I feel very fortunate and humbled to be able to join Hearing Voices Network meetings. Despite being crazy from a young age, I had never met other people with psychotic experiences, not counting the family members who unintentionally traumatized me when I was little.

The first meeting I attended was frightening. I expected to be retraumatized by a Zoom call with half a dozen instances of my mother.

Instead I was catching myself think things like "You all sound so normal!" I know that is a really patronizing thing to think, like congratulating an autistic person on being "high functioning", but it shows where my own self image was, and how distorted my thinking was about myself.

At my lowest point I spent two years enveloped by psychosis. One of the most painful things was how I could not explain what I was going through. One image I tried to share was that I felt I was still a sane person, but I had a radio in my head tuned in to an absolute crackpot who was really really persuasive. But the image just seemed to make people pity me more. In their eyes, the image showed how little I understood myself. She still thinks she's sane, poor thing.

At HVN meetings, I got to meet people who understood my image. I could see the same thing reflected in their struggles and experiences. I could finally have the conversations I could never have had with my mother.

This Danish study is quite ground-breaking. It uses Danish public health data to count the intersex population in Denmark, and then looks at the related incidence of mental health issues and neurodiversity.

1. Incidence of intersex conditions is at 2.5%, using broad inclusion criteria. For example, mild conditions like unilateral cryptorchidism are included. Hyperandrogenic conditions like PCOS are not included in the study.

2. There is a significant increase in neurodivergence in the intersex population, even in the "mild" conditions that are often excluded from intersex studies.

3. Mental health conditions like psychosis correlate to intersex conditions.

Regarding (1), the number of intersex people increase every decade. The correlation of significant neurological effects to even "mild" conditions that fail medical gatekeeping shows that the medical gatekeeping is unjustified, and driven by cosmetic and binary concerns.

Re (2), the correlation of intersex and autism is interesting for perisex trans people. While transphobes claim that vulnerable autistic people are pressured into being trans, they can hardly make the same argument that some autistic kids had peer pressure to be born with physical differences.

Re (3), no idea why mental health issues correlate to intersex, but of course being intersex can result in social isolation, gaslighting, and body image issues. Also some mental health issues like psychosis should probably be reframed as neurodiversity and as iatrogenic trauma.
