Summary/Review:
The Beginning Comes After the End is a balm in a time of rising authoritarianism, supremacist movements, environmental degradation, and climate crises. While this collection of essays is a work of hope, I think it would be wrong to characterize it as blindly optimistic. Solnit reminds us of the real gains made since World War II in movements for civil rights and liberation, environmentalism, and indigenous repatriation. The movements of the past and their interconnections serve as examples of the world being changed for the better. And while destructive forces are now intent on destroying these gains, it helps to remember that their backlash is rooted in their belief that these things they hate are powerful and world-changing. Solnit’s work offers a vision that points us back toward that better world.

Only in the long view can you see the patterns emerging, the way the present builds on the past, the way past surprises guarantee more surprises are coming, the ingredients of change over years, decades, centuries. If you don’t see time on the scale of change, you don’t see change.
The assumption is that we might be at the end of something, even the end of time, for those fond of apocalypse and doom, but we couldn’t possibly be at the beginning of something else. We assume that the present is not in labor to bring forward a future unlike itself. And it is easier to see the old world dying, than the new world being born
Ideas have power, and while those who support them often dismiss that power, those who fear them recognize they can change the world . . . Ideas are seeds in that they are beginnings; if they succeed, they do so as they take on more tangible and concrete forms
The fact that we cannot save everything does not mean that we cannot save anything and everything we can save is worth saving.

Perfectly understandable. There is a lot of terrible things happening in the world, and having any form of justice sensitivity can make any exposure to it downright maddening. I know.If you're interested in how I reconcile preferring to be kind and positive with this, the upshot is that for me it comes from understanding the complexities of the situation. Not the details necessarily, I easily get overwhelmed from those. But instead the patterns and underlying systems that have led to our current situation, continue to fuel it, but yet understanding them suggests pathways to help deal with them. I've found that with this information, I am far more charitable regarding people's involvement in these patterns, as well as hopeful about the ways out of them.
If you (by which I mean anyone reading this) is interested in learning these things, you can take a look at them at the following web address. There's a lot there, so if you don't have the time and energy for it all, that is why I have the 'quick' version which is called the Bare Essentials level, bite-sized lessons in the various topics. If even that might be too much, or you prefer or need to begin with information more relevant to this discussion, I'd suggest starting at the Level 2 topic of Community & Cooperation, and then moving on to the Level 3 topics, to really see what I mean above, but really you can look at whatever you want in whatever order. But also keep in mind that all the topics are designed to support and reinforce each other, so the more you learn, the better you will understand and appreciate the other topics as well.

We talk about revolutions through simplified stories: heroes, villains, success, failure.
But real change is shaped by deeper forces - history, economics, ideology, institutions, culture, and the material conditions people are living through.
Often we fall back on comfortable liberal assumptions and narratives instead of asking harder questions about why movements emerge, how they transform, and why their outcomes become something different from their original hopes.
A better analysis needs more mess, not less.
Any understanding of change means looking beyond the slogans and into the systems that shape what becomes possible.

Watching this video reminded me how much activist history gets distorted by sectarianism.
At places like #Greenham, divisions formed around the "colour" of the gates - different ideologies, identities, and political cultures. The trouble is that the loudest and most conflict-driven voices end up telling the history afterwards.
The people saying *"look at me"* get remembered, while the people saying *"don't look at me, I'm busy, look at the issue"* are usually too busy doing the actual work to document it.
This leaves us with a skewed activist memory, where internal drama becomes history and the slow, collective labour that made things happen fades into the background.
It's not just a problem of the past. We keep reproducing the same mess today.

Every time someone shares an article about how terrible the world is, my first question is simple - What are you doing about it?
Outrage without action is another form of consumption, doomscrolling isn't organising, sharing isn't building, knowing isn't enough.
The world won't change because we comment on the mess. It changes when we create alternatives, challenge power, and work together to build something better.
