Music was my first love, I started to dance before I could even walk, I recorded myself singing songs in “English”, before I learned the language. The first vinyl record I bought with my pocket money as a little girl was Imagine by John Lennon. I never owned a record player, my sound system are a cheap speaker and good headphones, but I still listen to this song sometimes, imagining a world like it is described in the song.

As a teenager I was a grunge girl and spent a lot of time in alternative music spaces. I became a fan of Massive Attack, The Prodigy and Björk, but also Tori Amos, I love piano music. In 1996 I visited a concert of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Opening act was Moby and a lot of people were pissed off, but I had the fun of my life. I was never really a fan of Moby for several reasons, but this experience intensified my love for electronic music. During the following decades I explored different genres.

During my time in Cologne in my 20s I worked in a café wit a lot of jazz music and some musicians from the nearby music university performed live sessions there, some in combination with electronic modifications. I loved how I got lost in all these sounds, how I could enter another world.

My music taste was also very much influenced by the minimal techno club culture during that time. My first night in the Berghain in Berlin was one of the greatest experiences I ever had, it influenced my decision to move to our capital at the end of my 20s.

During my 30s I lost myself in depression, burnout and an unhealthy relationship to a great extent, but I still tried to stay connected with my special interest on a basic level, mostly electronic chill out music, a bit of jazz and songs from my past. I also became a yoga teacher and became more aware of my body and the intuitive way I dance, especially during a yoga workshop with an ex-ballerina. The last concert I visited was Depeche Mode some years ago.

About a year ago a friend introduced me to D&B, mainly the first Neurofunk tracks by Ed Rush, Optical and I realized that I found my music. I started to understand what an influence it has on my nervous system, my flow of thoughts and feelings, that it not only brings me joy, but that it has an immense therapeutical, a regulating effect on me, especially the dancing.

Since then I started to explore the sub genres of D&B, that resonated most with me, I explored how the music changed over the decades, went further into process of finding my own music taste, I connected with people, who helped me with this, who shared the music they like or produce themselves with me. I am still grateful for that and I would like to continue that process, there’s still so much to explore.

I got a better understanding of what I feels right for me and why by now and how I can find the tracks I want to put into my playlists, that I create for different purposes and moods. I can use my skills as a concept developer and special interest in psychology when it comes to that, another aspect of it, that brings me joy, that creates flow states in me.

Yesterday I created a playlist, that somewhat reflects this journey, it’s called Traveler In Time, like one of the tracks on it. It strongly resonates with me for many reasons, because it not only represents to the process of finding my music taste, but also the identity work, that makes me travel through the different phases of my life, the different parts of my inner world, too. I also have a special interest in history, always wanted to be a princess and a knight (fluidity in gender and personality) and I am a very progressive person, but also old school in some aspects (the phrase old school is probably old school itself by now).

I am very interested in the journey of other people and their special interest in music. What was your first record? What influenced your music taste?
