  1. The Sun Drift

The General Conference on Weights and Measures opens on Tuesday, October 13. The setting is the Palais des Congrès de Versailles, a short walk from the palace that Louis XIV built under the emblem of the sun. Delegates from the states party to the Metre Convention will spend three days on the business of measurement. Near the close of the meeting, at the twenty-fifth item of the agenda, they will vote on a paper called Draft Resolution C. The paper proposes that on May 20, 2027, the world's civil clock stop answering to the sky. Resolutions reach this conference after years of committee negotiation, and they are usually adopted as drafted. If this one carries, a deference that began on June 30, 1972, with the first leap second, comes to an end. […]

  3. On REAL HISTORY OF TWENTIETH CENTURY EUROPE, How And Why Civilization Is Betrayed

Western civilization has long become World Civilization but some insist on betraying it. We explore how and why.

Abstract: Support for Ukraine is not merely a geopolitical choice but a moral obligation in defense of civilization. Responding to criticism of Ukraine, a victim of what the Nuremberg called the ultimate crime against humanity, a (total) war of aggression… One must reject slogans and insults in favor of evidence, and contrast Ukraine’s democratic aspirations with Vladimir Putin’s long-established tyranny and systematic destruction of political opposition (including the very existence of Ukraine).

I emphasize Western military support and Ukraine’s technological adaptability as signs that the country is fighting intelligently rather than recklessly. The essay below then broadens into a historical argument that internal betrayal—the “fifth column”—has repeatedly enabled aggressive dictatorships, from the fall of France in 1940 to contemporary Russian influence operations.

Drawing parallels with Stalin, Hitler, and the medieval Mongol domination of northeastern Rus’, I argue that Europe’s failure to confront tyranny early has repeatedly prolonged catastrophe.

History on the largest scale is revealing: Louis XIV of France contributed to what would ultimately be much European mayhem, by throwing out of France around ten percent of the population… The Protestants… Those who protested too much… And thus creating a resentful refugee population and a glorification of brutality, a lesson in Europe for centuries to come.

The conclusion contends that opportunists and collaborators are motivated by power, money, and self-importance, making resistance to them an enduring civic duty if civilization is to survive.

    ***

A reader, Dawn Badolato, commented on my essay on the fact that it is Ukraine which founded Russia. I answer as a moral duty. Indeed, who says nothing, consent…

Patrice Ayme Ukraine sucks to put it bluntly, Patrice. Only the very old, very conservative or very uninformed support Ukraine at this point in time. They are killing their own people by sending them to the frontline in a war where they had many opportunities for peace, tortured and killed many in the Donbas, banned speaking Russian, destroyed many ancient Ukrainian and Russian churches. Ukraine’s government is sneakily stealing much farmland that belonged to the traditional peoples there; the people they are killing in an unnecessary battle with Russia. All I see is an incompetent, illegal, and corrupt leader in Zelensky. Most others in government there are Nazis and violent nihilists…. Also those thoroughly brainwashed by propaganda..

    ***

Saying that “Ukraine sucks” is an insult. Insults are not cogent arguments. Insults can be necessary, as abstracts, ultimate shortcuts… But they better be backed up with facts.

     .

If I say: “Putin is a tyrant!” That can be viewed as an insult, but it has behind itself plenty of arguments, and observations: Putin has been in power as leader of Russia for 27 years. Clearly an individual in power that long is an enemy of democracy. The longest reigning US President, extended by war, was FDR, 11 years and one month or so. Moreover, FDR had checks and balances: he claimed that Congress forced him to do some things.

Nothing wrong with “sucking”, by the way: Sunbirds suck, many butterfly species suck, and so do hymenopters. Putin, in contrast, kills journalists, opponents and apparently entire apartment blocks to get elected.

Putin also tried to poison to death the Ukrainian favorite for the presidential election in the early 2000s, twenty years ago. Viktor Yushchenko, the pro-Western Ukrainian presidential candidate who was poisoned in 2004 with dioxin and later became president. A declassified U.S. intelligence report, as reported in 2024, said Putin likely authorized the poisoning.

The extremely rare poisons used against many opponents were identified in Germany, France, the UK, and other European countries… To make sure no particular country was fingered by Putin.. The hallmarks of Putin’s poisoning exploit is that he uses poisons only the Russian military has made (they are illegal), or even poison dart frog poison, which nobody can suspect because, to produce it, the frogs have to be fed a special Amazonian diet not typically found around Moscow.

Putin also methodically killed any viable opposition, not just just political, but in society at large. A crucial aspect of democracy: democracy requires debate, democracy exists first of all to be the arena of debate. Putin has killed any possibility of opposition, that makes him debaticide.

France and Britain together have as much population as Russia and several times its GDP. They are fully behind Ukraine and even both had military personnel in uniform, as early as 2022, for everybody to see (inquiring on mass murders and war crimes in Kyiv suburbs, committed by the Russian military).

At this point more than 50 democracies, including the USA and its very old and conservative president support Ukraine by sending weapons: After the G7 French president Macron said Trump was definitively on the side of Ukraine and not neutral (that was already clear in Trump’s first term when he sent anti-tank weapons to Ukraine, something Obama was careful not to do)..

Britain and France supply many weapons, such as the stealth high precision, double tap Franco-British missile “Storm Shadow/Scalp”.which are used against the highest value target. France fabricates huge quantities of extremely precise self propelled GPS free “Hammer” bombs launched by Ukrainian Mig 29… Which can go 50 miles… France also provided Ukraine with SAMPT NG, an anti-ballistic missile similar but much better than the US Patriot. And so on. France supplied the Mirage interceptor, and several European countries provided F16. New weapons are coming like the famous Meteor, a European missile propelled at Mach 4+ by a statoreactor, and with the greatest kill radius of an air to air missile: it will be carried by Swedish interceptors..Truly, this is a war of all the democracies against tyranny.

Ukraine has recently captured Russian positions using only robots, and preserving their people’s lives. For years people wondered why Zelinskyy allowed so many students to escape the frontline: it was to produce brains. Ukraine now has a formidable arsenal of weapons often imitated from European or US weapons, but much cheaper. Although Australia showed the way by sending excellent drones made of cardboard, through which Putin’s radar waves went without resistance.

Zelinskyy is from a Jewish family and Russophone. He became a famous actor… In Russian. He had to take Ukrainian lessons, and millions of Ukrainians have done the same.

*** A crucial factor in the ephemeral victory of Nazi Germany and Stalinst Russia invading France in May-June 1940 was… TRAITORS.

    ***

FRENCH DEMOCRACY WAS BETRAYED IN 1940, CAUSING THE “STRANGE DEFEAT”::

France was the core of the rebooting of the collapsed Roman world, starting in the Fifth Century. This rebooting, by the Frankish leadership, involved a change of values, for example reinstituting religious tolerance, arts and science while outlawing slavery. However, more than a milleennium later, the tyrant Napoleon would insist in reestablsihing slavery overseas (he had the excuse of his wife being from a slve owning famiy). So progress, even in France, has not been smooth sailing: major civilizational inversions are all over the history of France, let alone Europe. In particular, as we will see, under the influence of the plutocratic Italian Catherine and tyrannical Louis, culturally mostly a Spaniard, France would demolish Clovis’ tolerance… With pan-European disastrous consequences, over many centuries. Eleven centuries after said religious tolerance had been imposed by the Franks, Catherine and then Louis repeated the horrors and errors of Roman emperors Constantine and Theodosius I!

In 1939-1940-1941, France was betrayed by her child the USA. But even that betrayal should not have been enough to cause the French defeat. There was also internal betrayal. Around 25% of French adults followed the French Communist Party, whose ultimate boss, Stalin, was formally allied to Hitler.(Russian Soviets had been allied to the Kaiserreich since 1916, when the Kaiser exfiltrated Lenin and his entourage from Switzerland to Russia…)

French traitors aligned with the Kremlin and its ally in Berlin caused trouble in the crucial aviation sector, including strikes and sabotage. The French government reacted erroneously, by not striking back with the full force of the state at war. Instead, it ordered the planes not be armed with the heavy guns which it felt the Communists could use in an insurrection.

The end result was beyond disastrous. On May 10, 1940, when the Nazi Panzer spilled out of the Belgian Ardennes where, somehow the Belgians had failed to detect them, let alone blown up the bridges, France had thousands of planes but only 35 state of the art Dewoitine 520, the French equivalent of Spitfire and Me 109. 500 Dewoitine 520 had been built, but they were not armed, because of the trouble they caused in the Dewoitine factories, obeying the Kremlin.

In the following weeks, the Nazis lost around 1500 fighter planes, and several hundred aircrews. In spite of the fact France had just around 7% of its best planes in the war.

Marc Bloch, an historian assassinated by the Nazis in 1944, called the debacle of 1940 a “STRANGE DEFEAT” (Bloch was honored, as deserved, on June 23, 2026, when his remains were brought to the Pantheon.). I did not read the book recently, but I doubt Bloch realized how important the betrayal factor was in the “strange defeat”.

This was typical: the so-called “fifth column” now called “hybrid warfare” played a crucial role in 1940.

PLUTOCRATS UNITE! PUTIN WAS PRETTY MUCH A PRODUCT, NOT JUST OF THE KGB, BUT ALSO OF EUROPEAN PLUTOCRACY:

So it was with Putin. Europe, misled by its guiding plutocrats sneakily telerobotizing their employed politicians, did betray civilization and democracy when, over more than two decades, it ignored Putin’s tyrannical and lethal ways. That Germany was as usual clueless, and it became ever more dependent upon the Kremlin.

However France, in particular, remembering 1939-1940, should have known better. Even as we speak, top of the art Russian heavy weapons, tanks, armored personal carriers, planes, anti-aircraft defense, use French military electronics and optronics sold to Russia even after Putin started to invade Ukraine in 2014: when Hollande and Macron were trying to seduce Putin while making a buck. Now, finally French missiles are slamming into Russian electronics factories. But it should not have come to that, if Putin had been called back to order as early as his bloody reign started.

Why did the European plutocrats feel so friendly to Putin? Simple: Russian plutocrats extracted wealth from Russia and transferred it to Europe, pushing prices up there. At the same time, Russian plutocrats opened Russia for their Western colleagues. Western and Eastern plutocrats unite!

All this worked well, until the old Russian mentality, led by Putin, realized on one hand that they were losing control, as Russia was westernizing and on the other hand Putin made an analysis similar to that of Adolf Hitler, after he killed many people in his way, and the European politicians stayed friendly as if he, the killer, was the equal of these wet rags. Greed also helped: why couldn’t Russia “insure the defense of Europe” as Putin put it euphemistically… (In an interview in a French magazine.). Surely, as Hitler pointed out, those meek and weak democracies couldn’t not defend themselves? The French defense budget got to be less than the state’s “ASSOCIATIONS” budget…

Reminder: France is the only military superpower of the West (ahead of Britain which is greatly a US satellite in defense matters)… And most of these state sponsored French associations were busy propagandizing against or insulting European civilization, or replacing basic functions of the state which was in full retreat as far as taking care of France or Europe… (That latter mission being fundamental to the European plutocrats who, anxious about a possible revolution, want We The People to be preoccupied by basic survival instead of the revolution they richly deserve…)

ORIGINAL EUROPEAN CRIME: NOT DEFENDING RUS’ AGAINST THE EASTERN TYRANT:

Europeans are now revisiting their own history: the Holodomor, when Stalin killed 6 million Ukrainians, showing the way to his ally Hitler.

One must go even deeper. Anna of Kyiv, the Princess of Kyiv, became a very important queen of France: not only her descendants ruled France, but she ruled herself for quite a while. She, who spoke many languages, heaped contempt of the brutal and uneducated nature of her subjects, the Franks: they durably improved after that.

However, when the Mongols invaded, Europe did not try to come, even symbolically, to the rescue of Ukrainian Rus’ attacked by the Mongols in the Thirteenth Century. Europeans have excuses: they may just have been surprised.

This is the root of the problem, because the Kremlin greatly evolved, at least for the first two centuries of its existence, as a collaborator of the Golden Horde, before eating the creature which had allowed it to grow (by making Moscow the tax collector of the Golden Horde). .

In comparison, pan-European armies defended Poland and Hungary against the Golden Horde: the Mongols won, but with losses so heavy, they had to give up the conquest of Europe: the Mongol generals debated remembering what happened to their ancestors the Huns in France, eight centuries earlier. So it is understandable that the Russians thereafter felt different and evolved differently since, after all, they had to learn to fend for themselves without help from the rest of Europe. Russians became highly effective at that and ended conquering their conquerors using some of the methods they had been taught such clearing all the forests, genocidizing the opposition, etc. (such methods were used in particular when conquering the northern Caucasus).

Now we are another eight centuries further, and it’s high time to stamp out the malevolent mentality which started with Alexander Nevsky mix of sainthood and treachery to civilization (the Mongols made Nevski “Prince of Kyiv”… Earlier he had been kicked out of the Novgorod republic because of his tyrannical aspirations…)

In any case, the error of 1240 CE was not renewed in 2022: this time, Europe came to the rescue of Ukraine when the tyrant from the east invaded. (Putin’s slanted mind has been too much inspired by

No more betrayal of Ukraine, then!

CORRECT HISTORY OF WORLD WAR ONE INCEPTION:

One reason for the Ukraine war has been the lack of correct analysis in the cause of World War One, which is widely viewed as an accident. It was no accident, but a confrontation between the tyrannical-plutocratic mode of governance and ORD, the Oligarchic Representative Democracies (namely France and Britain, also now the major opponents of Putin since 2022).

Indeed, World War One was a plot. A Kaiserreich plot, conspiracy, and an ambush. Because that was not revealed, let alone taught, contemporaries could claim to be surprised by Putin’s ways and motivations, which, actually, were very similar to those of the German High Command before World War One..The Kaiserreich, literally “Caesarkingdom” had been created in Versailles in 1871. Small world.

Many history textbooks insist that Europe was a powderkeg in 1914, and that the status of Europe as a powderkeg explains the accidental explosion of the whole European civilization. A spark, and then boom.

This is a misreading of history: Indeed, the attack of Germany on the world, on August 1, 1914, was a carefully planned conspiracy, plot and choreography written by generalissimo Von Molkte, mostly… And it took ALL other European powers, including Austro-Hungary, by complete surprise. Germany had been looking for a pretext to attack and mobilized secretly.

European democracies (Belgium, France, Britain) and European democratizing Russia were coldbloodedly assaulted in 1914 by a Kaiserreich which had planned for war. The Sarajevo assassination played a role, true, but not so much as described by said textbooks and used by fascist propaganda.

In truth the slain Arciduke, heir to the throne of Austro Hungary, was a very strong supporter of peace… And his best friend was the Kaiser!

It is likely that, had the Archduke lived, he would have prevented the Kaiser, whose best friend was the Archduke, to go to war.

The Kaiserreich’s military command, which was Prussian, had hoped to destroy France in a month (Schlieffen plan).

The Kaiser had agreed on December 8, 1912, in an “IMPERIAL WAR COUNCIL” to engage in a surprise, preventive attack on France, complete with war with Britain. Historians like Fritz Fischer, John C. G. Röhl and Pierre Renouvin consider the secret meeting of the half dozen top military men in the Kaiserreich, as the decisive step towards war. It was decided in particular to tell the newspaper to forge the appropriate public opinion. That sort of telerobotics could not have happened in a democracy like Britain or France.

After the destruction of the French Republic, its ally, Russia would be dealt with. Britain which had no army (basically) would then be made an offer it could not refuse. That was the plan. However, the Kaiser was the grandson of Queen Victoria, and it was not clear that he would really engage in that carefully prepared world war.

The Prussian-German general officers knew full well that if their surprise drive through Belgium and France with a two million man army failed, the immense resources of the allies, with their enormous empires, which included India, Canada, most of Africa, were bound to slowly strangle the Kaiserreich… Somewhat as Russia is slowly strangled now… Except that Russia, a continent sized empire has everything, and can’t be blockaded in the matter of goods… Whereas the Kaiserreich could be.

    ***

Putin Tried To Be More Careful Than The Kaiser And Kill Ukraine By Slowly Rising The Temp:

The Kaiser went into an all-out world attack on August 1, 1914, taking France and Britain by complete surprise (the French under secretary of agriculture was the highest government official in Paris, and ordered the general mobilization. Also the Germans invaded France on the second of August, then they declared war on France the next day…).

Perhaps aware of the foolhardiness of the Kaiser, Putin approached his invasion of Ukraine methodically, increasing the temperature step by step over twenty years. Putin was very careful. But as he pointed out aloud in 2014: “the Europeans have not given me a reason to not be in Kiev in two weeks.” Indeed. And actually, although the French decided finally not to provide Putin with aircraft carriers they had built for him, and stop the delivery of attack helicopters used by Russian special forces, they kept selling him irreplaceable electronics and optronics.

Finally, thoroughly put to sleep by Europe’s two decades of supine behavior, Putin went all out. it

PUTIN IS FAILING IN A WAY VERY REMINISCENT OF THE KAISER IN 1914:

However Putin had overlooked the fact that, differently from Obama, Trump armed Ukraine, and Biden followed Trump’s lead. Europeans, from Turkey and its drones, and Britain with its anti-tank missiles (made by MBDA, a Franco-European missile maker) also armed Ukraine and Ukraine fought back with 2022 weapons, a massive armored assault from the Cold War. Real time US intelligence sent elite Russian commandos to their deaths by the thousands…

So Putin’s long risk adverse strategy ended at Kyiv somewhat like the Kaiser besides Paris…  ..

Intuitively, the defensive war of Ukraine and her allies is basically won, thanks to Ukraine’s intelligence and will to live free, and those numerous democratic allies, all the way to Australia. In a way the situation is like World War One. Granted, Russia is a much larger empire than the Kaiserreich, and fully self-sufficient in everything but precisely for what Putin seems short of, and has been pounding on… Brains! I met plenty of highly educated Russians in California, singing the praises of Putin and spitting venom at Ukraine… But those Putin loving Russians were in California, not Moscow, advancing Western high tech, and thus served Ukraine, whether they perceived it or not….

Putin is finished because his early, full out drive on Kyiv failed, ,just as the Kaiser was finished, because his drive on Paris with nearly all of his army, failed…After 5 weeks, when the German armies had to frantically fall back, lest they be encircled and cut off by the French and their taxis (First Battle of the Marne, September 1914)…

However, Putin has an extremely fateful possibility which the Kaiser did not have: Putin could go nuclear and use some of the 2000 tactical nuclear weapons he has (the USA has very few, less than 100, and France refuses to use its own; so Putin may be tempted…)  .

Indeed Putin may use nukes, because he is the lowest of the low, in the following exact sense: Putin is the first tyrant ever to suggest annihilating all of humanity if he did not get his way. According to a biography of Biden, the Pentagon begged the Ukrainian military to let go of an encircled Russian army in Kherson, because Putin’s servants had signified to their US colleagues that they were going to use nukes…

So, in a way PUTIN HAS ALREADY USED NUKES.

More of this in the conclusion. The preceding essay is hard on Russia and Germany… But all European nations have their dark sides. Those who are considered to think more and deeper are to be criticized more deeply. Of course the leading place in Europe has been its center which turns out to be France, geographically and historically. The following is to be meditated

    ***

LOUIS XIV Of FRANCE BRUTALIZED EUROPEAN SOCIETY FOR CENTURIES TO COME:

The Edict of Fontainebleau (1685), issued by Louis XIV, revoked the Edict of Nantes (1598). This act outlawed Protestantism in France, leading to the destruction of Huguenot churches, the closure of Protestant schools, and the mass exodus of Huguenots.

The Huguenot population in France reached its peak in the late 16th century, just before the Wars of Religion (1562–1598) started by the Catholic fanatic Catherine de Medici, who was the wealthy heir of the tyrant of Florence, and ex banker.. At that time, estimates suggest there were approximately 1.5 to 2 million Huguenots—roughly 10% of France’s total population of around 16–18 million. After that France blow, the second one was under Louis XIV, arguably a Spaniard (his mother spoke Spanish as mother tongue and boasted of the fact that France was not a republic…). Louis expelled another 5% of the population of France. Many were received wonderfully in Prussia which was anxious to boost its population, especially with the most gifted of the French…

Their descendants  would drive back into France perched on tanks.

Louis and Catherine were traitors to civilization. As that wonderful imbecile of Louis XIV laid dying devoured over weeks by gangrene, his fanatical Catholic wife having already fled the palace, Louis said that what hurt him most was the suffering of his people. Well, he had been the main cause by organizing a Protestant genocide in France, which helped to install relentless wars….

Civilizations can weaken themselves centuries before catastrophe arrives by generating moods they don’t control while they keep growing.

The Catholic fanatics Catherine and Louis, by making France intolerant, 11 and 12 centuries after Clovis made France -by making France tolerant to all reasonable religions- generated an anti-civilization mood which spawned, ultimately, the racist mood which came to haunt Germany in the late Nineteenth Century, bringing various atrocities, such as the genocide in Namibia, or in World War One (neither the Senegalese nor the Germans made each other prisoners, the hate was mutual…) and then the massacres perpetrated by Stalin (similar in spirit to Louis, who sent Dragons to Protestant families) and then of course Hitler.

    ***

WHAT MOTIVATES TRAITORS TO CIVILIZATION? WILL TO SELF IMPORTANCE, POWER, MONEY:

Many individuals want to feel glorious at some point, to forget about the rest, and free their animals’ spirits, so if being vile and despicable is all that’s left as behavioral opportunities, doing what was not done before, why not indulge that way?

Also vile and despicable acts are often available for career moves, as most people are leery of indulging in the Dark Side, and thus tend to avoid acting vile and despicable.

Hence to become famous at the cost of becoming notorious, spectacular traitors to civilization are always ready to sprout.

Betrayal often stems from the desire for significance, status, or advancement echoes themes found in political psychology and history.

We must mow that lawn, as the alternative can be one hundred million killed as in WW2 (5% of humanity) In WW1 Lord Bertrand Russel’s antiwar pacifist writings, that is, his de facto advocacy for the Kaiser, earned him six months in prison, to calm his ardor .

Russell’s selfish class imbecility and non factual reasoning was that statesmen across Europe failed catastrophically to prevent escalation. But actually there has been no escalation: the German dictatorship known as the Kaiserreich had planned an attack as early as December 1912…In late July 1914, all that Britain was fretting about was Ireland, and the entire French government was on vacation. Meanwhile, Germany was secretly mobilizing as secretly as possible. After the Prussian attack, Austro-Hungary refused to join in the war, and resisted Berlin until August 6, 1914… .

There is  plenty of evidence that Putin planned to eradicate Ukraine all along. When he thought he had the USA of Obama and the Europeans in his pocket, he struck. However, in the end, the Western Europeans started to remember they helped develop the Donbas, more than a century ago…

    So here we are:

    ***

Civilizations are threatened not only by external enemies but by internal collaborators who undermine resistance. The present situation is extreme: civilization is one, Russia and China, or Iran, North Korea and whatever power which is not democratic enough are traitors… To civilization. Societies which, like Russia, authorize tyrants who threaten humanity with extinction can’t be allowed.

To protect civilization one has to indulge into CATASTROPHIC, APOCALYPTIC THINKING: imagine everything going wrong (because if anything can go wrong it will… Murphy’s law). So yes, oceans may rise thirty meters. And yes, Putin may realize that, if he goes nuclear, the USA and Europe are not ready in any sense… Thus it would be tempting, for a cornered Putin, to indulge into using a few dozens of his nukes. Of course, I am not the first one to think of this. That revelation may explain the blundering support-opposition of both Europe and the USA regarding Putin: strategic thinkers may think that the best way to deal with poisonous dart frog Putin is to boil him so slowly he can’t really be sure, with his primitive brain, about what is going on…

External aggression succeeds when internal betrayal weakens civilizations from within… But that betrayal can come in many ways. Internal brutalization is one of them.

For nearly two centuries after France abolished slavery, the colonial-era law that classified humans as property has remained quietly on the books. On Thursday, the lower house of parliament voted 254-0 to adopt a bill repealing Code Noir, or Black Code—the 1685 decree King Louis XIV signed to govern slaves across France's colonies. The law turned human beings into "movable property," allowing them to be worked, beaten, sold, raped, and murdered.

  18. washingtonpost.com/politics/20. This is appalling. #Trump may SAY he is not a King - but he is ACTING like one, & not just any kind of King, but an absolute Monarch, with absolute power, like #LouisXIV of #France, @Nonilex. Will the #Republican super-majority on the #SCOTUS ever get round to realising that they, like Viktor #Frankenstein, have created a #monster with their #presidential #immunity ruling?

On this day in 1715, Louis XIV died after 72 years on the throne.

His son wouldn’t last a decade.
    His grandson’s wife? Marie Antoinette.
His legacy? Absolute monarchy—baked in Versailles gold and served with guillotines on the side.

_Combining visual and textual analysis, this article suggests that royal image makers linked Muslims and Protestants to defend the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes and manifest the French king's religious zeal and imperial ambition while distracting from the ahdname (capitulations) granted by the Ottoman sultan that precluded France from joining a Catholic alliance to fight the “Turkish menace.”_
