  1. I posted this a couple of years ago, but it's good to remember that there are many therapies that can help autistic people.

Thanks to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) for their public statement supporting different approaches.

  6. When some people learn you're Autistic, they may start treating you as less intelligent or incapable, even though nothing about you has actually changed. Or they might speak slower and use small words, because in some people's minds, that's what you do for someone who's disabled. With absolutely no nuance. 1/2

  11. For those of us who figure out we're Autistic and/or ADHD as adults, it's incredibly common to experience a mix of overwhelm, relief, regret, hope, anger, and excitement. Sometimes all at once.

    That's normal for us.
And figuring yourself out is worth it all.

  16. How do you motivate an Autistic kid? You don't.

You create the conditions in which their natural interest and creativity can emerge. That's when they'll shine.

  23. How each of us sees independence, and dependence, can vary within a family, community, and culture. Most children have a little spark in them that fosters their independence, strength, and resilience. The way we all—teachers, parents, therapists—worked with my son as he grew up required his compliance in learning new things. But we also discovered that where we first believed he had less flexibility were actually the best places for him to build his strength and resilience.
