge steady at 22% for the next hour (see the plateau at 22% on this chart):
Of course I turned off the heat pump to reduce the consumption. When HP starts and if it detects the heating system water temperature is low, it draws a lot of power (up to 6kW). That would empty the battery quickly and I didn’t want to risk it. So I fired a backup wood stove to heat the house.
All equipment was running smoothly, the house was warm and I was drinking a tea in delight.
After 2 hours, the grid was restored. It was interesting how I noticed. I heard one small UPS beeped once. It looks like the inverter trips for a moment, when the external grid is restored. I checked the main electricity meter and it was true, the grid was back.
I switch back from inverter’s UPS to grid.
I was happy that this stress test in the worst (PV) conditions went ok.
BTW, it probably wouldn’t work at night. For such scenario, a generator connected to the inverter would be necessary.
After
I already have notification of grid disconnect in Home Assistant, which is quite handy.
After the event I created a new automation in Home Assistant: notify me when the grid is back, so I don’t need to check the electricity meter (or listen to the beeps of the UPS):Would a bigger house battery help? Probably not. After several days of no sun, it wouldn’t make a difference, because it would be empty too.
