  1. Q to the HAOS community out here.

I just had a power outtage and my old Intel NUC run Home Assistant did not wake up after the outtage.

How do I set it to power up automatically after a power outtage? Can I even do that? Some BIOS setting in NUC, or go Raspberry?

  3. I was wondering why #Matter is working better than any connected devices I've had before, and now due to the latest #HAOS update I can see that my devices have generated a pentagram. The combination of the #occult, #witchcraft and #technology has so far resulted in a 100% success rate in button presses over the network.

  7. Got some #Zigbee #Lightbulbs so that I can time #lights with my instance of #HomeAssistant. Previously, they were plugged in via a timer, which had to be adjusted every so often as the length of the day varies in length. Now the timing should follow time time of #Sunset automatically.

  11. Two free services which I used are #DuckDNS to give me a #URL and #LetsEncrypt to provide #SSLCertificates. I had to open up a #Port on my #Router for #PortForwarding and to make sure that the #HomeAssistantGreen is attached to a fixed IP address locally.

There are several online tutorials to perform this operation and I would advise anyone wishing to do so to look at them carefully before proceeding as a misstep can lead you to locking yourself out of your own hub.

  13. So far my #HomeAssistant instance had been running on the local subnet, behind the #Router's #Firewall and so was inaccessible from outside my house’s network. However, I’ve now got it onto the #Internet. Of course, there are inherent risks and potential problems with this if malicious actors want to crack the system and so I made sure that it’s only accessible as an #Encrypted connection via #HTTPS rather than #HTTP.

  15. Right… So, the #Proxmox is running nice. I have found a spare 2T hard drive (2,5”, 5400rpm, unfortunately), but it will have to do for now.

Now I need to plan on how to migrate #HomeAssistant to a #HAOS VM. I have tested backup import and most of my things were surprisingly there. I’m reluctantly thinking about moving the #Zigbee dongle, but… Not sure how it’s gonna go with #HomeKit integration. I have easy over 80 devices…🤡

I still need some kind of redundand storage…

  19. Ever since I got some new #Inverter and #Batteries for my #SolarPanels, I’ve been looking for a way to process the data they produce. To be sure, the manufacturer has a nice #WebApp but I wanted something I could tinker with. Therefore, a while ago, I bought a #HomeAssistantGreen, which is basically a #RaspberryPi #SBC which is pre-loaded with #HAOS and so is a functioning #HomeAssistant instance.

  23. I know #Frigate can do face recognition. It can do that locally, right? I wouldn't need a cloud AI?
And Frigate does record, correct? (I haven't had hardware to actually have hands on with it)

If I wanted to run #HomeAssistant, as a bare metal #HAOS install, and Frigate installed as a Home Assistant add-on, what hardware specs should I be going with?
I know HA Green just... won't.

  25. Which gen AI is best suited for Home Assistant and ESP32 wibe coding? I am getting frustrated with both M$ CoPilot and Claude Sonnet 4.6. I have two small projects. One for temp display and another for Nordpool electric prices now and two hours ahead. #haos #esp32 #waveshare #wibecoding #AI

  29. @jortmentink I had a similar experience when I finally moved #homeassistant off of docker to a #HAOS vm on proxmox.

Totally painless and took me < 30m, most of which was verifying things because it went so smoothly I was suspicious 😃

  31. If you are using #HomeAssistant OS #HAOS (the pre-made appliance image), and have it in both - trusted LAN and untrusted appliances networks - consider upvoting this issue: github.com/home-assistant/core

HomeAssistant Container installations are now - by default - more secure than the HAOS installation, which defeats the purpose of a „simplified“-installation method and would demote the appliance to being less capable than container or untrustworthy on the trusted LAN.

I'm running my VM in proxmox, but I assume that VirtualBox would be just as good.

I didn't mean to sound like I was criticizing your choice to run in docker - I did that for literally years before deciding that not using HAOS was adding more aggravation than it's worth. Some integrations just run better on HAOS or (at least for some 3rd party ones) aren't even tested on anything else.

That said, there are a lot of third party things you can run outside HAOS - I run Node Red, Frigate, zigbee2mqtt, zwaveJS and mosquitto in independent docker containers on other hosts and have HAOS connect to them.

It sounds like you have a lot of interesting hardware in your existing automation system that may or may not have integrations already.

One way to work around that would be to run an MQTT server like mosquitto in a docker container, then update your existing bash scripts write data to MQTT entities so HA can read the entities.

If you format the MQTT entities right, HA will automatically discover them as devices or sensors without you having to create custom MQTT sensors. That auto-discoverability format is a little finicky, but if you're comfortable with python I wrote (with a lot of recent improvement by Steffan Pankratz) a library that makes writing automatically discoverable entities easier.

I ended up moving my #homeassistant server from docker to HAOS in a #proxmox VM because it's better supported.

I still run zigbee2mqtt, zwavejs and Mosquitto and #NodeRed in docker containers, but my core HA is #HAOS now. Anything I can run in docker, I do so I can spread them across the cluster, but if something's annoying to configure I want the option of running it as an add-on where it'll be supported.

I know I could download an older #HAOS disk image, back up, make a new VM, and restore but frankly that's more hassle than I want to deal with.

It would also be useful in the case where someone hasn't updated in many months and may need to move forward in steps to deal with versions that had breaking changes.

  40. Is there a way in the UI for me to update #HAOS, but not to the most current version?

Basically most months I want to update to the last version of _last_ month, not the current bleeding edge of _this_ month.

I feel like this can't be that unusual a desire and I'm probably not looking in the right part of the UI.

Are you using the built-in Zwave or zwave-js? I run zwaveJS and it has been reliable for me.

Extra bonus was that since I run it in docker I can run it on a different host than the proxmox node that #HAOS runs on.
