Build-in-public: the F-Droid recipe for TrimPlayer, our AntennaPod fork, now passes fdroidserver lint and scan_source with 0 problems. The release build used to be hard-wired to a gitignored keystore, so clean checkouts failed. It now builds unsigned without one. Not listed yet: the fdroiddata merge request isn't open, and F-Droid's own CI is the real test. TrimBrain, the ad/intro detector, is a network service, so it will carry NonFreeNet. #FOSS #Android #AntennaPod
Exact, the market leading bookkeeping system that big enterprises use, and is forced on clients by accountants all over my neck of the woods, charges at least €100 monthly for a subscription.
Their user interface is bad. So bad that I would have found it unacceptable 20y ago. It takes seven actions to change a number field and then it silently reverts the change if you don't hit a particular key before you hit the save button. Batch edit only for the fields you don't want to edit. That kind of bad 🤮
Their API isn't much better.
Now I am surrounded by enthusiasm in the financial department about the fact that it seems to be possible to vibe code around this atrocity, so at least we don't have to endure it directly.
But I'm thinking that's not nearly the flex people make it out to be.
What if we would build a properly functioning FOSS bookkeeping software? Wouldn't that make all of our lives much easier?

Lately, I am receiving a lot of offers from data analytics companies and companies that offer SEO to other companies (including fintechs). This is not just for @appmanager, but also other less known apps too. They generally offer partnership or subscription in exchange for using an analytics SDK provided by them in the app or putting fixed ad banner either in the app or it's website.
The offers are enticing and can persuade any developers in accepting those agreements. I urge the #FOSS users and contributors to be cautious about the apps they use and inspect each update to see if any analytics or ad components are added. It is in our interest to avoid situations like what happened to Aurora Store (for a brief period) or Simple Mobile Tool.

I've had "the people holding up the Internet" in a browser tab for a couple weeks and finally finished reading it today. It really does feel like XKCD was right about "some random person in Nebraska". As a contributor I want #FOSS projects to thrive even knowing most of us are hobbyists; it's a little scary to realize how core some projects have become without the maintainers getting help. https://sheets.works/data-viz/holding-up-the-internet/read

If modern society is freeloading on FOSS, why not have a day of the year where the software goes down in a pre-programmed manner for the good of society to practice living in the stone age?
Hey everyone!
It's been a while but we're happy to announce that our next event hosted by @aethernaut will take place on the 7th of November.

I find it funny that Zenless is the longest segment in the gaming benchmarks with the rest essentially being quick fired in comparison! :neobot_laugh:
It's impossible to avoid #AI as a #FOSS developer nowadays. Even if you do not use it yourself, others do and it's in your PRs, your issues, your dependencies, everywhere. It's more important than ever to create safe spaces for yourself, small pet projects that you can tinker with without any pressure, where learning and craftsmanship is more important than features or success, where you can take your time.
Take care. Try to not loose the passion for your craft.
Today the PHP group has announced an additional advisory that only affects a very unlikely scenario depending on your application code.
It only affects applications changing the serialization handler via ini_set() during runtime before calling session_start().
HortusFox does not do this. Neither does the underlying Asatru PHP framework do this.

Found on that orange website that was founded by Paul Graham. I can imagine a large cadre of Graham’s fanboys at that site will not take very well to this article, especially in the comment section.
(Quoting this article, which quotes Graham)In “Why to Not Not Start a Startup”, Paul Graham writes:
“So, paradoxically, if you’re too inexperienced to start a startup, what you should do is start one. That’s a way more efficient cure for inexperience than a normal job. In fact, getting a normal job may actually make you less able to start a startup, by turning you into a tame animal who thinks he needs an office to work in and a product manager to tell him what software to write.”
Let me be blunt: that’s nonsense. It paints a black and white picture of the world that simply doesn’t exist. You don’t have to choose between starting a startup and working a soul-crushing job as a “tame animal” in a cubicle. There’s a whole spectrum of possibilities in between! For instance, you could work for yourself or with a small team, making use of your creativity and coming up with your own ideas.
Paul wants you to start a startup because he wants to fund you and profit from your hard work. His motives are purely egoistical.
If you happen to hit the startup jackpot, Paul gets even richer and you might become wealthy too. If you don’t, you’re left with nothing while Paul, already rich, gets to write an essay about your failure.
That’s a whole lot of risk for very little upside.
