OMG! A wild ride… “Based off the newest tranche of emails and texts released by the Justice Department this weekend, Epstein, at the very least, believed that he was orchestrating the downfall of the global order in the 2010s. In June 2016, he emailed venture capitalist, early Facebook investor, and Palantir founder Peter Thiel, writing, “Brexit, just the beginning.” He then laid out the most succinct mission statement we currently have for what Epstein was trying to accomplish. “Return to tribalism,” he wrote. “Counter to globalization. Amazing new alliances. You and I both agreed zero interest rates were too high, and as I said in your office. Finding things on their way to collapse was much easier than finding the next bargain.” 😮

Read that again: “Epstein… believed… he was orchestrating the downfall of the global order”.😐

Been wondering ever since I read that terse email “Brexit, just the beginning” implying that #Epstein & #Thiel think they caused it. Now this rationale. ☝️

Can this really be so? Or is this #billionaires delusion? How could we know, how could we test for the truth of this hypothesis?🤔

  25. Psychology of Delusions: Why We Cling to False Beliefs

Delusions aren’t just quirky thoughts; they’re deeply held beliefs that defy logic and evidence. They’re like stubborn weeds in the garden of the mind, refusing to budge even when confronted with the most compelling counterarguments. But why do they take root in the first place? Often, it’s because they serve a purpose, acting as a psychological shield against the harsh realities of life. Think of them as a mental coping mechanism, a way to cushion the blow of painful truths or overwhelming anxieties. The DSM-5, the psychiatrist’s bible, defines them as fixed beliefs resistant to change, often arising from complex emotional and cognitive landscapes. They’re not mere whims, but rather a reflection of a deep-seated psychological need.

Perception, delusion, and reality are like three intertwined threads, each distinct yet constantly interacting. Perception is how we take in and make sense of the world around us. Reality, though a slippery concept, is generally understood as the objective truth, independent of our individual biases. Delusions, however, are like tricksters, masquerading as interpretations of reality, especially when our minds need a comforting narrative to shield us from the harsh glare of truth. The key difference? Delusions persist even when confronted with a mountain of evidence to the contrary. You might see a shadow and, quite rationally, assume it’s just that – a shadow. But a delusional mind might interpret that same shadow as an omen of impending doom, even when the light clearly reveals its true nature.

Challenging a delusion head-on is like poking a hornet’s nest. You’re not just questioning a belief; you’re threatening the very foundation upon which a person’s psychological stability rests. Imagine someone convinced their long-lost friend is still sending them letters, despite evidence to the contrary. Presenting them with proof of their friend’s passing might trigger denial, accusations of forgery, or even a complete rejection of the system. It’s a defensive maneuver, a desperate attempt to protect a fragile sense of self. Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, recognized this phenomenon, noting that dismantling illusions can lead to a psychological unraveling. The backlash can be fierce because, in their mind, the person is fighting for their emotional survival.

Yet, there’s hope. With careful and empathetic guidance, it’s possible to gently nudge a person towards a re-evaluation of their delusional framework. Carl Jung, a pioneer of analytical psychology, believed that true insight comes from within, not from external criticism. Allowing individuals to question their own assumptions, at their own pace, can lead to a more lasting and meaningful realization. This is why the adage “Don’t mess with people’s delusions” holds so much weight. Direct confrontation can be like ripping off a Band-Aid too quickly, leaving the wound exposed and more vulnerable than before.

Humanity has a knack for weaving illusions into the fabric of our cultures, politics, and religions. Plato’s Allegory of the Cave paints a vivid picture of this. Prisoners chained in a cave, seeing only shadows projected on a wall, mistake these shadows for reality. When one prisoner escapes and sees the true world, his attempts to enlighten his fellow prisoners are met with disbelief and scorn. This allegory highlights the uncomfortable truth that challenging collective delusions can trigger hostility and resistance.

But here’s the real test of us: can we, or should we, even strive to live entirely without delusions? On the one hand, intellectual honesty demands that we seek the truth, no matter how uncomfortable. On the other hand, some illusions, like a touch of self-deception, can act as a buffer against the anxieties of existence. Nietzsche, the philosopher of the Übermensch, even argued that certain illusions are life-affirming, fueling our creativity and helping us cope with the bleakness of reality.

In a world often perceived as cruel and chaotic, delusions can offer a sense of solace. Some find comfort in rigid belief systems, while others cling to unwavering optimism or an exaggerated sense of control. These illusions act as psychological scaffolding, propping up our emotional well-being. They may not be rooted in logic or morality, but they can become essential tools for self-preservation.

However, we must also acknowledge the darker side of illusions. When they morph into widespread ideologies, they can justify violence and oppression. Collective delusions, or myths, can warp our moral compasses, leading to the exploitation and harm of others. History is littered with examples of this, from totalitarian regimes to colonial conquests, each fueled by distorted narratives that masked injustice.

Can we ever truly escape the clutches of delusion? Human cognition is remarkably adaptable. Through philosophical inquiry, scientific discovery, and introspection, we can challenge and refine our illusions. But complete eradication of self-deception is a rare feat. At best, we cycle through illusions, trading one for another that seems more beneficial or less harmful. Ideally, we replace delusion with knowledge and acceptance, but even our understanding of reality is constantly evolving, shaped by partial truths and inherent biases.

We stand at a crossroads, caught between the need for psychological comfort and the pursuit of moral truth. Delusions can cushion us from life’s blows and even inspire creativity. But left unchecked, they can fester into social and ethical maladies. To truly understand these “warped reality fields,” we must recognize their potential for both harm and creative expression. They can propel us to imaginative heights, fueling art, literature, and innovation, but they can also trap us in denial and destructive behavior.

“Don’t mess with people’s delusions” is both a warning and an invitation to engage thoughtfully. We must respect the emotional function of these beliefs, but we cannot remain silent when they cause harm. The key lies in finding a balance: empathy coupled with a commitment to truth, ethical responsibility, and personal growth. In a world that’s constantly changing and often harsh, a little psychological sedation might seem necessary, but critical thinking and moral vigilance are equally crucial if we hope to build a better collective reality.

  26. Chaos;Head was first released in 2008 for PC, followed by an expanded version with new endings in 2009 called Chaos;Head Noah. A double pack – Chaos;Head Noah and Chaos;Child – was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2022 with a nice steelbook and game case inside a card sleeve. It also comes with a digital code for the soundtrack. Chaos;Head was released before Steins;Gate by 5pb and Nitroplus, a fact I was unaware of. I thought that Steins;Gate was the visual novel that started the entire Science Adventure series. I think, however, that it isn’t a bad place to start. I enjoyed both Steins;Gate and the crazy alternative story Steins;Gate 0, about which I haven’t written anything yet. I still have my extensive notes on Steam, so maybe someday!

Chaos;Head Noah stars a male otaku called Takumi Nishijou living in Shibuya. He is on the verge of being a hikikomori. He’s also a hero inside a MMORPG called Empire Sweeper Online or ESO, having built his beloved avatar KnightHeart with unwavering dedication. Inside his closed online community and guild he’s the max levelled, better equipped, most skilled player everyone looks up to, whereas outside he’s a self-hating, anti-social, misogynistic loser. He also collects action figures from his favourite anime shows – his waifus. Since this blog serves as a tribute to my waifu, I can relate. I just happen to be very faithful to a character of which there aren’t any collectibles made because she’s evil as all hell. Takumi’s waifu is not overdressed, conflicted and overly serious like mine, she’s a cute pink-haired anime girl called Seira and a part of his delusions as all waifus seem to be.

Takumi is an asshole, a whiny teenager, irritating, socially awkward, scared of the air he breathes, but also terribly relatable. I personally don’t like him because I was a bit like that in my teenage years and young adulthood. I wasn’t perfect, I never strove for perfection. If I wasn’t playing video games or reading, I’d still prefer the company of my own thoughts than of people around me. I may not have been as socially awkward as Taku, but I had my idols, I was superstitious, I had little rituals. Now I’m over all of it, but characters like Taku aren’t unfamiliar, even when I skipped his exaggerated meltdowns and frowned at his lack of courage, I would have reacted in the same way, maybe. Taku’s destiny in the game is twofold – he is both himself and a delusion of his own making. Haven’t we all been there?

    Rimi embracing Takumi

Whether he wanted it or not, Taku had to at least engage in some dialogue with a school mate and, as the story developed, meet the mysterious female characters carrying beautiful swords across Shibuya. The action is set at the heart of a series of murders called the “New Generation Madness” (New Gen) and the impact the murders had in the media, online and in the society at large is well represented in the mass hysteria building around the case. While the police investigated the murders they eventually interrogated a very scared Taku as he was getting unwillingly more involved and absorbed in the paranoia surrounding him and his delusions.

He was approached online by a certain Shogun who left creepy messages in the chat and then disappeared. A supposedly close online contact – Grimm, who also played ESO – was also strangely invested in the murders. Taku would hallucinate about one of the murders and meet Rimi Sakihata at a crime scene before the actual crime happened; a girl for whom he developed feelings he didn’t seem to be able to process. He would be stalked and confronted by Yua Kosunoki, an older student who was also working with the police. He was approached by Ayase Kishimoto who told him he should get a Di-Sword about which he would learn more with the help of Sena Aoi, Kozue Orihara and Shogun himself. The story is long and all these characters have their backstories, told through small bits of fiction mixed with reality, of self-made delusion born from past traumatic events.

Sena Aoi and Kozue Orihara with their Di-swords

Soon everyone will be on the same page about the big conspiracy behind the New Gen killings and the tech company Nozomi Group’s true intentions behind the creation of Project Noah II. In a nutshell it’s a machine with the power to create illusions which, through shared recognition, become real in the eyes of those it can reach. At a certain point in the game, the player is invited to do an optical illusion test. There’s a dot and a circumference on the screen and with our eyes focused on the dot, we should bring the screen closer to us and see that the circumference disappears and reappears at times. By making use of these blind spots the accumulation of energy generates impulses leading to reality recognised as true by shared experience, that is, when a delusion is “real booted” in the real world. Delusions with no “real booting” are just errors perceived only by Gigalomaniacs like Taku and the aforementioned girls. They have the ability to boot delusions into the world without the influence of Noah II.

This part of the story reminded me of an X Files episode where a creature moved with recourse to these blind spots. No one could see it passing through a crowd because it had the ability to identify the blind spots of everyone it came across, and move only in those. If someone knows which episode it is, please tell me because I’d love to see it again!

Sena, Takumi and Kozue taking a picture together

Even though the game plays as a visual novel with minimal player input, at least in the common route, there’s moments where we can choose to see a positive, neutral or negative delusion from Taku’s perspective. Any of the delusions can unlock tips for our collection and new CGs so it’s recommended to watch them all. Tips are also featured in Steins;Gate and are excellent to learn interesting scientific concepts related with the main theme which in that case was time travelling and in the case of Chaos;Head is the perception and manipulation of reality. After I finish the common route I’ll do all the others with the help of a guide, as I usually do with traditional visual novels.

I liked Mia Mulder’s vid on it. Institutionalisation should always be with fully informed, non-coerced consent, where remotely possible.
One simple test might be: let the staff stay in the incarceration facilities for a week. If they don’t want to, ask them why not? Would they want someone they love to stay there, and why or why not?

Many diagnoses are just checklists created and used by people who read a lot of books, wrote a few papers, and had other similar people vouch for their understanding of the fundamentals (as they understood them at the time).
While practical work and dedicated study are important and valuable, so is the lived experience and personal interpretation of the people directly affected.

Within the past few months, I had someone diagnose me with mixed personality disorder. What I expect they did not note was that this interaction was based on talking to me for 40 minutes after I’d had 4 hours of sleep, with no context from my partner or anyone else who knew me.
They did not look at the extensive notes I was asked to bring. Finally, the appointment started late because reception did not inform the clinician I’d arrived. First topic of conversation? Neither of us knew what the appointment was for.

I know the NHS has been defunded for decades, mental healthcare is deprioritised, and my many intersections of identity make it difficult to find any professional who wouldn’t need at least 3 full hours to get a baseline understanding of my experiences. Equally: that’s not my problem.
