  1. @majnouna Best wishes with this project! I remember you wrote earlier about the Umda manuscripts, Omar the Forger, and testing his recipe for an inexpensive indigo pigment which could substitute for lapis:

  2. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🦋✨ #Butterfly wing #color comes from #pterin crystals that bend and scatter #light rather than absorb it, keeping colors vivid without fading.

Chemists developed a faster method to grow these #crystals without toxic solvents, producing small amounts of eco-friendly, non-toxic #pigment. The work points toward glitter made from #DNA-related compounds as a planet-friendlier alternative.

  3. This is so beautifully done:

    > One #color a day, told as it ought to be told: with its provenance, its #chemistry, and the people who paid for it in #poison.

    > Every #pigment in this #catalogue has a paper trail. Where it was first ground, in whose workshop, on whose #canvas it dried, when it was banned, what replaced it. We do not invent provenance and we do not edit out the unflattering parts.

  4. An indigo-based pigment... from an overlooked recipe in a 13th century Arabic text. Fascinating experiments & scholarship from Joumana - & highlighting the digitised manuscript treasures in our libraries!

  5. The March installment of Polylith arrives as the last drifts of snow melt. We consider a new sculpture, and a process that loops without ever repeating.

  10. Portrait of little Dorian, a viewer request from one of my streams. The owner is curious about the #pigment PBk19 and so it's what I used to paint him. With additional goodie of PO49 for the bell.

Dorian is cute and adorable, it was lots of fun to paint him.

  11. New Color Study video went live today, it's about pigment PV23 Dioxazine Violet, which is found in almost every basic set, in school, student grade and professional paints alike. It's a lovely purple, but what's more to it, the properties, how it mixes and how dangerous or not it is for our environment, you can see here:

  12. Since it's hardly found as #pigment in nature, the colour #blue is believed to be a rather modern addition to our painting kits.

Until now: Turns out that apparently already #Paleolithic artists used blue pigment.

  15. Thortveitite is the main ore of scandium.

Titanite is prized for its beauty, comes in different colours & is a source of titanium and hence titanium dioxide, used as a white pigment since ~1910. So, it gets my art vote.

Gets physics vote for trichroism- transparent specimens can show 3 colours depending on viewing angle. #MinCup25 #scicomm #artHist #pigment

  16. Both wavellite and dioptase are sometimes made into jewelry but (though a rare pigment) dioptase has been on artwork used since Neolithic times so it wins my art vote!

See for instance Neolithic sculpture from Jordan, some ancients Asian murals & Russian religious icons.
