In conversation with Lea Ypi
In Indignity, author and academic Lea Ypi investigates the truth about her family as she transports the reader to the vanished world of Ottoman aristocracy, the making of modern Greece and Albania, a global financial crisis, the horrors of war and the dawn of communism in the Balkans – asking what we really know about those closest to us.

Did you know that #climate played a part in finishing the 'Long #Turkish War'?
The #Ottoman Empire had battled with the Habsburgs & Co since 1526. In 1593, another 13 years of war ended in the only #Treaty that made the Habsburg #monarch & the Ottoman #sultan equals.
The 'Little Ice Age' had taken hold of #Europe in the late 16th c.; droughts & cold caused failed harvests & livestock deaths.
The Ottomans had had strong birth rates in the unusually warm period prior to the Little Ice Age & were now paying the price.
There was #famine, rinderpest & #rebellions. This resulted in a weakened Ottoman state.
The Empire was simply not prepared to withstand another defensive effort.
They recovered enough by 1669 to conquer #Crete & continue the war(s), all the way to 1791.

"Purist Pursuits chronicles how and why Armenians in the #Ottoman Empire fashioned a new #language called Western #Armenian. Tracing its rise from the eighteenth to the early-twentieth centuries, Jennifer Manoukian studies the evolution of an ever-changing ideology that undergirded all phases of the language's formation: #linguistic #purism. … Her work charts a new course in the study of language in the Ottoman Empire."

“🚨🇮🇷🇹🇷Is the Iran War Accidentally Rebuilding the Ottoman Empire?”
in New Rules Geo on Telegram
@[email protected]
@[email protected]
@[email protected]“The Ottomans didn't dominate the world through conquest alone. They dominated by controlling Eurasian land trade routes and large swathes of the Mediterranean. The Iran war may be positioning Turkey to rebuild that same combination.
For decades, the Strait of #Hormuz carried nearly 20% of global oil and #LNG supply. The Iran war has created an opening for alternative routes — and Turkey sits at the intersection of several plausible ones:”
