Dear Activists
As I mentioned earlier, I will definitely be available to meet with you starting Monday.
The vice-rector and I are unavailable on Monday at 4 p.m. However, we would be happy to meet with a small delegation from your group at 10 a.m. that day. We have arranged a meeting room on the Coupure campus for this purpose. Over the past few months, we have already met with activists in a similar setting on several occasions (including most recently on April 20) and find this format essential for fostering a respectful and constructive dialogue.
We would appreciate hearing as soon as possible whether you will be able to attend on Monday.

We realised throughout this evening that we've been lacking in communicating these evolutions to the broader group. Sorry for that. Here's our full answer to Petra's email:

Beste rector De Sutter, beste vice-rector Reynaert
Zoals eerder gecommuniceerd nodigen wij jullie expliciet uit voor een spokescouncil, onze dagelijkse horizontale vergadering.
De voorbije 2,5 jaar hebben studenten in heel Vlaanderen in gelijkaardige omstandigheden het gesprek gevoerd met hun rectoren. Wij ervaren dit format als een noodzakelijke voorwaarde om dit belangrijke maatschappelijke debat op een democratische en transparante manier te voeren. Daarom gaan we niet in op jullie voorstel voor een gesprek met een beperkte delegatie in een gesloten vergaderzaal. We verwachten dat jullie deelnemen aan een spokescouncil, zodat alle studenten en personeelsleden dit kunnen volgen en eraan kunnen deelnemen.
Het debat rond een academische boycot leeft breed binnen de academische gemeenschap. Een overleg achter gesloten deuren met een beperkte delegatie doet hier geen recht aan.
De eis tot een academische boycot van alle Israëlische instellingen wordt bovendien niet enkel door ons gedragen. Uit verschillende bevragingen blijkt dat een brede meerderheid van de studentenpopulatie dit standpunt ondersteunt, net als heel wat professoren en medewerkers binnen de UGent-gemeenschap. Om dat te staven, verwijzen we graag nog eens naar de open brief die jullie voor jullie aanstelling als rectorenduo zelf ondertekenden.
Nogmaals, dit is geen onderhandeling tussen een groepje individuen, maar een maatschappelijk debat dat de volledige universitaire gemeenschap aanbelangt. Een gesloten gesprek is daarom geen optie voor ons.
Onze eerstvolgende spokescouncil gaat door op dinsdag om 19u.
Wij verwachten dat jullie op korte termijn bevestigen of jullie deelnemen aan deze spokescouncil, zodat de dialoog waar jullie zelf het belang van benadrukten effectief kan worden opgestart.

Hihi! As you may know there has been an #encampment going on at Campus Coupure to pressure the #UGhent to implement a full #academic #boycott. In light of this, we as Ghent Student Encampment are organizing a #protest on Thursday the 30th of April. The plan is to have a collective lunch from 12h onwards at the encampment and a march at 13h30 from Campus Coupure to the Rectorate, where there will be a protest with speeches and chanting! The goal is to get as many people there as possible to put pressure on the University
At 12:30, there is collective lunch; at 13:30 we walk from coupure to the rectorate where we'll arrive and protest/chant/make noise

HB 2880: #Banning #protest encampments on campus
Would bar protest encampments on the campuses of state colleges and universities without prior authorization. Under the bill, individuals or groups that establish an unauthorized “encampment” would no longer be lawfully present on campus for the purpose of speech protections under Arizona law; they would be criminally liable to prosecution for trespass and damaging public property; and they would be liable for “direct and indirect costs” of any damage “that resulted from the individual’s intentional or negligent conduct relating” to the encampment. The bill defines “#encampment” as “temporary shelter” installed on campus and used to stay overnight or “for a prolonged period of time.” The bill would require colleges and universities to order individuals to dismantle and vacate unauthorized encampments; if the individuals refuse to comply, the institution would be required to take disciplinary action and report the individuals to local law enforcement for trespassing. The bill's sponsor said that it was motivated by #ProPalestine protests on college campuses.

HB 2007: Harsh penalties for protesters who conceal their identity
**Note: HB 2007 was signed into law following amendments that removed the most restrictive provisions.** As originally introduced in the House, the bill made it a felony to wear any kind of #disguise at a protest. The introduced bill broadly prohibited disguises, "whether partial or complete," that an individual wore at a protest, political event, or any other public event in order "to evade or escape discovery, recognition or identification." Under the introduced bill, police would have had authority to detain any individual wearing a disguise in order to verify his or her identity and determine if the person had committed a crime; violation of the disguise ban would have been a Class 6 felony, subject to one year in prison. The sponsor of the bill said it was inspired by clashes between police and protesters, some of whom were masked, outside a 2017 rally for President #Trump. Following widespread criticism, the bill was comprehensively revised to a single provision that would allow courts to consider it an aggravating factor, for sentencing purposes, if an individual wore a #mask or other disguise to hide their face while committing a criminal offense.
