someone was saying about how expensives cars are to run? ..... well... it's been a week of finding out!

$1200 on Monday for tires for the 2019 Kona.

and today the 2012 Prius (262,000km) got her issues dealt with. Looks like the (original) radiator and water pump had some leaks which caused the "master-alarm" that forced us to take it in.

Final bill $2799. Parts and Labour were about 50/50.

So ya... $4000 in the span of 3 days is not fun. But it wasn't completely unexpected. Both cars are fully owned/bought new. So they continue to serve us well now and hopefully for a good bunch more years.

I do still need to get the Kona in for annual brake service.

*deep breath* not this month. 😭

Agree. As an agnostic driver of my friend's Model Y (back before #DOGE) I concluded that the real genius of #Tesla was the charging network they built from scratch.

"I'm on my third #Prius and I had NO IDEA how robust the Tesla #charging network is. I felt like I was seeing a parallel universe for the first time. It's basically squirreled away in obscure parking lots and back alleys. This makes sense, using space that is otherwise underused and local businesses benefit because drivers have 20-60 min of time to kill while they charge.

For example, Green River #Utah, a town of less than 1000 off of I-70, has 8-12 supercharger stations in the parking lot of the John Wesley Powell River History Museum (worth a visit!). We pulled in, plugged in, went across the street to the Tamarisk Restaurant to eat dinner (nice place!), and by the time we were done the battery was full. We then drove on."

Also, if you intend to take one of those SOTA, they have a quirk that in order to go uphill, the Gen I actually has to draw down the battery. Going from sea level to 8000ft, in winter, I depleted the battery. After temps dropped into the 20's with 50-75 mph gusts (almost died of hypothermia when my stove broke), returned to the car, where that cargo box had been ripped off and out of the mounts by extremely high winds in a pass... dunno if it got to 100mph, but possible. It slammed the box down on the hood leaving a massive dent. The car refused to start, not because of the dent but because it was so cold and battery depleted. After duct taping the cargo box back onto the car (which worked), was able after 10 min to finally get the car to turn on so I could shift it into neutral, and we were able to get the car going downhill where the regen braking was able to charge up the main battery enough it went into "crippled" mode and would drive 20 mph or whatever... eventually the engine + regen braking was able to pump enough juice into the battery the car reset and went back into normal mode. At some point after that, I sold the car and swapped it for my parent's 4Runner (which I still drive), they were going to sell it because it had more than 50,000 miles 🙄 (they started driving in an era of crappy cars)
