  3. Captain of the Sands - Jorge Amado. Novel by the great Brazilian writer about a gang of Bahian street kids. A story of friendship, honor and struggle under the backdrop of Salvador da Bahia—the mystical city macumbas and Candomble. Kind of like a Brazilian Outsiders. Anyone who ran with a pack of hooligans in thier youth will find a lot to love here. A very human tales from a very humanist writer. #books #bookstadon

  4. I didn't mean to spend the morning reading instead of crunching my numbers, but argh I made the mistake of picking up Bitter Medicine again.

Now the numbers. For real... I got all six done, and only one is off. Let's hope I can fix it.

  7. Book Review: Oddbody by Rose Keating

Rose Keating’s debut short story collection, Oddbody features macabre body horror tales with funny, dark and unexpected twists and turns.

    Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

    Genre: Simon & Schuster

Publisher: Short Stories, Horror, Literary Fiction, Speculative Fiction

    Review in one word: Macabre

The title Oddbody is a strong signal about what lies between the covers as this collection of short stories: macabre body horror with funny and unexpected twists and turns. In the title story, a woman navigates a codependent relationship with a ghost. In “Squirm,” a daughter must tend to her father who is a man-sized squishy worm devouring himself from the inside out. If this sounds super weird…well it really is…but in a fascinating kind of way I can guarantee you!

“Pineapple” introduces a woman who makes the startling choice to have feather wings surgically attached to her back. In “Eggshells,” a waitress gives birth to an egg during her breakfast shift. These narratives are weird, fun, playful forms of body horror that anyone who loves weird fiction will savour and really love. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book quite like this, and it’s a unique and fresh take on the weird that draws me in here.

The overarching theme of Oddbody is the body itself—as a corporeal site of horror, desire, transformation, and liberation. Keating puts a powerful lens on the body anxieties that women and men have and she’s brutally honest and creepy in a way about it all. The stories are vividly rendered and enjoyable. I found this collection to be masterfully crafted, funny and so much fun to read! I would highly recommend you read it.

Rose Keating is a writer from Waterford, Ireland. She is a recipient of the Curtis Brown Prize and the Marian Keyes Young Writer Award. This collection Oddbody is a bold and surreal descent into a strange netherworld with characters who are grotesque, strange and the tender all at once. I highly recommend this collection if you want to disappear into strange corporeal places you never imagined existed!

  8. A little patch of land.
    Bread on the table.
A dear friend you can talk to.
A small house you can call Home.
    Rabbits…

Such a modest dream. And yet so impossibly out of reach.

Which character from this story stayed with you the most?

  9. Chapter 2: On American Feminism

In the thirties, after the Depression, women sobered. Flapperism was obviously not the answer: they felt more hung up and neurotic than ever before.
    Even Flappers crashed out :xenia_cry:

  13. Does anyone know a good #book #blog with a functioning #RSS feed? I want to follow #bookreviews and other #book posts. I'm primarily interested in following #blogs within the #chicklit and #romantasy genres. I also really enjoy #romcoms and some #cozy reads, so if anyone has any recommendations for #bookblogs that fall into these categories, send them my way! :)

  14. @wdlindsy

I have feared for some time that it will take severe consequences to jolt enough Americans out of their fancies.

The book linked has the Germans, about 10 years after the marching and rallying described above, slipping from their Nazi fancy into studied avoidance of considering the hell that had come for them after the marching and rallying.

I wonder what lies in America's future.

  15. One night of magic. That’s all Oliver Maxwell, 51, and Simone St Ives, 46, had together but it changed both their lives forever. Both doubt they’ll find their soul mate again.
Because finding them seems impossible when all you know about the other is their first name.

  16. Great news! The latest Charlie Parker mystery by John Connolly just arrived from Easons.

I've been looking forward to this since... well, since the last page of the previous one.

Have a hectic weekend ahead, so may not get a chance to start it until next week. But who knows? Maybe I'll carve out some time.

  17. I've noticed I've been reading a lot more lately. I think its providing an escape from this dystopian cesspool that is 'Murica at the moment.

Last month I finished a Murakami novel (Killing Commendatore) and now I'm wrapping up the first book in The Dandelion Dynasty (The Grace of Kings). Killing Commendatore was enthralling and I love how Murakami puts these rather boring main characters into Kafka-esque worlds and scenarios. Not to mention the music selection is great. First time I ever listened to opera music and read a novel.

Currently hooked on the Dandelion Dynasty and plan on reading the rest of the series. I discovered Ken Liu as he translated Cixin Liu's The Three Body Problem series (also highly recommend) and I finally started reading his works. Great start so far.

If you have any suggestions on what I should add to the queue, send them over!

  18. I finished John Connolly's 'The Instruments of Darkness' last night. Or rather, "this morning".

I got to the point where there wasn't enough left to leave it another day, but a bit too much to finish by a sensible hour.

So I ended up completing it just after 4am. Kind of fecked up Friday a bit. But it was worth it. A fantastic book and a worthy addition of one of the best mystery book series of all time.

    Recommended.

  19. When my Dad died a couple of years ago he was halfway through John Connolly's "The Furies". Connolly was one of his favourite writers, which is odd as Dad was usually more of a chunky historical fiction reader. Conn Iggulden, Bernard Cornwell, that kind of thing.

    1/6
