Working with vintage power today from the early 1990's when my career started. The newer motor drives are a small fraction of this size. Most of the bulk is magnetic chokes and capacitive resistive snubbers filtering the voltage spikes from the semiconductor triacs. The other half of the cabinet, not shown, are even more massive transformer filters. We are documenting why this motor drive has failed increasingly over the last several months. The motor it powers is only 150 horsepower, or about 110 kilowatts.

In #germany we are confronted with a high demand of #green
#energy transports from wind turbines at the coastline to the industrial areas, especially in the southern states bavaria and BW.Now, at least ten years late, after green party got in the recent government, the needed #highvoltage power lines get upgraded.
So i was courious how much energy can transfered over a upgraded 380kV line with 4 wires bundled per phase.
Nordkurier press hat an article about the ostsee-havel powerline north of berlin city, and told the new line will transfer up to 4000amps current after the upgrade.
So one such power line can transfer 1.5GW electrical power.
To relate this: whole country can need up to 64GW power if the industry production goes to full scale.
Private housholds may do only something like 20% of this energy consumption. -
Not sure how I missed this but it totally friggen rocks. This was also my oldest boy’s favorite AC/DC tune.

It lives! WIIFM in gorgeous ruby red crackle tube! Bending the 15mm ruby wasnt too bad. It did have a moment when the last electrode cracked and I had to empty some of the fill to weld and bend a new "W" tail back in (an then refill with crackle). I also only filled this one to 8 torr pressure, making it even more conductive than the clear one.
I used a 15kv 60ma aging transformer to give it a mini bombard across the tube. It is nice to see when the gas has actually flowed and get a sense with the Kill A Watt how much current its drawing.
Seems to be aging out of the typical ruby mess- these colored glass non phosphor coated tubes hold onto moisture and other impurities and must be heated extra hot. 800 F for 7 hours with 6 hours under vacuum should do the trick. The bombard with the aging transformer was nice for cleaning things up as well.
