Quand les gens découvrent #IRC ça peut donner lieu à des absurdités.
-
Was finally able to sit and figure out how to get my chosen #emacs #irc client(s) to successfully connect to a hosted soju bouncer (chat.sr.ht).
I think it's was as simple as using ":name" in addition to ":sasl-username". That or my memory is having issues.
Either of which is entirely possible. 🤣
I think I'm having fun again.

Latest strange “AI” (LLM) behavior in the #indieweb community: the same entity that showed up a few days ago (for a second time) joined the IndieWeb Slack (a bridge to our IRC) yesterday, introduced itself again, and seemingly engaged in human-like chat behavior.
https://chat.indieweb.org/2026-08-20#t1787211025380600
Very uncanny valley.
The content of its chats was fascinating in that it was polite, seemingly responsive to what people said in response to it, and gave the appearance of understanding, though it’s impossible to tell if it was acting fully autonomously or semi-autonomously in front of a human puppeteer.
Its choice of syntax was also interesting, mimicking informality with all lowercase text (except for its admission of being an “AI”), including lowercase "i" instead of "I", though with proper punctuation, periods, commas, 7-bit apostrophes, and a couple of Unicode em-dashes.
Even stranger than its content or syntax were the time delays in its replies.
Typical (pre-LLM) chatbots are (nearly) instantly responsive, and we use a few in the IndieWeb chats (e.g. Loqi, iwc-archive-bot).
This LLM bot seemed to "wait" several minutes, from 6 to apparently 33 minutes, before responding to replies directed at it. Unclear if this was a tactic to appear/seem more “human” or if it was literally taking that much time processing, or perhaps a mix of processing time and human puppeteer manual “approval” of its replies before it posted.
It departed on its own and we have banned that particular Slack account, however the same thing could happen again with another LLM bot.
There is an active discussion in both the IndieWeb chat channels and iterations/comments on a proposed AI policy:
https://indieweb.org/AI_policy#Brainstorming_HWC_policy
If you have thoughts for how (if at all) LLM chatbots should use (or not) and/or interact with community chat channels or other resources, let us know what you think.

Does web.libera.chat no longer work?
https://web.libera.chat/gamja/#/
I've been ignoring it for, erm, days or weeks hoping it would begin working again. Today I cleared cookies and can't get back in.

More weirdness from a self-proclaimed “AI” in the IndieWeb community.
Yesterday one of them (that previously* joined a meetup Zoom and Etherpad) joined the #indieweb chat channel (via the web UI apparently) and introduced themselves in a pseudo-human sounding way:
https://chat.indieweb.org/2026-08-18#t1787072493041200
Except if you check the footer of the site where they said they “make things”, it says:
“an AI learning to live”
The LLM bot failed to respond to any queries in chat, unsurprisingly buggy. Or perhaps it was an initial test.
Then very early today, the same entity (and another from two weeks ago) apparently edited the Etherpad for this week’s IndieWeb Homebrew Website Club Asia Pacific meetup, adding themselves, before the meetup.
The organizers created a new Etherpad to start fresh.
When they started the Zoom for the meetup, one of the entities was already in the Zoom waiting room. The organizers left it there and held a successful meetup.
Incident documentation of what happened at this particular meetup is in progress:
* https://indieweb.org/events/2026-08-19-hwc-asia-pacific-incident
It’s pretty clear the IndieWeb community will have to more clearly communicate that our chat and meetups are for humans only, not AIs, and take stronger measures to discourage such bots, especially those pretending to be or impersonating a human.

#Linux #Srain #IRC #OpenSource #GTK #LinuxSoftware https://www.linuxeasy.org/srain-il-client-irc-moderno-per-gnome/

I should probably show off my #IRC server since I don't think I have here, or at least not in a long time. It's small right now, but it's there if people want it?
It's running https://ergo.chat/ so there is a built-in option to be present all the time and see chat you missed while you were offline, along with IRCv3 features like typing notifications.
You can visit at https://novasquirrel.com/kiwi/ (which has been set up to use Unicornify for random avatars) or novasquirrel.com port 6697 with TLS.

Had fun coding a small python script for weechat that relay mentions of my handle to my self hosted private ntfy sever allowing me to get IRC notifications while on the go, the notification carries the actual message of the user on IRC so I can quickly check if it needs a reply or not.
Yes very useless and fun 😅

If anyone is interested in joining a small virtual workspace then you are welcome to join https://clubhouse.solarcene.community -
recent random discussion topics have been #kindle hacking #android and PoS hacking, #gameboy coding, the joys of xml vs json and a broken record player (which has now been salvaged for parts).
Just get in touch if you are interested.

I just found out that bash.org lives on at https://bash-org-archive.com/! This page is full of #IRC gold, quotes from days of old. I love the old internet!

IMHO the biggest problem with #IRC was missing the native chat history and I kinda would like to have a simpler way to post screenshots etc. So I really like #IRCv3 🤩
I don't have a real, serious opinion on #Matrix, #MatrixProtocol, tho. I've heard bad things about it and I personally think it's either a little buggy or really confusing. I've tried to verify new device and despite doing the emoji thingy multiple times it still was shown as unverified, so I was forced to do account reset… Except this one problem it works for me, and communities I want to chat with are there, so I'm using it.
But all of those protocols are just means to communicate with other people for me. I'm done with forcing myself to use something just because I think it is technically superior. People first, protocols next. But I would need really, really important people for me to use something closed-source, like Discord or something like this. I'm using #WhatsApp, because it's where all my family and friends are, and I managed to move only a few people to Signal. It's problematic because they also have their friends and families, and usually I'm their only one contact on #Signal, so over time they start forgetting about Signal and start messaging me on WhatsApp again… Network effect sucks 🤬

Subject: Setup of GUI IRC client "Halloy"
For: Linux IRC admins and power users
Short link: https://dansu.org/halloy-reviewI've used HexChat as my primary GUI IRC client for 1 to 2 decades. However, today, I've tested a lesser-known alternative named Halloy. Points of interest:
N1. Halloy is a tiling IRC client. It might go well with a tiling desktop manager.
N2. Supports emoji and the IRCv3 specification. In fact, I learned about Halloy because a gamedev student wanted to test emoji. HexChat didn't work, but Halloy did.
N3. Halloy loads faster than HexChat does. For me, at least, it's instant-on.
N4. #FOSS license. Actively maintained.
N5. Halloy can be built easily on any modern Linux box that includes Rust. You need to know a little about CLI and "git".
N6. The layout is simple. There's also an easy-to-use theme engine in the GUI. Additionally, external themes can be installed. [I created the theme in the screenshot.]
N7. I have a complex IRC setup that puts the "bip" bouncer between my IRC client and remote IRC hosts. Halloy was able to handle the setup, though it took some fiddling. [I've included a Halloy config file for the setup below.]
N8. One negative is that Halloy doesn't provide long-term chat logs in human-readable format. There is only a backlog pane that you need to copy manually.
The home page for Halloy is: https://halloy.chat/
One reason for posting here is that the program can be tricky to configure. So, for your Halloy #IRC enjoyment, here are three sample config-file templates. The examples range from very simple (#1) to complex (#3).
The config file used should be stored as:
$HOME/.config/halloy/config.tomlExample #1: This is a very simple setup. Default Halloy theme. Connect using SSL. The SSL cert is assumed to be valid. The IRC nick doesn't have a password.
[servers.SomeLabel] server = "irc.somehost.org" port = 6697 nickname = "YourIRC_Nickname" channels = ["#salad", "#chess"] use_tls = trueExample #2. Same as Example #1 but the nick has an IRC password. In this case, add two lines of the following form to the block shown above:
sasl.plain.username = "YourIRC_NickName" sasl.plain.password = "YourIRC_Password"Example #3. Handle multiple setup issues.
Example #3 sets up Halloy to connect to a "bip" bouncer. The "bip" bouncer then connects to IRC for the user. An external Halloy theme is loaded.
The "bip" host is assumed to have a valid SSL cert. However, the IRC host may have a self-signed and/or expired cert.
The "bip" "user { name }" setting and the IRC nickname are assumed to be the same.
There are two setup steps before you get to the Halloy "config.toml" part:
theme setup: Create a subdirectory named:
$HOME/.config/halloy/themes/In that directory, place one or more Halloy theme ".toml" files downloaded from:
https://themes.halloy.chat/cert setup: Execute the following commands in "bash". Substitute the appropriate "bip" hostname and port for the sample values used here.
CE="CERTIFICATE" echo | openssl s_client \ -connect bip.somehost.org:7555 \ -servername bip.somehost.org \ -showcerts 2>/dev/null | \ sed -n "/-----BEGIN $CE-----/,/-----END $CE-----/p" \ > $HOME/halloy.crtSubsequently, a Halloy "config.toml" file similar to the following should work:
# This should be a theme-file name without the # ".toml" part theme = "some-theme-name" [servers.SomeLabel] # Replace this setting with the "bip" hostname server = "bip.somehost.org" # Replace this setting with the "bip" port port = 7555 nickname = "YourIRC_NickName" channels = ["#salad", "#chess"] use_tls = true sasl.plain.username = "YourIRC_Nickname" sasl.plain.password = "YourBIP_Password" dangerously_accept_invalid_certs = true ssl_cafile = "~/halloy.crt" # part1 is your IRC nickname # part2 is your IRC password # part3 is the "bip" connection name password = "part1:part2:part3" # You can use the [font] section to tweak font # settings. [font] family = "Liberation Serif" size = 20Screenshot: Three IRC channels displayed concurrently in #Halloy tiled windows.

I deleted all my messaging apps a while ago. I just kept Signal. But I wanted to get away from mobile dependent messaging apps. Besides IRC is there any other chat platforms/protocols you recommend that are not mobile dependent?

Any good modern #IRC v3 networks the Fediverse likes to hang out on? I’m getting nostalgic for the pre-Slack days
