A ROBOT I ACTUALLY NEED NOW 💎
I’m 70, disabled by stroke, and I’ve been thinking about what would genuinely improve my life.
Not a robot that dances.
Not one that makes coffee or does perfect backflips.
A BATHROOM ROBOT.
A dedicated, non-humanoid care system designed specifically to help me with showering, toileting, drying and dressing.
It could be fixed to a wall beside the shower or toilet, with one or two waterproof articulated arms. One arm could steady me while the other washes those hard-to-get places.
Water could run through the arm itself, with soft, interchangeable washing heads. Warm-air dryers could be built into the unit, reducing the need for towel drying.
It could wash the parts of my body that my disability prevents me from safely reaching; assist me with toileting and, after toileting, dry thoroughly; help with clothing; and perhaps eventually assist with nail care.
Because it lives in one bathroom, it doesn’t need legs, a face, or a humanoid body. It just needs to be extraordinarily safe, gentle, waterproof, reliable and easy to talk to.
THE AI COULD SIMPLY BE CONVERSATIONAL:
“Wash my back again, please.”
“You missed a bit behind my left leg.”
“I need help.”
“Stop.”
For me, showering is one of the most difficult and dangerous parts of daily life. I do less of it than I probably should for that very reason. My partner helps me now, and I’m deeply grateful, but a machine designed specifically for intimate care could give both of us more independence, dignity and privacy.
THIS IS WHERE I THINK ROBOTICS COULD BECOME GENUINELY TRANSFORMATIVE.
Don’t start by asking how closely a robot can imitate a human being.
Start by asking:
What physical problem do human beings desperately need solved?
I’d happily volunteer as a very demanding test pilot.

Any personal recommendations for grip products? Someone I know needs help gripping silverware etc. I'm seeing zillions of similar-looking products from brands which could all be AI false fronts for getting my money. Would love to hear from real people. Boosts welcome

Aging isn't random wear and tear — new research reveals it as a programmed 'remodelling of the cell society'

I love this & having just turned 74 & pretty fit & healthy my plan is also to hit 3 figures as long as I can remain healthy. I have a friend who only eats one meal a day, but drinks a lot of coffee & snacks all day on nuts or fruit. I’m a 3 times a day eater, but not big meals & while I have snacks, they sit in the cupboard for months.
I want to still be doing some of what I do now in my 80’s & 90’s. #Ageing #Health. -
APPARENTLY, AGEING HAS SETTINGS? 💎
I went looking for some genuinely good news this morning. Not politics. Not war. Not another billionaire doing something ghastly.
And I found something rather wonderful.
Scientists are increasingly interested not merely in lifespan, but in healthspan. In other words, not just keeping us alive longer while bits fall off, but keeping us healthier for more of the years we're alive.
A large study published this year followed more than 500 mice throughout their lives and found that restricting their daily eating window improved measures of healthy aging in both males and females.
The strongest results came from an eight-hour eating window. Male mice in that group also lived significantly longer, although they were eating somewhat fewer calories as well, so the story is not as simple as “fast and live forever.”
And, importantly, they were mice. Nobody has discovered the Fountain of Youth, and we do not yet know whether the same effects will translate into longer human lives.
But I still find the direction rather exhilarating.
I have practiced time-restricted eating for years, and I know what it has done for my own experience of being 70. I feel lighter in my body. Quieter. Less noise. More clarity.
That is personal experience, not scientific proof.
Perhaps the great achievement of aging research won't be making human beings live to 150. Perhaps it will be much simpler.
Being 80 and still walking. Being 90 and still thinking clearly. Remaining independent longer. Having fewer years at the end, dominated by disease and frailty.
As someone who has somehow arrived at 70 without being consulted about it, I find that rather wonderful.
I have every intention of being a nuisance at 100. Science has made no such promise.
I don't particularly need more life.
But I'll happily take more life in the years I've got.

My father and responsibility.
I’ve been struggling with my mental health when it comes to helping my father deal with his alzheimers from half a country away.
Part of it was feeling like I didn’t have a choice. Something that my brain reacts to negatively.
Another part is feeling responsible for him. I don’t want to be responsible for him. I’ve talked to him maybe once every few months for the last 20 years. I’ll help him with finances and making medical decisions should he be found incompetent, but I refuse to take responsibility for him.
So I keep saying this mantra in my head “helping does not mean being responsible for him.” He made the bed he’s in. I’m not saying that to blame him or anything. We are all falling through this life grasping at any ledge we can find to pull us back up. But I am not responsible for the choices that he made. For whatever reasons.
He knew he was getting older and that he would eventually need help but did NOTHING to take care of himself. He could have set things up for his future to take care of himself but he kept refusing.
One thing all of this has taught me is that I will NOT do that to my daughter. MY girlfriend and I will have legal directives created so that she doesn’t have to do anything. I don’t want to put that on her.
I can’t be responsible for him. I just don’t have it in me. I’ll help as much as I can, but I am not responsible for where he ends up or how he gets there.
Just typing that makes me feel like a piece of shit. But the more I deny it, the worse the stress becomes. I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night thinking “what if he does everything wrong and becomes homeless?” which makes it harder for me to go back to sleep. The truth is, I could do nothing for him if that were to happen. I’m not in a position to do so even if I wanted to.
And the truth is, from this far away, there’s little that I can do. I can’t stop him from making purchases like the electric trike that he bought himself last week. I can only step in and help once he’s found incompetent. Who knows what will happen at that point?
I’ll go to the bank and give them his account number along with the POA papers. Then I’ll have access to his account, but I know the man well enough that if I push back on anything he does, he’s going to get pissed and possible remove me as POA. So in essence, until he’s found incompetent, there’s little that I can do.
“Helping is not being responsible for him.”
“Helping is not being responsible for him.”
“Helping is not being responsible for him.”
“Helping is not being responsible for him.”
“Helping is not being responsible for him.”
“Helping is not being responsible for him.”I know I probably sound like an uncaring piece of shit, but I do care. If I didn’t I wouldn’t be trying to help. If he were to become homeless I would feel awful for him. Thankfully Indiana has a lot of organizations to help him as he ages. His neighbors and the staff at the senior living home he’s in will and are trying help him with that. (they tell me they are trying anyway.)
Anyway, writing this was good therapy.

@mwt I mistakenly thought being vegetarian was enough, for years. My body suggested otherwise in the end.
On wards, I observed only mild difference in vegetarians, but obvious improvement in vegans.
Replacing ALL animal derived foods with plant based versions minimises the inflammatory reactions the body has to animal products, and minimises cholesterol which otherwise clogs the cardiovascular system, including arteries to the brain which can cause a form of dementia and other problems if occluded (blocked).
It is likely that change in one's skin to an extent reflects change internally. It took several weeks and then my skin was visibly more alive and stayed that way, pretty much. Smoother, that bit healthier. For me it truly wound the texture 'clock' back significantly, and I suspect similar happens internally as inflammation reduces.
In my experience, the inflammation-linked aging still occured on exposure to eggs, dairy and fats derived of or exposed to animal matter. It isn't only about eating the animal corpses. Nature seems to recognise and react. Each clogs, and I saw many more cardiovascular issues in those who ate the animal products you mention than vegans. I'd expect lapses to reverse benefits of abstaining from them ...
Obviously one should intelligently research to replace with the best alternative sources. For instance, algae-derived DHA supplementation for omega oils, B12, nuts for minerals etc. YouTube has some superb plant based chef feeds. Dr. Michael Greger is a great reviewer of nutritional evidence.
I phased changes in, as I learned of alternatives. Leaving ALL animal products behind, an oily film leaves the tongue after a few days and that was a barrier to getting all flavour. So plant foods start tasting that bit better. It awakened a greater love of fresh foods such as stir fries and salads. It also encourages better knowledge of spices, and egg replacements to get great cakes etc.

I really back this up.
Working in healthcare I noticed vegan patients looked younger and tended to have better blood results than those eating animal products. It was so obvious that I went vegan, having been conditioned to think it was extreme. It wasn't. It just took a little research to balance and source everything.
After 5 years, a meat eating 'friend' of identical age seethed with envy because I wasn't aging like he was.
At that point my parents went vegan. They are now horrified at the poor health of their meat eating contemporaries, all now clinging to daily statins and other medications my parents don't need.
Nature rewards kindness.
We are wired for the reward, but conditioned against it, by our societies, institutions, and profiteers. -
