@Gustodon - yes! As in almost all of my visual work, I use a combination of different analogue and digital techniques. It often starts with a pencil drawing, which I overlay in Procreate and fill in in Photoshop with textures generated by AI. I am inspired by fantasy in a broad sense and also like to make drawings in which I introduce the cats I know as superheroes in their own fantasy tales. 😉

A bumble bee and ceanothus blossoms.

This particular bumble bee is a queen "Two Form Bumble Bee," although there are other bees with a near identical pattern, and even the queens of this variety have several variations in coloring.

I borrowed a book from my neighbor on identifying bumble bees. She's a detail-oriented person and a lover of gardens and wildlife, but she confessed she was defeated in her attempts to learn to tell one bumble bee from another. After thumbing through the book and reading about the difficulties of identification, I'm defeated, too.

The 'Shamrock' or 'Pumpkin' Orbweaver spider, Araneus trifolium... painted on an oyster shell. Most of the orb-weavers we see in our garden are Cross Orbweavers, which are European imports. The Shamrock Orbweaver is native to North America, and comes in a range of colors.

I thought a long time about how to do the web, as I wanted to keep the white background of the oyster shell. In real life, the web would be hard to see with such a light backdrop. I eventually settled on dewdrops painted with silver, and consoled myself that it was artistic license.

Purple Shore Crab (Hemigrapsus nudus), and a bit of Shakespeare.

These little guys are everywhere on the shores of the Salish Sea, scurrying under rocks or raising their tiny claws at you, offering a fight.

I used five different reference photos (and video stills), to cobble together a leg and claw arrangement I liked. Its facial expression turned out a little more pouty than grumpy, but that's okay; I think it still works.
