Well here's something that doesn't surprise me in the least.

People with similar levels of autistic traits show greater social attraction to one another, and their brains synchronize in unique ways during active conversation. A recent experiment published in Biological Psychiatry suggests that social difficulties related to autism might be a problem of mismatched communication styles rather than an inherent social deficit.

This matches with our own life experience very well. It is much easier for us to be social with other autistics than to do so with neurotypical people.

April was rough, but these two kept me going.

My Apple Music Replay shows 252 hours of listening this month - with Kælan Mikla as my №1 artist and Moby right behind.

Their atmospheric, melancholic sound was exactly what I needed when things felt heavy.

Kælan Mikla (BTW - Icelandic darkwave/post-punk) especially tracks like Sólstöður and Stjörnuljós (sorry, I had to copy the titles since I have no Icelandic layout) felt like cold northern light cutting through the fog.

Haunting, beautiful, strangely comforting. Moby’s Natural Blues and The Sky Is Broken hit different too (like in my previous post).

If you haven’t heard Kælan Mikla yet, start with their latest album "Undir Köldum Norðurljósum".

I can’t recommend them enough.

I’ve noticed a pattern in people talking about neurodiversity. Some people will gladly admit they have ADHD and then go on to describe ASD symptoms. I admit it took me a while to learn the difference.

My unqualified, oversimplified split is this:

ADHD affects your motivation and focus.

ASD affects how you deal with other people and how sensitive your body and mind are to external factors.

Hopefully, in time, ASD will lose the stigma in a similar way that ADHD seems to have.

I just realized how two common autistic traits are related, imo.
#1 is struggling to know who to trust. Not sure if the words ‘gullible’ or ‘naive’ fully encompass it, but they are close. I trust everyone to a fault. I’m a completely open book😅.
#2 is black-and-white thinking.

How they interact is that black and white thinking forces me to stop trusting people who have objectively harmed me. It is a golden rule that MUST follow for my own good.

You can imagine how I felt after the November 2024 US election when 30% of the country, as well as most of my family and loved ones, voted against my human rights. 🙃🫠🫥😶

@mhoye it’s always good to err on the side of stronger rather than weaker crypto where feasible as you’re not only defending comms / data against today’s capabilities but also against future capabilities that can be applied against any captured & stored comms / data by an adversary. it’s already common for nation-state intelligence orgs to position themselves in core comms backbones to collect & store as much as they can that goes across the wire, whether encrypted or not

the usual caveats about threat models still apply, but threat models can change over time & your #ThreatModel in 5-10 years may include people / orgs / countries that you’re not currently worried about – the adage is “the time for good #OpSec^ is before you know you need good OpSec” 🙃

Sometime soon - I'd like to openly discuss where the #safety line is drawn for other students, staff & educational volunteers when kid on kid violence happens & one of the kids is #ASD #SpecialNeeds. I haven't been able to figure this out. How can we keep kids like this in schools because we need to find ways to do that. Kicking them out doesn't help society, in the long run.

I support trying our best to help misunderstood ASD kids & helping them get more supports at younger ages. Many don't get enough supports.
I have tolerated a lot of physical abuses (being spat on, punched, kicked, getting scratched & hair pulled, etc.) because many #descalation methods didn't work on the job. I worked in an elementary school in North Saanich as a specialized teacher's assistant & all the students I worked with were ASD on varying levels.

We had 2 quiet therapy rooms. Those were the only safe sanctuaries for the ASD kids who felt overloaded & needed to be away from everyone else. Often, we had multiple kids having meltdowns & there wasn't any other sanctuary spots for them within the small school. I felt so helpless during those days but pretended everything was A-OK. I took kids out to the yard & to the gardens to try & distract them. Sometimes that worked. Other times, I had to deal with multiple screaming kids, having mass meltdowns at the same time - when we were constantly understaffed. That was a very difficult job. I was severely underpaid for it.

ASD kids needed more support staff in schools & they still do. They all deserve that investment from our government. They are all worth the investment.

As an aside, it seems the UK Labour government is still trying to cut support to those who need it (per morning interview with Pat MacFadden). They're just squirming to find 'palatable' ways to achieve cuts.

All part of achieving an environment that demonises the vulnerable.
