We are exploring @statichost, an elegant solution for hosting static websites in the EU.

First of all, registering an account on statichost is exceptionally fast and simple. Given that the web has turned into a giant mall, full of trackers, heavy websites, annoying pop-ups and banners, etc., having to simply enter an email address on a lightweight website to create an account feels really good.

Then, to add a website, you specify the Git repository comprising its source code, and how to build the pages. statichost relies on containers for the build jobs. Template configurations are available for building websites made with well-known static CMS (e.g., Zola, Hugo, Jekyll), but any OCI/Docker image can be used. You can even publish directly the content of a Git branch, which is the option we opted for. This way, we can keep our current CI/CD pipeline without major changes. We only added a final step to our pipeline to trigger the publication process on statichost via a webhook.

I just released Matt’s Web Way’s code

Last year I made a thing to use Markdown files as a sort of (mostly) static website. It is blazingly fast and super light. I called it Matt’s Web Way. I use it to host documents in whatever structure seems good at the time.

The generated web page is super light with minimal CSS to make it nice to read.

One thing I noticed about the Gemini-Protocol community is that —

Some of the people who are attracted to Gemini are attracted to it, because — they want a Web that was based on Markdown instead of HTML.

And, the Gemini-Protocol + gemtext seemed close to being a Markdown-based Web.
