I see via a headline in the Daily Beast that Jimmy Carter's grandson has said he’s at the very end.

A much better ex-president than he ever was a president, I’m sorry to see him go. Ronald Reagan succeeded him, but Carter outlived Reagan by far and has been sharp to the very end. (Reagan suffered Alzheimer’s and I haven’t yet seen anything conclusive about when that set in, whether or not it began while he was president.)

As I think about that dichotomy between a routinely evil President Carter and a saintly Ex-President Carter, I think also of Robert Reich telling a story in which under questioning from Reich’s wife, Bill Clinton admitted to worrying about workers every day. It makes me wonder: Are the elite really oblivious? Or is it that they do see—I’ve been subscribed to relatively high brow publications that do indeed talk about #SocialInequality—and are, for what ever reason, compelled away from doing the right thing?

What is this motivation really? Is it simple greed even as any college graduate will have been exposed to the social sciences and therefore the social sciences on social inequality?

Is it simply about power even as they experience for themselves the sword of Damocles?

If not these, perhaps in some combination, then what?

If we understand this with some nuance, it may well be their undoing.
