New in IA71: Inset Lead Weights: Trade and Identity in 9th- and 10th-century #Viking armies in Britain & Ireland

Viking armies introduced a bullion economy to 9th-century Britain and Ireland in which transactions were facilitated through the use of balances and weights. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of one type of those weights, made of lead and inset with reused material (an innovation of the 860s & 870s). It examines the range of insets and the messages they conveyed, arguing that they were deliberately selected and processed as a means of cultural communication: to express authority, to reflect the experiences and travels of those armies, and to imbue trading with messages of protection and group identity. It addresses the date range of the weights, whether they reflect specific weight standards, the processes for manufacturing them, and their post-depositional histories. The paper is based on a new catalogue of over 390 such weights, including many from private collections, never previously published, now available as an illustrated searchable online catalogue via ADS. This comprises a critical underexplored dataset for the Viking impact on Britain and Ireland, which can be tightly dated to the late 9th century, presenting new insights into the earliest years of migration and settlement.

Maybe this is the way.
Treat it like one single line of panels by extending the posts up attaching to a cross bar that would go the full length of the fence (or however long the line of panels is) and provide the base for each panel.

Looking for some #diy #solar advice. Specifically, I am looking for a bracket solution whereby I could mount solar panels on the top of each fence post around the yard. (either full size 6x3ft rectangular panels or 5x5 “half size”?
My backyard is in a state of flux, and the fence is new last fall so this is the time to do it.
The brackets would need to attach on the inward facing side of the post, or as a “cap” over the top of the post and then have a bracket that holds the panel up and far enough away to clear the fence at an angle.
The long side of our yard faces north/south so it is perfect for panels throughout the year.
We get strong southerly winds so they would need to be solid.
Suggestions appreciated. It would be great if there was something purpose built for mounting panels on fences.
It might be something I just need to have made custom (there are lots of welding shops in town) but I am not sure how to make sure that the panel itself would be able to attach to the bracket properly.

I am *so* out of my depth with machining.
Yes, maybe the bed isn't 100% trammed. Maybe the plywood spoil board (which I really do *not* need for facing) is out of wack.
But that last edge. *frustrated noises*
It's smooth as silk but the left hand edge still has little ridges. That means it's lower than the tool, I guess.
