I've been transitioning my home computers from #Manjaro to #Solus #Linux because I noticed that Solus puts out weekly updates and Manjaro moves far more slowly.

So you've got a padlock icon in Element. Your messages are encrypted. You're basically a spy now, right?
Not quite, friend.
There are two things going on in E2EE, and most people only ever learn about one of them. Today I learned the hard way — and now you don't have to.
🔒 Encryption scrambles your messages into gibberish that only the right keys can unlock. Happens automatically. The padlock is always on. Beautiful. Revolutionary. Table stakes.
🛡️ Verification is the part the cypherpunks actually care about.
Encryption secures the channel. Verification confirms who's actually holding the keys at the other end. Skip it, and you're encrypting to keys that merely claim to belong to your contact. Most of the time? Fine. But a compromised homeserver could theoretically slide a fake key into the exchange and silently hoover up everything you thought was for their eyes only.
That's not paranoia. That's the threat model.
The fix? Emoji. I'm not even joking. Matrix generates a set of emoji from a shared cryptographic value and shows them to both users simultaneously. If you both see the same little parade of cartoon faces — the handshake is mathematically genuine. No interception possible. It takes 30 seconds and feels absolutely ridiculous right up until you realise it's the same cryptographic ceremony Signal uses for Safety Numbers and iMessage uses for Contact Key Verification.
The best part? Do it once per contact. Matrix cross-signing cascades the verification across all your devices automatically. One emoji parade to rule them all.
Padlock = encrypted. Shield = verified. You want both. The cypherpunks demand both. Don't settle for half a revolution. 🔒🛡️

Today, I was able to set again my #matrix instance.

It now uses a #docker container (instead of yunohost) and #synapse (instead of tuwunel).

I also tried the #element client for the first time.

I like it better than fluffychat and I should have access to all its features now that I use synapse.

From now on, I will try to prioritise matrix over #discord

Tomorrow, I'll try setting a #flohmarkt instance.

What I’ve noticed is that many people are afraid of what they don’t know and therefore don’t dare to make the switch (completely).
(Some people just don’t give a damn and convenience is all that matters)

Any fear is unfounded, and if all of us switches en masse, Big Tech’s power will be quickly broken, and the development of alternatives will proceed much more smoothly and quickly.

Ik vergeet er vast nog een paar, maar er is voor elke Amerikaanse en Closed Source toepassing wel een Europees en Open Source alternatief.

Wat ik merk is dat veel mensen bang zijn voor dat wat ze niet kennen en daarom niet (geheel) durven over te stappen.
(sommigen interesseerd het gewoon geen reet en is gemak het enige dat telt)

Eventuele angst is ongegrond en als we met heel Europa massaal overstappen is de macht van Big Tec snel gebroken en verloopt de ontwikkeling van alternatieven veel soepeler en sneller.

Before I stopped using it, I told everyone to leave my discord channel because of mental issues. That shit made me feel even more lonely than not using it cos nobody talks to me.

I've always had this trouble with IM's. I guess I'm not very interesting. Now with that age verification crap, I'm not using that thing anymore.

I really hope Discord fucking burns to the ground. Apart from 100% of people using that crap, that place's full of really messed up weirdos and child exploiters, same with Roblox

I did have Matrix back in 2022 but nobody talked to me with that thing so I got rid of it and last time I used Discord was back in December 2025.

🚨 Gli hacker russi prendono di mira gli account Signal e WhatsApp di funzionari e militari.

I servizi segreti olandesi ( #MIVD & #AIVD ) confermano una campagna su larga scala tramite falsi bot di supporto per rubare codici di verifica.

Tre considerazioni:
1️⃣ È bizzarro che politici e alti comandi usino app commerciali USA (WhatsApp/Signal su server AWS/Google) invece di un sistema chiuso e governativo. Assurdo
2️⃣ Mi fa piacere che alternative europee sicure come Session, Delta Chat o Element/Matrix siano escluse da questo disastro.
3️⃣ Si parla di "sovranità" ma si ignorano queste soluzioni, continuando a usare app americane hackerabili dai russi. Questa è la nostra Europa

I don't know why the newer version of Element on Android is called as Element X. Perhaps it is intentional to have the session on setting call it as "Element X Android", like some sort of crossover from both Element and Android.
