Justinian’s Iron Rule
The Nika revolt of 532 nearly toppled Justinian in Constantinople. After days of fire and rebellion, imperial troops trapped crowds in the Hippodrome and killed thousands; Procopius gave a toll of about 30,000. The same reign pursued religious unity by coercion: pagans faced legal restrictions, Athens’ Neoplatonic school was closed, and Miaphysite bishops and monks faced periods of persecution. Justinian’s achievement rested beside formidable repression. #Byzantium

I've finished: Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gabriel Kay
This is my first encounter with Guy Gabriel Kay. I can understand why he is so beloved by his fans.
I really enjoyed his writing and his complex and competent characters. He writes so well, he managed to make me enjoy Byzantine court intrigue, not an easy task.
I really loved the historical perspective, and the central part the art of mosaic laying holds within the novel.
I studied history and art history and really connected with these themes as well as the characters.
If you are looking for a fantasy novel, you may be disappointed, as the magical elements only play a small part. though they do eventually represent an important aspect of the overall theme.
This is mainly alt history.

The name Venice comes from the Roman district of Venetia, and that name, in turn, from the first known inhabitants of the area, the tribe of the Veneti or Venetici.
The Veneti people were as indigenous as was possible in Europe.

Just found out about this recent book by Sean Mathews. It is a "travel-writing" book where the author explores the on-the-ground culture of the remaining Greek communities in Cairo, Istanbul, and Jerusalem.
From Amazon's description:
Travelling through the region, Sean Mathews explores at ground level the tectonic shifts reshaping Europe and the Middle East. He meets the last Greek merchants in Cairo, and hears from Istanbul's remaining Greeks about Turkey's break with the West. In Jerusalem, he discovers a budding alliance between Greece and Israel; and in a faded Ottoman port, he encounters football hooligans loyal to a Russian oligarch.
From the reviews, the author seems to recognize the cultural similarities between Modern Greece & its Eastern neighbors.
Asian Review of Books wrote:Sean Mathews would put it back there: “Living and traveling across Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Türkiye, I realized that Greece is much closer to its Eastern neighbors.” He goes on:

I have not read this book but it seems to be a pretty interesting piece of traveling literature that explores the history, policies, and culture in the region. Pretty interesting, maybe I'll get one!

The “Historia Langobardorum” by Paul the Deacon
The Historia Langobardorum — The History of the Lombards — by Paul the Deacon is the oldest chronicle relevant to the history of Venice. It probably dates to the 780s or 790s.
As the name implies, it is a chronicle of the Lombards — or Langobards — but as the Lombard invasion was a pivotal event in the history of early Venice, there are several chapters relevant to Venice.
The Historia Langobardorum was also an important source for many of the later Venetian chronicles and writings. It is, and it always was, an essential source for the study of early Venice.

Having a super interesting talk this morning on seals of Byzantine physicians!
It's one of the interesting features of Byzantine historical evidence that whereas many historical cultures put seals on documents/letters with wax which rarely survives in the long term, Byzantines often used lead, and lead does survive, so it's a major trove of evidence for the Empire finding the personal lead seals that thousands of Byzantine officials left on documents.

Perun
In Slavic mythology, Perun is the highest god of the pantheon & the god of the sky, thunder, lightning, storms, rain, law, war, fertility, & oak trees. His other attributes were fire, mountains, wind, iris (the flower), eagle, firmament, horses & carts, & weapons (hammer, axe (Axe of Perun), & arrow).
The supreme god in the Kievan Rus’ during the 9th-10th centuries, Perun was first associated with weapons made of stone & later with those of metal. The Kievan Ris’ (a.k.a. Kyivan Rus’) was the 1st East Slavic state & later an amalgam of principalities in Eastern Europe from the late 9th to the mid-13th century. It encompasses a variety of peoples, including East Slavic, Norse, & Finnic.
The Primary Chronicle relates that in the year 6415 (907 AD) Prince Oleg (Old Norse: Helgi) made a peace treaty with the Byzantine Empire & by taking his men to the shrines & swearing by their weapons & by their God Perun, & by Volos, the God of cattle, they confirmed the treaty.
In 980, when Prince Vladimir the Great came to the throne of Kiev, he erected statues of 5 pagan gods in front of his palace which he soon thereafter discarded after his Christianization in 988.
Perun was chief among them, represented with a silver head & a gold moustache. Vladimir’s uncle, Dobrynya, also had a shrine of Perun established in his city of Novgorod. After the Christianization of Kievan Rus’ this place became a monastery, which continued to bear the name of Perun.
Perun was worshipped by the Varangian (Scandinavian) warriors hired by Oleg & Igor during the campaigns against Byzantium. In the treaty of 971, the Varangians reenforce with the Slavic deity, Veles.
When the arrival of Christianity, the old gods fared poorly amongst the Slavs. Grand prince Vladimir the Great, who had once been a very vocal & lavish patron of Perun, converted to Christianity.
In 988, the prince & his family & people of the Kievan Rus’ were collectively baptized. He ordered that the statues of Perun which he himself had erected formerly, be dethroned, torn down with great dishonor & dragged through the streets as they were beaten with sticks. Venice might not have been
Venice was an independent state for almost a millennium, but it might note have been. It all hinged on a single battle fought in the Venetian lagoon in 810.
In the 700s, it had been a province of the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna for a long time. However, long wars between the Exarchate and the Lombards had reduced the province to just a sliver of lagoon, called Venetia Marittima, between Grado in the north and Ravenna in the south.
In 751, the Lombards got the better of the Exarchate, when they took Ravenna and captured and probably killed the last Exarch. Then the Franks under Charlemagne appeared in northern Italy, and defeated the Lombards.
