  2. If your fav NBA team needs a durable iso shooter who is closer to 40 years of age than 30, today's your lucky day! Well, unless you're part of your fav NBA team's operation, probably not literally. You might not even care for sports. Right. I'll close the door after me.

  3. A quotation from Twain

The question as to whether there is such a thing as divine right of kings is not settled in this book. It was found too difficult. That the executive head of a nation should be a person of lofty character and extraordinary ability, was manifest and indisputable; that none but the Deity could select that head unerringly, was also manifest and indisputable; that the Deity ought to make that selection, then, was likewise manifest and indisputable; consequently, that He does make it, as claimed, was an unavoidable deduction. I mean, until the author of this book encountered the Pompadour, and Lady Castlemaine, and some other executive heads of that kind; these were found so difficult to work into the scheme, that it was judged better to take the other tack in this book (which must be issued this fall), and then go into training and settle the question in another book. It is, of course, a thing which ought to be settled, and I am not going to have anything particular to do next winter anyway.

Mark Twain (1835-1910) American writer [pseud. of Samuel Clemens]
Novel (1889), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Preface

  4. Merkabah: 850 BC

Up for adoption: a game ruleset that I had a lot of fun designing last summer, inspired by Sam Sorensen’s Cataphract.

In 850 BC,* war is beginning. King Ahab ben Omri’s fatal injury beneath the walls of Ramoth and the sudden demise of his eldest son and successor have left the kingdom of Israel reeling. The foes of the House of Omri rise up on all sides. To the north, Aramean chariots thunder forth from Damascus. To the south, the House of David questions the wisdom of its alliance with Israel, sealed with the crown prince and coregent’s marriage to Ahab’s daughter. By the seashore, the Philistine city-states debate which of their Hebrew neighbours is most ripe for attack. And across the Jordan, King Mesha has risen in rebellion against the Omrides’ oppression of Moab, awakening dreams of independence and reconquest among his peers in Edom and Ammon. The prophesied end of the line of Ahab, so it appears, is nigh.

In Merkabah, players command Iron Age armies as they pursue their faction’s unique military and religious objectives. Realistically simulated logistical and time constraints push faction leaders to divide their forces and delegate: whenever an army splits off, a new player takes control of the detached force. Information only travels as fast as scouts and messengers can carry it, forcing players to operate with limited and outdated knowledge of the battlefield. Wandering prophets and cryptic oracles may help bridge the gap—if the jealous gods so please.

    * Actually 852 BC; 850 just sounds catchier.

I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll basically never have time to run this, nor, probably, to fully finish it. So I’m putting it out there for anyone to use as they please (CC-BY): finish the ruleset and see if it’s playable, turn it into a boardgame, vibe code a video game, use the map for a hex crawler—anything (just let me know if you do, I would be stoked)! Here are the files:

I think I worked most of the inconsistencies out of the rules, but no guarantees. If you want to try and run the game as it stands, some key missing components are maps of individual regions and little intro texts to send the starting commanders informing them of their roles, factions, known objectives and so forth. So, I say again: if anyone wants to do anything with this, awesome!!!, and good luck.

  5. Coming soon(ish): how a simple statement of supposed truth in various books leads to weeks of primary source research - with interesting outcomes!

  6. #MythologyMonday let's talk about King Lycaon...

King Lycaon had 50 sons. He killed one of his sons & fed him to Zeus (because... idk something about wanting to test Zeus's omniscience... or something?)

Zeus was so upset (which is sort of rich coming from this guy), he turned King Lycaon into a wolf.

  7. Taking it back….

    The archives remember kings
    because kings built the archives

    our names survived in fragments
stitched into the hems of uniforms
    pressed into recipe books
buried inside letters no historian thought to unfold carefully

    they called us muses
    wives
    witches
    madwomen
    assistants

    anything but architects

for centuries they edited us down
    cut us from photographs
quoted our work without saying our names
    turned our bodies into evidence
    our anger into diagnosis
    our exhaustion into character flaws

    they built entire institutions
    out of the belief
that we would stay grateful for the corners

    but something is changing now

you can feel it in the classrooms
    in the courtrooms
in group chats that turn into movements before dawn
in daughters who no longer apologise before speaking
    in women comparing notes
and suddenly realising the pain was never personal

    we are recovering each other
    like lost cities beneath water

    there is fury in it
    but also tenderness

the kind born when someone says
I thought I was alone in this

    and another voice answers
    you were never alone
they just worked very hard to keep us separate

now the old language is cracking

the words that kept us small
    hysterical
    difficult
    too emotional
    too ambitious
    too loud

    they no longer fit properly

    we are outgrowing them

there are women alive right now
learning to take up space without apology
    without shrinking their brilliance
without softening their edges into something more acceptable

women rebuilding themselves from the historical record outward

women who understand that survival was never the final goal

we did not endure centuries merely to remain decorative

    we are returning to ourselves

    not quietly
    not perfectly
    not all at once

    but together

    and that changes everything
