    “Genoppt” (Bumpy surface)

This has some bumps, at least! Meet Shelby, one of the mascots of Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal — famously a waterway of toxic sludge that has been undergoing a frustratingly slow cleanup effort for decades. Shelby is one of “three cheerful mutants” representing the microscopic life of the canal. More info on the wall sign if you zoom in, and the Wikipedia article on the Gowanus is a fascinating read.

  2. Headed into downtown New Bedford to check out the newly-unveiled statue of Herman Melville by sculptor Steff Rocknak today, since I wasn't able to sneak out of work for the unveiling itself.

The Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Park, designed for the 1964 New York World’s Fair and still regarded as an unofficial symbol of Queens.

  5. The Meadow Gold District in Tulsa OK is a way to see a lot of Route 66 nostalgia in one place, including Muffler Men statues, neon, and a nearby Musical Road that plays Woody Guthrie when you drive over it:

  6. No, @BBC_News_Labs , Banksy's generous gifts to the nation cost the British taxpayer absolutely nothing. Intentionally defacing these internationally significant works of public art is what has cost money.

Here is my "Unpopular on Mastodon" toot of the day.

    I dislike Banksy.

Although I am often (not always) in sympathy with the messages his work conveys, these are often presented in a form that is dull, hectoring, or disagreeably sentimental -- what we might term radical twee.

The populist "you know what you like and it's not that museum stuff" current that has marked his career is uncomfortably close to the right wing cultural politics of which he imagines himself a leading opponent.

I also dislike graffiti in general. This Jonathan Jones article from a decade ago remains on point:

Please don't tell me that this symptom of urban blight is somehow "progressive". Instead of drooling over Robin Gunnigham's private organization...
