  2. @annaf
And Burnham should take serious note of this:
"And last year the Ulez helped us to get levels of nitrogen oxide – one of the most toxic pollutants in our air – within legal limits almost two centuries before experts predicted we would. Between 2019 and 2024, estimated deaths associated with air pollution in London fell by an estimated 40%."
Because unlike Sadiq, Burnham backed down as soon as there was serious opposition to the already very weak Clean Air Zone for #GreaterManchester.

  7. MANCHESTER: Rightwing votes didn't transfer well.

The #GreaterManchester Mayoral Election opinion poll predicted (or assumed) 100% use of #secondpreferences in each of the left and right blocs.

The actual result was that 73% of leftwing votes transferred to Labour, but only 52% of rightwing votes transfered to ReformUK.

    Green + LibDem = 79,670. Transfers to Bev Craig (Labour) = 58,076 (73٪)

    Restore + Cons = 87,310. Transfers to Sian Astley (ReformUK) = 45,250 (52%)

  10. Lots of people are decrying the low turnout in the #GreaterManchester mayoral by-election as evidence of disengagement, or of people not seeing the contest as important.

I’d assumed it had more to do with the result feeling like a foregone conclusion, plus a touch of election fatigue.

It was also originally framed as an epic battle between Reform and Labour, but the Clacton by-election rather drew Reform’s attention away from it.

  11. As a Green Party member I'm disappointed in the Green vote, but elated that Reform received such a drubbing. However, Restore received 8.7% of the vote, beating the Tories, which is very concerning.

Also concerning is the very low 25% turnout, which indicates a lack of faith in the post of mayor and democracy in general.

  12. Kind of disappointing that the turnout for the most powerful directly elected executive politician in the UK is a paltry 25%.

I'd hope that the use of the only non #FPTP system in England would help, but #SupplementaryVote isn't that interesting when the winner is a foregone conclusion.
