  1. The Meadow Gold District in Tulsa OK is a way to see a lot of Route 66 nostalgia in one place, including Muffler Men statues, neon, and a nearby Musical Road that plays Woody Guthrie when you drive over it:

  3. No, @BBC_News_Labs , Banksy's generous gifts to the nation cost the British taxpayer absolutely nothing. Intentionally defacing these internationally significant works of public art is what has cost money.

  5. 🧵 1/2

Here is my "Unpopular on Mastodon" toot of the day.

    I dislike Banksy.

Although I am often (not always) in sympathy with the messages his work conveys, these are often presented in a form that is dull, hectoring, or disagreeably sentimental -- what we might term radical twee.

The populist "you know what you like and it's not that museum stuff" current that has marked his career is uncomfortably close to the right wing cultural politics of which he imagines himself a leading opponent.

I also dislike graffiti in general. This Jonathan Jones article from a decade ago remains on point:

  12. I spoke with someone collecting oral histories about the neighborhood, and of course had to talk about the incredible #PublicArt collection we have here. I could have gone on for hours!
I talked about the project I did casting some of the sculptures and historic buildings last year, but somehow didn't manage to show him any photos 🙃

  14. When Sculptures Come Alive (9 Photos)

These sculptures do more than stand still. Wire catches the wind, scrap metal finds a rhythm, rice straw grows teeth, and shipping containers settle into meditation. These sculptures turn still materials into bodies, gestures, and personalities that feel only one heartbeat away from moving. 16. When Trees Become Art (8 Photos)

The tree completes the idea. Living trunks become hair, doorways and the starting point for a forest spiral. Willow and recycled wood become figures of their own. In each of these ten works, the tree is part of the artwork—not just the setting. More: See 40 Ways Street Art Meets Nature ✂️ “Pruning” — By […]
