  3. If the subject matter of Islamic Fiqh is of interest to you, I also recommend a reading of my attempt to define Islamic Fiqh in the context of how we define 'law' today:

  4. Alhamdulillah, I have completed my largest and most dear research task that I took on roughly 1+ years ago.

I have compiled a list of the 'ahkam' (ruling/law) verses of the Quran used by the scholars of Fiqh to derive and establish Islamic Fiqh from.

The verses are split according to chapter and subject.

This desire was spurred by a simple question: which verses do the Fiqh scholars consider Ahkam?

    The answer is surprising.

  9. In my article related to Islamic Fiqh/Jurisprudence, I attempted to define what exactly Fiqh is.

It is a misnomer to attribute Fiqh to merely mean law, per the common linguistic definition of law in most legal systems today.

  10. I've recently released a batch of 3 articles, the first of which is my introduction to Tahqiq: the science of manuscript verification/authentication.

This should be of interest to Islamic students and academics alike:

    Feedback always welcome.

  11. A common misnomer people have is that Maktaba Shamela consists of the entire Islamic text corpus which has been digitized.

    This is false.

There's a massive number of Islamic texts that are scanned PDFs only.

There's an even greater number of Islamic texts that remain in book form only.

And there's a large, dispersed corpus of manuscripts that are not published.

  14. How to embrace a normative system seemingly incompatible with nomadic life, given that it presupposes a state governed by an Islamic ruler (imām) and considers the city the natural environment of legal institutions?

Ismail Warscheid (CNRS-IRHT, irht.cnrs.fr/fr/annuaire/warsc) reads the _Book of the Desert (Kitāb al-Bādiya)_, a nineteenth-century legal treatise composed by Muḥammad al-Māmī (d. 1282/1865), a Muslim scholar from the Tiris desert in present-day Mauritania. And, by looking at Bedouin Islam, he challenges the narratives of center-periphery that have dominated Islamic intellectual history.

  17. In there is a subject called Usul al Fiqh (Principles of Law/Jurisprudence). Combined with , the 2 show us not only the sources of law, but how it was implemented (eg. cases of the ruler being tried under the law).

Contrast that with our modern reality and how laws are:

    - complicated
    - arbitrary
    - selectively enforced

This applies at the human and state level.

If laws have no application after a certain wealth/power level, is there any real justice?

  18. How did the concept of "Umma" – a supranational muslim community – come to be in the 1930s? In her final report, our scholarship holder Nagat Emara (FU Berlin) analyzes the Franco-Algerian intellectual discourse in periodicals:

  20. To folks in the fediverse working in Islamic Studies (broadly conceived), some colleagues of mine, Jonathan Parkes Allen and Taimoor Shahid, are conducting a survey on Digital Humanities and Islamic Studies. They're not just looking for people who consider themselves DH practitioners, but rather "anyone using digital resources and tools" in studying the Islamicate world. If that's you, then please check it out!

  22. I'm wondering if anyone can help me identify some places named in an #Armenian text, the history of Ghevond.

The text describes a raid by the Arab governor of Armenia (based at Duin) toward Pontus, passing Karin/Theodosioupolis/Erzerum and Kolonia (identified) as well as Govat'a, Kastiłon/Kastighon, and the district of Marit‘enēs (unidentified), listed in that order (perhaps a clue as to location?). I've tried playing with Pleiades but I'm not finding likely candidates.
