  3. New York City’s incoming Mayor Zohran Mamdani is already plotting bold moves to make the city more affordable, even before taking office. Collaborating with legal experts like Lina Khan, Mamdani is exploring a dozen potential executive powers and regulations to lower rents, utility bills, and increase business transparency—steps that could bypass sluggish state politics. These early actions will test how much unilateral power a NYC mayor has to push a leftist agenda, possibly shaping the city’s policy landscape and the scope of mayoral authority. Will these moves set a new precedent for bold city governance? More here: nytimes.com/2025/12/26/nyregio #NYC #Mamdani #UrbanPolicy #AffordableHousing #CityLeadership #PoliticalPower #LeftistAgenda

  11. Ken Paxton’s push for consolidation of state authority in Texas raises important questions. GOP lawmakers are advancing a "Death Star" law that limits local governments from enacting progressive policies, affecting diverse areas from urban planning to poverty alleviation programs. Critics like Steven Pedigo warn it undermines local governance and effective solutions to urban issues. 12. Researchers found NO evidence that a mayor’s political party (D or R) affects crime rates, police funding, or arrests in US 🇺🇸 cities.

Turns out, crime isn’t about red or blue - it’s way more complicated. Politicians talk big 🎙️💬, but #data speaks louder!

  14. New research suggests cities are moving away from residential parking policies that privilege local residents at the expense of outsiders, toward one that promotes "better urban functioning." Vancouver is one example. doi.org/10.1016/j.tranpol.2023

  15. These two geographic areas are shown at the exact same scale.

The circle at left (#Wyoming + major parts of several other states) has 582,000 workers. The circle at right (#NewHaven + a few of its suburbs) has 751,000 workers.

The area at left is represented by 14 US Senators, the area at right is represented by just 2.

The US might be more economically competitive if its Senate better reflected the nation's economy.

  16. Burnout

"The most destructive fires were set or commissioned by landlords, who collected enormous sums in the resulting insurance payouts. Black and brown neighborhoods across the city and nation were ravaged by the arson wave, which was fueled by subprime fire insurance policies that saturated neighborhoods of color after 1968."

The author's book on the 1970s wave of landlord arson, "Born in Flames," is forthcoming from Liveright/Norton.

  17. @AbandonedAmerica @yellowstreetlight @CivicDutyPeg take it from someone fighting to rebuild #baltimore neighborhoods for the people and not for the #PE funds, The City is not your friend. Not because they’re not good people, but because American #urbanpolicy has been flawed since forever but especially since the 50’s. It’s a crap system designed to fall flat on its face & by golly one day we’re gonna scrap it for something that works.

  18. Since I didn’t have many followers when I first introduced myself, I thought I should do another.
