  1. @thatgalsilver @alice Maybe they thought XChat was discontinued in 2013 in favor of HexChat, which was itself discontinued in 2024, and that was enough to deem the name no longer in "use in commerce" for the purposes of trademark law.

  3. #zoitechat, which is #hexchat but better, is an option:

I switched a few weeks ago
    There has been no woe
So, zoitechat is the way to go
It's hexchat, but for gtk three
    Accordingly, switch and say whee
You can use The Lounge too
Use both and let fun ensue

  4. @RTP I LOVE #hexchat. It was my goto #IRC client for years. The maintainer abandoned it in Feb of 2024. See - hexchat.github.io/news/2.16.2.

I jumped to #TheLounge because it behaves well on mobile and desktop and maintains connection when I'm not actually using it because I selfhost it 24x7.

  9. @RTP Don't use #HexChat #XChat or #BitchX. They haven't been developed in years, possibly decades. They are prone to application and security issues. I'm not saying don't use #IRC. Just don't use those clients. Since I #selfhost , I use #TheLounge for my #IRCClient.

  16. Since #HexChat was mothballed in Feb 2024 I figured it was about time to look for forks or replacements that are still maintained. Anyone still using #IRC and can recommend projects with similar capabilities or better than HexChat?

  17. I've spent much of my time since Spring 2012 in #IRC. It's where I met some of my most important associates. However, I've largely kept to my own network, CoderNet, since mid-2017.

FWIW: I was involved as a bystander in the self-destruction of #Freenode and I haven't gone back to either of the offshoots since then.

I do spend some time in EdgyNet, the gamedev network that is run by Edgy McEdge aka Stella Valkyrie. I've known Edgy for about 8 years and I try to offer support.

I used to run an active 60-person channel in Freenode. Things change. These days, there is very little random discussion in my network or EdgyNet. However, IRC in general remains the go-to for simple, lightweight, and secure text chat [ provided that secure mode is used ].

In IRC, there is no corporation that believes it owns you, that focuses on selling flashy add-ons, and that relays everything which is said to other corporations and to the government.

The protocol is super-light. High-school students used to revel in making their very own IRC bots. It's also easy to add IRC support to game worlds and to keep an eye on the worlds that way.

One IRC issue is that a bouncer is helpful. Enter "bip". I run a tweaked "bip" setup and it works fine. For people who want a web gateway, I run TheLounge.

The remaining part is the question of the IRC client. For Linux and Windows, there's #HexChat, irssi, and weechat. Or just a web browser if an IRC network includes TheLounge. For Android, there's Revolution IRC. I don't have an iOS device, so I can't comment on that.

In short, IRC is great. If you'd like to talk to me in real-time, my network is presently:

    Network name: CoderNet
    IRC host: irc.oldcoder.org
    IRC classic port: 6667
    IRC secure port: 6697
    Web gateway: irc.minetest.org

It isn't essential to join a channel, but if you make it into the network, try:
    /join #ventures

    To ping me, try:
    /msg OldCoder Hello

I'm online 24 hours, some days, subtracting intermittent sleep, errands, or trips to different cities. The errands typically take two hours and the trips typically take a full day.

  23. Is this really the end of HexChat?

    "Developers All Hands On Deck"

There are not that many irc clients, although the Protocol for real-time Internet chat and messaging is extremely popular in the free open software community and there are an infinite number of users and developers on all kinds of topics exchanged in the channels.

What a great and moving moment it was, after which the freenode server was corrupted by the selfishness of one person and the "former" staff not only issued a warning, but also libera.chat was founded! In no time at all, all channels of the free software scene migrated from freenode to Libera.chat, a few, such as #kali-linux, migrated to the oftc or others, but then let themselves be represented via channel bots on libera.chat to keep the connection.. And it was kept! And the connections are still in place!
From my point of view, this great movement is the most beautiful example of unity among the free-thinking FOSS, FLOSS, FSF people ever!

Internet Relay Chat protocol is more alive than ever and that's why projects like Hexchat can't die!

The alternatives I can think of would be Weechat and irssi (commandline).

Or ChatZilla in the browser (Seamonkey).. unfortunately, I personally can't think of many more possibilities right now.

  26. I've started using #halloy to do some IRC chatting on windows, works like a charm, good replacement for #HexChat, that got deprecated a while back
    halloy.squidowl.org/

  27. Successfully switched to #WeeChat from #HexChat.

A few months ago, HexChat (a fork of #XChat) announced its final release, an end of an era for the XChat/HexChat family that rivaled #pIRCh and #mIRC.

It's the era of WeeChat today!

    #IRC #Chat

  28. So #Hexchat has this weird issue; at least on my #Debian system, where navigating user interface windows will make it randomly just crash and spit out an "X window" error. #Quassel seems to work pretty good though, and looks very similar to the Hexchat layout, so I'll probably stick with it.

  29. Клеман Лефевр, создатель Linux Mint

  32. Going back to Konversation for GUI stuffs. DCC file send/receive is kinda important to me. For everything else, including a lot of Matrix usage, WeeChat is still the Kewlist :p

https://bugs.quassel-irc.org/projects/quassel-irc/wiki/Migrating_from_Monolithic_to_Client+Core - just ain't gonna cut it right now.

    I still love HexChat.

Honorable mention goes to Halloy, which I think looks really good, supports tiling, and says it supports DCC Send - I don't mind manipulating config files by hand, and I might check it out with a FlatPak, but if I'm sufficiently impressed it looks like I'll have to build the .deb and SlackBuild myself, ... Well? Somebody's got to! Right?

    .

  33. @cadey And a much more full featured client in #hexchat.

  34. @hammerron @cadey I'll use #hexchat until a supported fork comes along or a security flaw is found. I've been using X-chat and it's successor, Hexchat, for decades.

  35. @wyatt8740 As a replacement for Slack and Discord, #IRC is hard because most major networks neglect to provide for 1. history, 2. attachment hosting (DCC doesn't work behind #CGNAT), and 3. link summary bots. Also now that #HexChat is discontinued, what's its replacement?

  36. @cadey On a note regarding Hexchat. I understand that Hexchat had its last release last month. I wonder what people would use in it place.
