  1. A Birthday Party Nearby and Good Sleep Before Cycling

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

On Sunday I want to do a bike ride that I have been thinking of doing for months, at this point. It's an 81km loop that begins in Nyon and ends in Nyon, going via Montricher. The challenge with this ride is that it has 1100m of climbing.

    A Slight Let Down

My looking forward to this bike ride is tainted by the news that some alcoholics will have a party from 13:00 onwards in a house/apartment nearby. By law the alcoholics need to stop making noise by 22:00, but the likelihood they will, once drunk is very low.

    A Backup Sleeping Solution

It would be easy to move from the primary bedroom to the backup bedroom that night, but it's the principle of the thing that bothers me.

    The Uni Student Solution

When I was at uni, and people were noisy my solution was simple. I went to the student bar until closing time every night. If I went to sleep after the noisy people, then they wouldn't keep me awake.

With age that option is less appealing. With age I want to go to sleep by midnight. With age if I miss sleep it takes longer to recover. If we stayed forever young I would just Netflix and chill, or YouTube and chill until they go to sleep, and then I would finally do the same.

    Decent So Far

It's easy to panic, when you see that a party is planned, but these neighbours tend to go indoors quite early and then I regain my private sphere. With luck I will have a normal night of sleep and be fresh for cycling the next day. If I force myself to be optimistic I will be able to have a great night of sleep, especially if I keep my caffeine habit under control.

    The Bike Ride

I plan to Cycle with the Le Cerle No Pressure Club from Nyon towards Montricher, before turning towards the lake, before heading back to Nyon via the vineyards and fields. The ride should be pleasant. I was planning to do this ride solo but I hope forward to doing it with a group with some familiar people.

A Social Ride From Start to Finish

A few days ago I went on a group ride that was around 40km and I did another 48 kilometres in solitude. This time I will be riding 88 kilometres with the group and around 4-6 kilometres in solitude. I like when group rides begin and end near where I live because then I am, in theory, as tired as those I am riding with.

    And Finally

Due to heavy rain seeing the Thursday evening ride cancelled, and due to not riding today or tomorrow I should be especially well rested for Sunday's ride, if I get to sleep properly. I hope that I do.

I look forward to riding with a different group than usual once again.

  9. Suburban sprawl is eating our farmland.

Urbanism and densification is often framed as being about building better cities.

What's often overlooked, but is just as important, is that it's also about protecting our farms and wilderness areas from suburban development.

Building better cities helps protect our sources of fresh food and water, as well as critical habitats for wildlife.
