We usually use lab coats and cut the sleeves off when we make tatter jackets. This time I’m using an undergraduate gown… much more body to it means far more rags, and it isn’t practical to remove the sleeves so they’re getting rags too. I’m maybe half way through and am running low on tatters as I only pre-cut the usual amount (2 metres of 60” cotton)…

Back again from English Dance Week at Pinewoods. I did a lot of English country dancing. I played clarinet for ECD in the campers' night band. (First time playing clarinet in a band since about 2008 and first time playing for ECD ever.) I did a Bidford morris dance for the first time and a new unnamed morris style for the first time but then again it was the first time for literally anyone. I did longsword dancing for the first time since 1992. I sang a lot. I met lots of people. I had a great time.

An excellent day of dance yesterday, so of course I failed to take any photos… just the right weather (hot but not too hot, slight cooling breeze not windy, not wet), sides quite different in styles, appreciative audiences, and very pleasant music session in the pub afterwards.

Realised last night that based on who is coming/broken I’ll be needing to dance not just play at today’s day of dance. Why does this happen so often? We have loads of proper dancers, I want to be primarily a musician so tend not to dance at practice, then when there’s a big dance out I end up dancing though I’m not at all properly prepared… oh well, we usually get away with it!
(Don’t mention the town twinning thing where I forgot the sticking to Deformed Rabbit!)
(Yes, it is because people have lives and can’t all come to every dance out and then the people who can come get damaged (though at least that’s not while dancing, usually, just bad luck at home).)Anyway, I’m hoping that can borrow some rags from someone as of late I’ve been sharing a tatter jacket with a newish member until we get around to making more up, otherwise I’ll stick out like a sore thumb even without making any major errors! 😂

Just a day to go before Red Cuthbert Day of Dance, part of the Bedford Fringe Festival - five morris sides will be starting at the Faces on Silver Street at 1030, with various spots throughout the town until we finish at Riverside Square, 1530-1600. We’ll all be doing turns in the Quarry Theatre Garden between 1200 and 1330, and after the last dance spot there will be a music session in The Hidden Barrel.
If you’re local, do come and see us & our fellow dancers!
Red Cuthbert will be joined by Golden Hare, Letchworth Morris, Queen’s Oak and Wicket Brood.

A good time dancing yesterday, including busking our way through Bluebells for a massed dance - none of us having done it outside an Ale in about eight years - and my finally almost getting Bonny Green (no one actually really knows it, do they?), good crowd reactions, and a nice social afternoon afterwards.

If you’re going to the Bedford River Festival today, keep an eye out for morris dancing along the embankment, from 1130 until we can no longer hold the space against the crowds. All three of the town’s sides will be there - Red Cuthbert Morris, Hemlock Morris and the Bedford Morris Men.

@HollieK72 Traditionally morris dancers in Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, and the Forest of Dean, as well as bedlam morris dancers in Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire, usually wore few or no bells. The big bell pads with lots of bells were a peculiarity of the South Midlands ("Cotswold") morris.
