When You Know Too Much but Can’t Say a Word
Alright, let’s talk about a specific kind of torture today.
I saw this meme earlier, and I swear to you, my soul left my body for a solid three seconds. You know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s that moment when you’re scrolling through your feed, minding your own business, and bam—you see a status update, a tweet, or a story from that one person.
You know who I mean. The one you’re “lowkey” talking to. The one where there’s no label, or maybe there’s a label but it’s “complicated,” or maybe—let’s be real—you’re not supposed to be talking to them at all.
The meme says: “Statuses hit diff when yall lowkey talk & can’t comment cuz its gon blow ya cover.”
And listen, I have never felt more seen and more attacked at the same time.
Here is the scenario: You are currently texting this person. You might even be on the phone with them right now. You have inside jokes. You know what they ate for breakfast. You know exactly why they are annoyed today because you’ve been listening to them vent about it for the last hour.
Then, they post a status.
And it is the most reply-able thing you have ever seen in your life. Maybe they’re complaining about something you just gave them advice on. Maybe they’re posting a thirst trap that is clearly directed at you (or at least, your ego hopes it is). Or, worst of all, maybe they are posting something blatantly incorrect, and your inner know-it-all is screaming to jump in the comments and set the record straight.
But you can’t. You have to sit on your hands. You have to scroll past like you didn’t even see it. You have to be a ghost in the machine.
Why? Because of “The Cover.”
The Cover is fragile. The Cover is the only thing keeping your business out of the streets. If you comment, suddenly you’ve got their auntie, their ex, and that one messy friend from high school looking at your profile like, “Who is this? And why are they using the laughing emoji? I thought we hated him?”
It’s a strategic game of silence. You want to drop a “LMAO” so bad it hurts. You typed it out, didn’t you? I know you did. You typed it out, stared at it, realized you are supposedly “not speaking” or “just friends” or “don’t even know them like that,” and then you backspaced it into oblivion.
It hits different because you have the context. Everyone else in the comments is like “Hope you’re okay!” or “So true!” completely missing the point. Meanwhile, you’re sitting there with the full tea, the receipts, and the backstory, but you have to act like a stranger. You possess all the power and absolutely none of the platform to use it.
And let’s talk about the paranoia. You accidentally double-tap? Panic attack. Immediate un-like. Throw the whole phone across the room. Did they see the notification? Did she see the notification? You’re sweating over a heart icon because you know that in the court of public opinion, a “like” is basically an admission of guilt.
It’s the modern-day masquerade ball, except instead of fancy masks, we’re just hiding behind “viewed just now” with no interaction.
So, to everyone currently suffering in the “lowkey” zone: I salute you. Stay strong. Keep your thumb steady. Do not comment. Do not react. Send the screenshot to your best friend if you have to scream, but for the love of everything holy, do not blow your cover.
We move in silence. (But seriously, tell them to stop posting stuff that is so hard not to roast them for. It’s unfair.)

May is book's month in Uruguay, May 26th being National Book's Day. I promised to release my books freely in a #FediverseEdition proposal.
I expected to do that in their original language (Spanish).
Translation is a full time professional job which I am not prepared to do. However, some LLM helped me improve a bit my amateur translation attempt of my opera prima The Hungarian Soprano.The main story is a nonlinear chronology which mirrors the dissonant harmonies of La Traviata.
Its structure forces the reader to become the investigator, piecing together a conspiracy the text refuses to spell out.It is a historical fiction work covering espionage, arms traffic, government cover-ups spanning South America and Europe during the Yugoslavian wars.
The prose’s clinical tone (dates, decrees, serial numbers) sharpens the horror, making The hungarian soprano's death feel not like fiction, but like history’s darkest aria.

Seven months ago I had an idea, which led to me creating a thing!
I was using a #blogging tool but there was no #commenting feature on it. I decided to write something myself, as a side-loaded app, to add to my blog. It quickly became a bigger thing and I decided to offer it to anyone.
Komments.cloud was born.
It's a really simple idea. You create a Komments page related to your own page and add this link on your web page. Viewers to your page can then click on the link and add #comments. There's no login required. No hoops to jump through. No annoying Capatcha. Any comments are then quickly moderated by you before publishing.

By far the most common reason people give for not #commenting their code is that their comments get out of date (which is their responsibility to maintain, I hope they realize).
I just came across a README that was out of date with the code. Should we get rid of all READMEs too? Auth0 API documentation is often out of date with their implementation. Should we get rid of all #documentation too?
Or should we, as software developers, stop being so lazy?

I'm a feminist SF writer. Most everything I write, even on Mastodon, is subversive on some level. I want people to think and look below the surface. You'll find plenty of misdirection, double entendres, snark, innuendo and humor in my work. I began as a fan of Andre Norton, so I am well aware that an author's name and gender add subtext to anything we write, so I don't reveal mine without plenty of thought or trust. If she appears as in my book—green tint to her skin, a pair of rebar "ornaments" sticking through her red hair, and a miracle worker's halo—I'd know I was dreaming, roll over, and go back to sleep.
If she appears having come back in time, dressed and made up to camouflage herself in 2023 (WW 6.23 In-Jump In-time: https://eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/110594722887223123), I'd not recognize her. I'd do what I always do to unannounced people I don't know: Tell them I'm not interested and ask them to leave.
Probably for the best.
I wouldn't be able to get her to a Jessica Rabbit moment where, "I'm just drawn that way?" would explain it. I authored her, gave her a ruined world she keeps on being forced to save, forever forced to put off her own dreams. I made bad things happen to her, starting with the her parent's death, the split with her childhood soulmate, and on and on from there. If she went to the trouble to come back in time to confront me, she'd be pissed.
Better she not find me.
