I felt like Cassandra today - the prophet who was cursed by the gods to never be believed.
It was my first appointment with my new psychiatrist. It was for a disability assessment. I swore I would go there and make myself understood. I wanted him to understand how I am frozen, how I struggle to sustain the normal hum of life - and if i do sustain it it feel like an act, my heart's not in it. How I just want to sit in a chair and wait for it all to be over.
I wanted to explain about how the universe breaks apart if people get annoyed, how I have to hit myself until that feeling goes away. How my world has shrunk into small lists of safe foods, safe activities, safe clothes.
I told him I felt I had never had an authentic relationship and he just stared at me.
I listened to me explaining things, smiling and laughing, and I thought what the fuck are you doing you idiot?
Then the hour was up, and he said I had persistent psychotic symptoms so he would provide a positive assessment for disability. So that's a win, but the psychotic stuff is not the problem!!!! (currently)

I am very disappointed with MIND. We don't need them spreading the "dangerous paranoid schizophrenic" trope as well.
The article quotes an "expert":
“People with schizophrenia do have an elevated risk of violence compared with the general population, even after accounting for socioeconomic factors, but the absolute risk is small. Only a minority will commit a serious violent act,” he said.
“That risk increases when other factors are present, particularly drug or alcohol problems, a history of violence, or having been a victim of violence themselves. The important point is that treatments we already have, and which are widely available, can bring that risk down.”
So basically, the risk of violence increases for the exact same reasons as for non schizophrenic people. What's the point of even mentioning the schizophrenia? Maybe we need more public awareness about how some people who catch the flu can go on to commit violence?
I accept of course that people with "schizophrenia" are often tired, confused, emotionally overwrought and desperate. If someone has a predisposition to violence, that pressure obviously won't help.
But linking an entire person's behavior to one diagnosis is the classic "trans broken arm" error. You have a broken arm, but you're trans, so let's refer you to a gender clinic.
Also no mention of the medical trauma that probably contributes to people's habituation to violence. Calocane had been sectioned multiple times and subjected to forced medication. That is traumatic even if it is "medical care".
Many studies have shown the "meds for life" model favored by western psychiatry does not lead to improved long term outcomes. The west has the worst outcomes for "schizophrenic" people, not the best. I am not anti medication, my own story is fighting (non violently) to get prescribed antipsychotics and I will never forget the relief they brought. But self-regulation, acceptance and evolving your relationship with your experiences are possible for many people, and this can help people reduce or end their antipsychotic medications.
I also note the treatment for Calocane's violence is presented in the article below as just schizophrenia meds. He's thought to be violent because of the schizophrenia, so treat the schizophrenia. But he should be treated for the violence and anger, separately from any medication regime.
Ok, but the man is not "pretending to hallucinate", he is just saying nonsense. That's not hallucination. Hallucinations are like additional perceptions that other people don't have. If the hallucination is the sort of one that gets identified as mental illness, then the extra input is probably accompanied by an overwhelming emotional salience that makes you look crazy to other people.
Just saying random words and nonsense is not the same. Saying that is hallucination shows a fundamental misunderstanding and disrespect for people with "psychosis".

One aspect of #disability #accessibility that I feel is criminally overlooked is being mindful of #schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
Please, please don't joke around with common psychotic triggers, at least without a clear content warning on it. It's not funny.
Examples?
Any absurdist shitposting that implies common psychotic narratives (stalking, shadow people, cryptids, paranoia, mind control, fake reality etc.), especially if deliberately directed at the reader!
Even worse if it's trying to use a meta level to 'convince' the reader that they can't trust their senses or logic! It's not funny. You're attacking someone's only coping mechanism to ground themselves right after triggering them.
The whole "they're in my walls" meme, for instance. Or the "the curse is now lifted/back" one. Or the one that insinuates someone is trapped in a coma and people are trying to send messages via these memes to wake them up or whatever.
Or that #Fediverse joke that inserts someone's name or instance into a post (i. e. "anyone else see John Doe around everywhere lately??", where John Doe is automatically changed to the reader's name by exploiting the protocol), is just as bad.
All of these can and will actually hospitalise people, or worse!!
Psychosis is not a super rare condition. I myself experienced an isolated psychotic episode a couple of years ago after a #THC overdose.

There are no words to describe how absurdly terrifying it can be to exist as a consciousness that can't trust its inputs anymore, whose compulsive trains of thought are working against itself.

Why?
This article makes the common mistake of implying "paranoid schizophrenia" is intrinsically dangerous and basically a synonym for "axe murderer".
Most people with psychotic symptoms are not dangerous, including those who are frankly paranoid.
The strong implication is the trust didn't try hard enough to stuff pills down his throat. They didn't do forced medication hard enough. They were negligent for allowing a "paranoid schizophrenic" on the streets.
There is no doubt that Valdo Calocane was a violent man, but so are many other men. Did it really have anything to do with his mental health issues, or was it rooted in ideas of masculinity?
The guy had been sectioned 4 times and forced to take medication he was opposed to. Did medical trauma worsen his mental health issues? Did it make him more paranoid?
Was he ever offered non-drug treatment? Was he ever offered treatment for anger or emotional regulation, or did they just assume those things were part of his schizophrenia?
If they stabilized him, did they then offer treatments, peer support, or support to taper meds, or did they just leave him like that -- even though many international studies have shown long term antipsychotic use worsens long term outcomes?
I don't think my questions are going to be asked at this inquiry. I expect the recommendations will include more coercive treatment.
