@MakersHour Q1:into+recent
A1: Hello, I'm Ted. Lately most of my making involves blinky lights.
But this past weekend, I did some #moveSlowAndFixThings - I repaired a very old nice switch I bought: https://leds.social/@tschundler/117063558051513867
I also picked up an old ruggedized tablet and got it working again by installing Linux tricking one of its battery packs into charging.
Windows install wouldn't recognize any USB device. Linux unfortunately doesn't recognize the touch screen, but everything else works.

I can't fix everything but I can fix these pants I ripped going over a chain link fence to retrieve a beach ball.
I got to use the new-to-me Necchi Supernova on the free-motion quilting bits, after failing to execute my vision successfully on either the Juki (not made for it, not its fault) or the Bernina (don't have the right foot, don't wait to wait three weeks for it to get ordered). I'm trying to improve my free motion skills ahead of tackling the #cherryChoreCoat project again...

My client is a caregiver to their mother, who has little access to short term memory. My client explains that the tv has just updated and reorganized its Home Screen. She knew how to access her shows on the old Home Screen. Now, every time she powers up the tv, she’s deluged with ads and trending slop and has to relearn how to use the device to find her shows, from scratch, as if starting over again for the first time. This is now a nightly half-hour ordeal. The update was mandatory. They were never given an option to keep the system she knew.
Chopping vegetables has worked the same way for fifty thousand years. Why do these assholes think they have the right to change how a tv works?

Everyone makes mistakes in software development; the important thing is that you go back and fix them: https://kechpaja.com/blog/2026/04/21-fixing-mistakes.html.
Our industry has been unreasonably lax about this for too long, and it is starting to show.

I can’t fix everything, but I can fix the pants my husband ripped falling on ice on his way home from a city council meeting.

@bluesabre @xubuntu Appreciate Xubuntu team's mature approach towards legacy app and platform support: keeping the LTS as stable as possible, but with a clear, transparent sunset plan. Kudos to the team!

Some software platforms are *complex*. Even integrating two systems that use the same technologies, can be fraught with a thousand small barriers.
@fastmail took three decades to finally integrate the #email systems of POBox into #Fastmail email systems, and this week published an interesting examination of what all that involved.

I spent a bit of time today recovering from the weekend and clearing out my mending pile. This bag from Market Basket had some places where the panels were pulling apart from each other and the binding was falling off. I pulled off the crummy binding and replaced it with some nylon webbing, and ta-da, bag is useful again.
From a purely capitalist perspective, this is a terrible use of time, right? I could just buy a new bag from MB for, like, what, $5? $10? And I could have used that time in Economically Productive Pursuits to Increase The GDP, and someone in an exploited country could have made another one and shipped it across the ocean, and in a couple years that binding would rip and I’d buy a new one and we’d just keep doing that dance until the heat death of the universe.
Or I could spend the time and effort to keep it out of a landfill for a little longer. So I did. And it’s a small thing but it’s better than nothing. Bonus: bag is now significantly gayer.
We can fix things if we take the time.

@icing i don't care about sonos at all (i personally think cables are superior by offering best quality at lowest latency), but i hope this will be taken as an example that #MoveSlowAndFixThings is the better idea.
