  2. The rave secret: why middle-aged women are larging it – and seeing big health benefits
    By Amy Fleming

For those who are burned out, perimenopausal, or both, dancing all night can be a panacea. It’s great exercise, lowers stress, boosts energy and provides connection. No wonder so many are doing it

  3. Long carried, or: At last, a form

    A Bussokusekika

    I long carried this
    through doubt, return, loss, learning
    now I trace my steps
and see the road beneath them
the way now winds less sharply
my feet now choose firmer ground

    Tanka Tuesday

For Tanka Tuesday, we are encouraged to compose a Bussokusekika verse.

    Bussokusekika?

Bussokusekika, or “Buddha’s Footprint Poems,” are an early Japanese poetic form associated with inscriptions beside a carved Buddha footprint at Yakushi-ji Temple in Nara. Each poem follows a six-line syllabic pattern of 5-7-5-7-7-7. The sixth line often repeats or rephrases the fifth, reflecting an older song tradition in which the closing line was sung again. The surviving poems largely praise the Buddha or reflect on impermanence, suffering, and the need for spiritual understanding.

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

    Ben Harper (b. 1969)

Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!

  5. I walk, or: Carrying less

    A Sijo

    sandals, Middle Eastern tan lines
    earbuds playing Billy Joel;
the old words sound and sound right
    yet their teenage listener has blurred;
    midlife's now loosening its grip
    I walk on, carrying less

    Sijo?

A Korean verse form related to haiku and tanka and comprised of three lines of 14-16 syllables each, for a total of 44-46 syllables. Each line contains a pause near the middle, similar to a caesura, though the break need not be metrical. The first half of the line contains six to nine syllables; the second half should contain no fewer than five. Originally intended as songs, sijo can treat romantic, metaphysical, or spiritual themes. Whatever the subject, the first line introduces an idea or story, the second supplies a “turn,” and the third provides closure. Modern sijo are sometimes printed in six lines.

  18. Good Morning! Beige blessings be.

Today I think we might see about going out somewhere. Maybe to an English Heritage site nearby. It has a wonderful sense of peace and I feel like I need some of that right now. I will see how I feel in a little while.

I also need to do some laundry, and we need to do a food shop so I must think about what foods we need.

Maybe I will do some crocheting later too.

Honestly, I have no idea how you manage hearing about my high-octane rock and roll lifestyle each day!

  20. We've had some warm temperatures here on the prairies the last couple of days, and it's mostly looking like above-freezing during the day for the foreseeable future [1]. So today I pulled the snow tires off the cars and put the "all-season" [2] ones on.

Please join me tomorrow in celebrating the semi-annual festival of Oh My Gawd Why Are My Knees On Fire And I Didn't Even Know I Had Muscles In That Part Of My Thigh.

[1] To be fair, this is about 5-6 days max. They don't bother to even try forecasting further out than that here.

[2] Really "three-season", if you live anywhere where it gets more than a handful of degrees below freezing.

  22. This is a fascinating analysis on the gradual development of medieval thought focusing on particular on the rise of the ascending theory of governance and how mediaeval thought far from being fossilised and an antiquarian provides the genetic link modern notions of democracy and civic rights.

  26. One thing nobody prepares you for in mid-life is just how bland things become.

You’ve heard your favorite song a billion times. Know every word of your favorite movie. You’ve fought every battle a thousand times.

Everything is as it has been and little is novel.
