I got an Urbanglass Studio residency for making new colors of neon!
I pulled a few of the browns we pulled the other day that were too thick at the ends down and after testing the white and pink phosphor jars spinning on the ball mill, determined the white was looking good enough to coat a few.We used so much color, and It is sandwiched between two layers of clear, and the dark amber glass is so much "softer" (moving more and at seemingly lower temperatures and longer) than the clear. An interesting thing happened when I sealed a handle onto the color and not the clear when going to pull down the thick end. The color actually pulled away from the clear.
Including my recipe notes. Talking to some museum conservation folks about this, they mentioned how nice it is to have notes from the artist. This recipe was given to me by a European bender and its very effective.

I'm trying to console myself from the disappointment of this coat by looking at fabric for a different coat pattern, but the fabric suggestions are lightweight Melton, mohair, and flannel which is...not getting me anywhere, since I live in California and warm fabrics are not my specialty! I can't tell if I can use wool broadcloth, I'm fairly sure I can use boiled wool, and I can't tell if medium weight wool coating would be acceptable.
I've been googling the GSM for all three and as far as I can tell I should be aiming for 350 or so (maybe 300 to 350?) but that brings me to my next complaint, which is that online fabric stores often don't list it.
I don't think I'm going to be buying fabric tonight 😂

"Soft touch" rubberized coatings.
Cheap to make, incredibly annoying and frustrating to remove when they inevitably turn into sticky goo a few years later.
I hate that shit and try to avoid buying anything with it, but sometimes I don't even notice it's there until it inevitably fails.

Some shots of the Nitro coated doodle on an off.
The first one at the shop on the aging table is still coming up to full brightness. You can see towards the top it gets dim. That is just the argon. Really shows the effect on brightness that the mercury brings to those phosphors. It takes a few minutes to fully age in an vaporize.
Yeah, my coatings could use some practice. I am, "Not Quite Voltarc" - the largest tube coating brand. I am certainly learning. I could use even more color on many of these.
I was really surprised at the brown the Calcedony gave me. The silver laden, poorly mixed glass looks blue when encased in clear, but its such an amazing brown as a filter glass! It beats the transparent dark "Gold Brown" that I thought would be so amazing.
Okay... I want more stretched bubbles in crazy stripey colors.... and more phosphor colors!

I coated a second sample tube with phosphor a few days ago (the little glyph tube. And another one later on (the speech bubble). I am learning the tube coating ways.
I learned- they drying of the nitro lacquer is super sensitive and important. Its delicate when freshly applied- and I built a T sealed "dryer"out of an old circle I had lying around- air goes in at the bottom and flows out through all the tubes, gently drying them and pushing the liquid up- countering gravity as they dry- important before baking out.
These coatings look good on camera but are far from perfect. Further improvements include further dialing in the mix ratios, as well as CLEANING- I should probably degrease, or rinse the insides of any tubes to be coated with acetone or at least distilled water before coating- to ensure maximum cellulose and binder adhesion.

I was always told at Voltarc (the biggest tube coater here in the US) there is fire shooting out the ends of the tube as they go into the bakeout oven.
I was so excited after coating the second tube that I went to bake out the binder a little too prematurely. The fire squirting out the end was quite funny... but I think the boiling/ burning residual solvents disrupted the coating.
Tomorrow I will wait longer before burning out the coating. Eventually I will use an oven to burn out the tubes.
My setup is Not Quite Voltarc :)

I added 60 more grams to the ChiChis jar as it was looking thin. I may have exceeded the proper rating, but I can always add more solvent in. It sure does look bright at the end there!
Its neat seeing the clump roll in. I sure am glad I built that ball mill! Its amazing seeing how well the nitro lacquer is working as a phosphor medium. It coats the glass SO well!
I borrowed a fitting from a shop Vac that I am gonna use to print an adapter to make a crude tube sucker for coating. Gonna make a port for sucking up phosphors and another for blowing off the remaining solvents with clean dry air from the blower.
Friday is test day.... or Tomorrow if I cannot handle myself.
