    Prosfygika Resist

    The Greek state is planning the eviction of “Oi Prosfygika” in Athens, one of the largest self-organized housing communities in Europe. This space represents collective living, social projects, and resistance against displacement.

    Since February 5, Aristotelis Chantzis has been on hunger strike. On May 1, Suzon Doppagne joined him. Both are protesting against the impending eviction and for the preservation of the community. But what exactly is Prosfygika?

  2. Resistance, Remembrance, and Comunidad: Cinco de Mayo, Mount Pleasant, and the Rebuilding That Erases

    Cinco de Mayo is often misunderstood in the United States. It is reduced to a marketing holiday, a day of beer specials, paper flags, mariachi clichés, and the shallow consumption of Mexican culture without the burden of remembering Mexican history. But the heart of Cinco de Mayo is not consumption. It is resistance.

    The day remembers the Battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862, when Mexican forces defeated the French army, then one of the most powerful military forces in the world. It was not Mexican Independence Day. It was not the founding of Mexico. It was a day when a people under pressure from empire stood their ground. It was a day when the powerful were resisted by those who were supposed to lose. It was, at its deepest level, a day about memory, dignity, land, sovereignty, and the refusal to be swallowed by imperial appetite. (MySA)

    That is why, for me, Cinco de Mayo cannot be separated from another May 5: May 5, 1991, in Washington, D.C.

    I was there.

  8. As the #UK #localelections on #May7 approach, #Labour in #Lambeth seems increasingly desperate as they post flyer after flyer on the #Green peril & supposed scary record of #Greens councils (here's to you #Bristol, a "totally out of control budget with HUGE tax hike" of.... 4.99%!). Will people choose "Green Chaos" over 20 years of unchecked Labour power cosying to Texan & Qatari interests while flattening council estates & #community spaces coyly called #gentrification? Dafuck they will!

    #Prosfygika - one of the largest squatted communities in Europe - means 'refugee homes' in Greek; a stronghold of #partisan resistance in the December 1944 uprising, which left the blocks scarred by bullet holes. Nowadays this neighbourhood fights against the ongoing state-backed #gentrification of #athens

    Join for a participatory #theatre #workshop inspired by the work of #DowntownEastside #documentarian and organiser Sid Chow Tan! From organizing with the #Chinese #HeadTax and #ExclusionRedress movement to documenting countless actions against #gentrification and #displacement - Sid’s #art of #activism captured a spirit of class-consciousness, humour, and #solidarity. His vast archive depicts four decades of the struggles, victories, celebrations, and everyday lives of #DTES and #Chinatown communities and organisers. In these introductory workshops, participants will be introduced to theatre techniques that will connect themes from the Sid Tan archives to our lives and neighbourhood issues today.

    Please note, these workshops are 3 hours long.

    Free admission and no theatre experience necessary! Pre-registration required. Refreshments will be served. #Cantonese and #Mandarin interpretation will be provided. 13. Lodging to Affordable Living 🏡: Motel Conversions in the Four Corners Region

    The following working list identifies those motels and hotels that have been converted into dwellings for the unhoused, those with special needs, and/or to provide affordable housing options in cities across the Four Corners Region of the southwestern United States (the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah). These housing options may include, but not be limited to:

    • Income-based housing;
    • Section 8 housing;
    • Housing for those with special needs
    • Housing for needy seniors;
    • Housing for young adults and/or women;
    • Housing for those returning to society from recovery programs or incarceration;
    • Inexpensive housing/studios for artists;
    • Veterans housing; as well as
    • Transitional/interim housing for unhoused individuals or families.

    Motel conversions provide another tool for municipalities for combating homelessness, gentrification, and rising housing costs. It also helps revitalize and reinvigorate older highway commercial districts such as Historic U.S. 66 in New Mexico and Arizona or Old U.S. 40 in Colorado. In some cases, such a conversion from lodging to affordable living quarters may require amendments to local zoning codes to allow such housing options in commercial zoning districts.

    Peace!

  16. I got to visit my buddy Yale's (the other TA at Pilchuck for Galen) studio in Seattle. It is on a manmade port island in Seattle, right next to a sheet metal shop Yale used to work at. What a space!

    Yale fixed it up a bunch and put a neon shop and metal shop in it. There used to be many artists here but Yale and another artist are the only two left. Weed grow operations are moving into industrial warehouses like these and offering more money to landlords- so all the artists get kicked out as grow lights, and watering equipment move in. Yes, the space smelled like weed.

    It's perfect for him, and it seems like with favorable industrial gas and electric prices- it's not a bad place to be. Yale has some amazing metal working tools and his neon shop is expanding its plasma capabilities. Excited to see his work grow- he has a solo show in downtown Seattle later this fall.
