TITLE: Are the benefits of psychedelics exaggerated? A new study highlights the problem of selection bias

    URL: psypost.org/are-the-benefits-o

A study comparing psychedelic enthusiasts and people from the general population (who also had psychedelic experiences) found that the enthusiasts tended to report much greater positive quality-of-life effects. The enthusiasts also showed higher openness, extraversion, and agreeableness. This indicates that recruitment strategies in psychedelic research that lean towards including enthusiasts may shape the outcomes obtained in those studies. The paper was published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs.

Psychedelic drugs are substances that can strongly alter perception, mood, thinking, and the sense of self. They may change how people experience colors, sounds, time, memories, emotions, and the meaning of events. Classic psychedelics include LSD, psilocybin from “magic mushrooms,” DMT, and mescaline. These substances mainly act on serotonin receptors in the brain.

In research settings, psychedelics are being studied for possible therapeutic use in conditions such as depression, PTSD, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Their effects depend heavily on dose, personality, expectations, mental state, physical setting, and social support. Psychedelics can also carry risks, including panic, confusion, dangerous behavior during intoxication, worsening of some psychiatric conditions, and legal consequences where they are prohibited.

Study author Jonathan Bendz and his colleagues noted that many studies of psychedelic users report extraordinarily positive self-reported effects. However, they suggest that this might represent an exaggeration of the real effects caused by biased selection, or even self-selection, of study participants. The issue is that the effects of psychedelics can only be tested on individuals who agree to use them. These participants tend to be individuals who have already had especially positive experiences with psychedelic use.

To examine this hypothesis, these researchers conducted a study comparing whether the self-reported quality-of-life impact of psychedelic experiences differed between a convenience sample of psychedelic enthusiasts and a group of people from the general population recruited via Prolific. They also wanted to see whether the difference between the two groups remained after controlling for mindset, setting, motivation to use psychedelic drugs, and personality traits.

The enthusiast group consisted of 583 individuals recruited through an anonymous survey posted on the Facebook and Instagram pages of a Swedish nonprofit organization that disseminates information about psychedelic science (Nätverket för Psykedelisk Vetenskap). A snowball sampling approach was used to reach more participants. The general population group consisted of 599 individuals recruited via Prolific (an online survey platform). They were required to have prior psychedelic experience, but were not recruited from a specific psychedelic community.

Study participants completed assessments of the quality-of-life impact of their psychedelic experiences (e.g., “How has your most meaningful psychedelic experience affected the quality of your relationship with… family, friends, yourself, society, and nature?”). They also answered questions regarding their mindset and physical setting during the experience (“To what extent did you experience your mindset/environment to be optimal?”), their motivation (“What was your motivation for using a psychedelic substance?”), and their personality (using the IPIP-NEO-30 assessment).

Results showed that the psychedelic enthusiasts tended to report a much higher quality-of-life impact from their psychedelic experiences compared to the Prolific group. The enthusiast group also reported having a more optimal mindset and setting during their trips, and they were more likely to report taking the drugs for personal growth rather than for fun. Finally, the enthusiasts tended to be more open to new experiences, extraverted, and agreeable than the participants from the Prolific group.

Even after using a statistical model to account for these differences in personality, mindset, setting, and motivation, simply belonging to the enthusiast group remained the strongest predictor of reporting a high quality-of-life impact.

“As expected, participants recruited from an enthusiast-leaning channel reported considerably greater benefits [of psychedelic use] than those recruited from a general-population platform. Even after controlling for mindset, setting, motivation, and personality, sample membership remained the strongest predictor of quality-of-life impact,” the study authors concluded.

“The persistent effect of sample membership suggests that the two groups differ in additional ways not captured by our measures, for example in cultural expectations, social context, or demographic composition, shaping reported outcomes. These results underscore the need for caution when interpreting findings from psychedelic studies that rely on highly engaged user populations.”

The study sheds light on important methodological issues that studies of psychedelic effects face. However, the authors note some limitations. For example, the two groups had demographic differences; the general sample was overwhelmingly from the United States, while the enthusiast sample lacked country-of-residence data for most participants (though a portion resided in Sweden). This introduces the possibility of cross-cultural differences influencing the results.

Additionally, it should be noted that the Prolific sample likely included many psychedelic enthusiasts as well. Because of this, the difference between the two groups in this study likely underestimates the true difference between the general population and psychedelic enthusiasts.

The paper, “Selection Bias in Psychedelic Research: Comparing Self-Reported Quality-Of-Life Impact Between Enthusiasts and a General Population Sample,” was authored by Jonathan Bendz, Linus Schäfer, David Sjöström, Sverker Sikström, and Petri Kajonius.

  11. Life Under the Mask: What Low Wages Reveal About American Communities

This chart, published by Visual Capitalist yesterday (ref: snapshot below also), triggered a long-held intuition and finally pushed me to do some additional reading and research. A former Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State, this is the kind of fact-based assessment I spent years doing while looking at economic and social conditions overseas. The difference now is simple: I am no longer bound by institutional guardrails that required a more careful, political tone. I get […]

  12. Weird as it sounds, I think we need an actual law, like some kind of bill of rights, that says you can't notify me on my phone without offering me highly fine-tuned control of each kind of message.

Notifications intrude into my life. Sometimes my phone is on waiting for emergencies or other high-priority issues while I sleep. If a friend wakes me, I can have them dialed up or down in priority.

But Android is designed so Audible won't let me have control of my audiobooks in the lock screen without notifications turned on, yet once I've done that, Audible has no compunction against advertising new book releases in the middle of the night via notifications. I should be able to get cash compensation in court for that.

And my USB-C cable, once I plug it into my Android phone insists on randomly popping up an utterly inscrutible notification saying "you need to log in if you want to see notifications", or some such, and then when I do there is no notification to see. It was just random.

And Android Auto likes to give me two completely pointless notifications, one when I plug my phone into the car and one saying Android Auto is available. The first one I don't need a notification about because I just plugged in my phone. But more importantly, the second one is a lie. Android Auto MIGHT be available and it confirms nothing. The handshake may have been done wrong, so all it tells me is the thing I know already, which is that Android Auto is on the phone. But I might have to pull the plug and replug it to be properly connected. So the notification is worse than pointless and just floods my screen with stuff I don't care about that appears to need immediate attention. And then Android asks, as soon as I disconnect it, how my experience was. I always say "Bad" because part of my experience is getting asked that pesky message that I do not want and would happily say "never do this".

These all seem like technical problems, but they are not. They are reminders that we no longer control our lives, that companies can, at a whim, intrude into our lives with pointless rituals that whittle away our existence. I'm not being metaphorical when I say we need laws on this. I absolutely mean that if we don't write strong law on this, it will only get worse. Or we need to enforce the 4th Amendment on a theory, like Larry Lessig has effectively said in the past, that programmatic code is effectively a kind of government that binds us and our choices in life as surely as legal code does.

But what DO we get laws about? Having to login to use an operating system so they can track us better, know who we are and where we are at every moment. We need laws against such laws.

Do they even enjoy their victory at all? Never have I seen a social movement that everyone knew about be crushed so thoroughly and so quickly as woke was – so why aren't they cheering?

What's the point of destroying so many peoples lives if they can't even feel happy about it?

Areas of discussion in the Q&A:
    - A report on the methodology deriving these indicators potentially to be published.
    - Does #BeyondGDP include GDP?

  22. Pixel Watch 2 - Privacy Preserving Setup

I've been trying everything i could think of to make the watch work under GrapheneOS - Here is what i learned:

    • Unpairing the Watch means factory resetting it.
    • Every feature (literally everything) is google dependent (who would have thought.. i know)
    • Pairing with your phone requires the "Pixel Watch" -App to be installed on your main profile (not work, not private space) alongside Google Play Services. There's no way around.

This is obviously unacceptable. So i did a bit of research and found a way that will not only be way more practical, it will also be private.

First i created a second user on my Phone, installed Google Play Services and the pixel watch app on it, logged in with a newly created google account and completed the setup.

I know some people use a chinese version of the WearOS app to bypass the google login. Since i don't want a chinese app to configure my watch, i didn't even try that.

After the watch was set up, i continued and:

    • Deleted the user profile from which i connected the Watch
    • Enabled wireless debugging
    • Debloated the watch as good as possible (i will have to root the watch in the future to properly do it)
    • Removed the Google account in the settings
    • Cleared all Bluetooth preferences
    • Enabled Bluetooth discovery
    • Installed KDE Connect on it (not meant for WearOS but it does work barely)

The watch is now in a state where i can use it daily.

But i also want to make use of all those fancy quality-of-life features, like heartrate monitoring, sleep tracking and so on.

    Now comes the fun part.

I've created a basic Kotlin project with both a mobile and WearOS app.

    I will implement features like:

    • Notification sync
    • Call notifications
    • Media Player Control
    • Weather (openweathermap)
    • Heartrate monitoring
    • Sleep tracking
    • Do not Distrurb Sync
    • Homelab integrations (Nextcloud, Immich, Uptime Kuma, ..)
    • And much more ..

The goal is to keep the watch offline, let the phone do the heavy lifting and communicate with a selfhosted database. I may even add a frontend and an API so people can integrate it for their needs.

Sounds good but why don't you just buy an #opensource #smartwatch like the #pinetime - You may ask.

Because as much as i hate to admit it, i love the design, the look and feel of the pixel watch. And i'm sure that i'm not the only one.

I also bought this one cheap for around 120€ #refurbished. So the value i can get out of it seems pretty good to me.

So much for today. I haven't even started tackling the Bluetooth connection yet 😅. Let's see how that turns out

I have added a poll to this post to see how many people would be interested in a setup like this. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, ideas or expertise in that regard.

    Cheers.

  32. Here is a graph, summarizing my amazing weekend. The legal threshold in Belgium (Walloon Region) is 40 dB(A) at night and 50 dB(A) during the day. Not a single moment of respite, calm or serenity. We no longer know what to do. It is driving us crazy.

The building to which these machines are attached is empty from 5 pm to 8 am, and at weekends. Yet the machines continue to run throughout the night, despite the absence of any occupants, exposing nearby residents to continuous noise well above the legal limits.
