Story highlights the failure of elected leaders. Another of those "private #donations provide what #government cannot" stories, like a successful #GoFundMe campaign when #insurance denied coverage.
And poor Jeyne, this being her first room alone. What will happen to her when she #retires in not so many years? When your job is your #home, what future is there for the #elderly.
#Volunteers point out that this success is not scalable, & #schools don't want to be #landlords.

An old friend of mine -- it'll be fifty years next fall -- lives in an illegal rental in Oakland, California. It's illegal in the sense that it was never registered with the Oakland rental board. His original landlords sold the property to a flipper a few months ago and the new owners have been trying to get my friend to move out.
They started by offering him cash for keys a few months ago, but two different lawyers advised him not to take the deal because it came with onerous conditions (that I can't remember right now) so he didn't take it. Then they progressed to yelling at him and calling him names.
A couple weeks ago they escalated to smashing out his car windows and a few of the apartment windows. They also spraypainted the word "PEDO" on an exterior wall. The cops, doing their job by protecting the landlord, refused to do anything because there's putatively no proof that the landlord had it done. They also told him to remove his personal belongings from the bathroom and the kitchen because they were going to start demolition, they said.
Then last night they escalated again. At around 2 am he was working at the computer when someone smashed both the windows near his desk and sprayed pepper spray through the holes. They also smashed out all his car windows again, sprayed his front door with pepper spray, and painted "PEDO" on the side of his car. S again the cops, who were apparently personally sympathetic, still said they couldn't do anything. One of the cops advised him to file a civil suit pro se.
He's physically unharmed and is talking to lawyers and doesn't feel like giving in yet, but of course he's worried, especially given last year's murder of a tenant by a landlord who wanted the property vacant to increase the sale value. If you follow me chances are good that you already understand the intrinsic scumminess of landlords, and I do too, but it's still surprising and shocking to see the lengths they'll go to to collect money they are absolutely convinced is theirs by right.

Gothamist: New Jersey restricts rent-setting algorithms amid rising housing costs. “The law, called the FAIR Act, prohibits certain types of sensitive data — including rental prices, housing supply, occupancy levels and lease termination dates — from being used to inform rent-setting algorithms. It also bars landlords from coordinating to raise rents in parallel. The law will take effect […]

PetaPixel: Mayor Mamdani Says Landlords Can’t Secretly Use AI Images to Advertise Properties. “New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani is having a very busy week. Just a day after announcing a ‘click-to-cancel’ rule aimed at companies like Adobe, Mamdani is cracking down on ‘deceptive landlord practices,’ including using AI-generated and AI-edited images designed to make properties look more […]

https://www.davidslack.net/what-a-phoney/ - praises recent #solar-power-subsidising, but with qualifications
One of the commenters says: '...My stock response to the Tory taunts of Labour "free stuff" is who pays for the #coalition's corporate welfare to the #tobacco industry (excise rebates for heated tobacco products), the #oil refinery owners (Marsden #diesel storage expansion), critical minerals #mining (funding from the Regional #Infrastructure Fund), #farming (primary sector growth fund), #landlords (mortgage interest tax relief) etc?'
Apart from the solar good news, David Slack goes on to berate the #PM, no less.
'So much of what I have written about this mediocre PM of vaulting self-regard has had to end with: What a phoney.
'Up he goes this week to Whangārei to tell 300 people I don't have to work for a living I'm just really into being your mediocre PM. And he's brought with him all the stock Monty Burns lines about them high and mighty bureaucrats in the Capital.
' "I love getting in and out of Wellington as quickly as possible and getting out and about and meeting with people because from the front line you actually hear the opportunities and also the challenges that exist."
'and
' "We're not mandating it from Wellington. We believe in localism. We believe in devolution. You make your decisions. That's a conversation you and your community need to have."
'Yeah good one Old Mate Grabaseat. Why don't you tell us how you let Auckland decide about its fuel tax?
'He's the Faux Outsider making empty promises of Faux Devolution. .....'
Another commenter takes up the PM's "We're not mandating it from Wellington. We believe in localism. We believe in devolution."
'That explains the school lunch atrocity, then. And the forced local body amalgamations. And telling us we can't put our medication packets in the recycling even when our local council is perfectly happy with them. Phoney is too kind... '(#Feilding has special collection bins for medical blister packs.)

Congrats, #NewJersey! In six months or so you'll have the right to buy an appliance that your landlord should actually be providing already. Oh and your landlord might not even let you install it anyway.

Buuuuut challenges remain!
- Are the new large #plugin battery systems legal? How do manufacturers advertise them?
- We still have lots of #landlords trying to prevent tenants from using #pluginsolar with absurd arguments
- the price of mounting needs go go down and we need it to be certified

"Family of Eric Bigone files suit claiming landlord killed him to sell Sunset rental
A wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the family of Eric Bigone, the 58-year-old man killed in the Outer Sunset last month, alleges that the owners of a home rented by Bigone did so to sell the property.
The civil lawsuit was filed on June 9 by Dino Bigone, Eric’s son and the representative of his estate, seeking a court order that would freeze the sale of the property. It also seeks damages from the landlord, Philippe Chagniot, and his wife, Barbara Chagniot.
It goes on to state that, starting in January of this year, the Chagniots began harassing Bigone in an attempt to get Bigone to leave the property that he had rented from them since 2023.
After Bigone refused to leave, the suit claims, the Chagniots began refusing to accept his rent payments, which they had previously only accepted in the form of cash, allegedly in order to evade taxes. In response, Bigone hired an attorney to help him continue to make rent payments.
State law gives the landlords of single-family properties considerable leverage over tenants. Among other things, single-family homes are exempt from rent control.
The suit states that Chagniot told Bigone that he had filed paperwork to evict Bigone under the Ellis Act, but there is no evidence Chagniot ever did so. Instead, the suit claims, the Chagniots plotted to kill him so they could sell the empty property.

Following mixed feedback and extended discussions, City Council voted to prohibit the use of Ratio Utility Billing Systems (RUBS), in which tenants in a multi-unit complex can be billed flat rates for utilities rather than by exact usage.
