Pretty not bad, but you won't really learn anything at all.

  3. Captain of the Sands - Jorge Amado. Novel by the great Brazilian writer about a gang of Bahian street kids. A story of friendship, honor and struggle under the backdrop of Salvador da Bahia—the mystical city macumbas and Candomble. Kind of like a Brazilian Outsiders. Anyone who ran with a pack of hooligans in thier youth will find a lot to love here. A very human tales from a very humanist writer. #books #bookstadon

  4. I didn't mean to spend the morning reading instead of crunching my numbers, but argh I made the mistake of picking up Bitter Medicine again.

Now the numbers. For real... I got all six done, and only one is off. Let's hope I can fix it.

  5. I must admit, they released a lot more information a lot earlier than I expected. I sort of thought it remained heavily classified well into the '50s.
But it does mean, for my outline, the town rumors that one of the main character worked on the Project is perfectly reasonable.

  7. It is almost September, I need to finish my latest book so I can add it to my pile on the MS readathon. Been an excellent month of reading. We've raised almost a grand via our team, as well!

  8. I'm going to #lacon #Worldcon tomorrow.

Gotta rave about the best #book I picked up at #baycon:

    Bitter Medicine by Mia Tsai

There's a magic Chinese calligraphy artist and a French half-elf. And a spicy romance, but also a bunch of spy thriller stuff. It's a really nice mix and it works. The world is fun, the magic is cool, the people are real.

  9. I’m at that 2/3 point of a very good book where I really want it to resolve, but I also don’t ever want it to end.

  10. "That's not a repair technique," Lyra said, not looking up from the coil she was rewiring. "That's a tantrum."
    "It's a percussive diagnostic."
    "Uh huh."

Ten years of partnership, distilled. From ZERO ATMOSPHERE, Ch. 1.

  11. Hi Mastodon — new here, mostly to talk about a sci-fi romance novel I'm drafting: ZERO ATMOSPHERE. Sixty domed cities are all that's left of Earth. Two salvagers have spent ten years lying to (and for) each other. Chapters 1–6 are done, more coming. Mostly here for snippets, worldbuilding, and process talk. Nice to meet you.

  12. Greg Egan - The Clockwork Rocket. Orthogonal book 1

Greg Egan writes Science Fiction so hard, it could as well be called ‘Fictional Science’. Often SF starts from a question ‘what if?’

Egan's ‘what if’ is ‘what if the speed of light in a vacuum is not constant, but varies with its color?’. This leads to all sorts of speculative consequences that need to be explained. To be able to do that, he creates a main character that travels the distance from being born on a farm to being the world’s Einstein and mission leader for a generational ship trying to save the world. Where their universe is in a way more 4-dimensional than ours, but the characters in this novel are rather 2-dimensional.

The explanation stays at the conceptual level, a general understanding of ‘our physics’ is enough to grasp Egan’s explanations of ‘their physics’, including the graphs and schemas he uses.

But still this will not be everybody's cup of tea. Too much explanation, too little plot. But I really liked it. On to the 2nd book in the trilogy!

    Chapter 21 published today

“...often, when a lesson needs to be learnt, a suitable teacher will present itself. It may not be a person. It could be an experience, an observation… something found in the natural world around you… Recognising the right teachers, at the right time, is the beginning of wisdom.”
