  1. IMHO the biggest problem with #IRC was missing the native chat history and I kinda would like to have a simpler way to post screenshots etc. So I really like #IRCv3 🤩

I don't have a real, serious opinion on #Matrix, #MatrixProtocol, tho. I've heard bad things about it and I personally think it's either a little buggy or really confusing. I've tried to verify new device and despite doing the emoji thingy multiple times it still was shown as unverified, so I was forced to do account reset… Except this one problem it works for me, and communities I want to chat with are there, so I'm using it.

But all of those protocols are just means to communicate with other people for me. I'm done with forcing myself to use something just because I think it is technically superior. People first, protocols next. But I would need really, really important people for me to use something closed-source, like Discord or something like this. I'm using #WhatsApp, because it's where all my family and friends are, and I managed to move only a few people to Signal. It's problematic because they also have their friends and families, and usually I'm their only one contact on #Signal, so over time they start forgetting about Signal and start messaging me on WhatsApp again… Network effect sucks 🤬

  2. @fallenhitokiri

The cool kids moved from Freenode to Libera Chat a few years back, in case you're looking for people!

    A few channels I'm in: chipass, curl, mediawiki-core, node.js, sr.ht, voxpupuli, wikimedia-operations, wikimedia-sre, wikimedia-tech

  3. Another great release for #Halloy 🙏

Lots of new sidebar improvements, built-in config file editor, password keyring support, and many under-the-hood improvements & fixes!

  4. a bunch of relatively big irc channels on libera got a spam message about girl scouts of the usa (!) looking for, and i quote, "vp of agentic ai innovation" (!?)

however, the #ircv3 channel aka slop general didn't get that message! overall exceptionally poor targeting i'd say

  5. RE: narrativ.es/@janl/116872789106

I was always a LimeChat user and later Colloquy, but a lot of folks are gonna miss Textual!

    """
Textual has been sunset and will no longer receive updates.

    (I use IRCCloud these days.)

  6. I'm starting to think ergo (server) + halloy (desktop) / goguma (mobile) makes a credible alternative to discord for small community textual chat, based on some recent experiences.

At least this combo of IRCv3 servers and clients has a pretty high level of "just works" (not needing a bouncer, handles multiple simultaneous connections from different clients, history/state survives disconnects, basic image attachments / url unfurls / reactions, etc).

    #IRCv3 #Halloy #Goguma

  7. @wyatt Unless I'm missing some recent development, major IRC networks don't appear to offer services that would help IRC replace proprietary chat platforms. These include a bouncer, file drop, and pastebin.

  8. Dear #IRC fans, there's another huge release of #Halloy today! Hit your update buttons to get version 2026.7 🙌

New #IRCv3 support in this release: reply, redact, metadata, websockets, network icons and bot mode!

Lots of great new features and fixes, especially if you're on a server that can support them 😏

    Check out the full changelog:

  9. @dansup I highly encourage and recommend this!

Lots of open source projects are on Libera which has some nice modern #IRCv3 features. But if you run your own ergo server, you can have even more like chathistory (without needing a bouncer!), reacts and replies! And of course if you use the client, Halloy, you'll get quite a nice user experience as well ❤️

  10. И снова о IRCv3: вышел Ergo 2.18.0
    github.com/ergochat/ergo/relea

    #irc #ergo #ircv3 #selfhosted

  11. PSA to y'all #IRC users: the latest release of #Halloy supports more #IRCv3 specs! Including `typing` (now on @liberachat too), and `+draft/react` & `draft/multiline` on servers that support (ergo.chat) them!

It's been very pleasant to use Halloy for IRC, so many nice quality-of-life features 🫶

  14. @peritia I highly recommend the Ergo #IRC server. It fully supports #IRCv3, does not require a bouncer, and is very easy to set up and run.

Weechat and Konversation are excellent clients. I have also heard great things about Halloy. I suggest using a client with good support for IRCv3, so that you can take advantage of all the modern features available.

  15. I'm looking for Irssi users who want to test drive a script which adds IRCv3 typing notifications support.

  16. @peritia If you need to run your own server, #Ergo is an excellent #ircv3 implementation. It is easy to install and administer, it supports advanced features, and it also supports SASL authentication.

Whichever server you run, I highly recommend managing security carefully.

  17. What's a good IRC client for Android? I swear, I used to use a good one back in the day but am not finding it. #irc #ircv3 #chat #android

  18. RE: vt.social/@rogueren/1160660799

LMFAO NEVER MIND HOSTING SUCKS ASS AND NO ONE OFFERS AN EASY SOLUTION

    IT'S ALL MANUAL, FUCK THAT!!!

    DEAD ON ARRIVAL

  19. HOLY SHIT #IRC IS BACK

    github.com/ObsidianIRC/Obsidia

This is a client for #IRCv3 which is moderizing IRC to match features expected from modern chat apps like #Discord

THIS IS WHAT WE NEED. RETURN TO IRC.

  20. OK nerds, what's the best #IRC client on #Linux these days?

I'm interested in both TUI and GUI clients, but they are in separate categories and I will probably use both in different situations.

Do we care about #IRCv3? This seems like a decent overview of clients: ilmarilauhakangas.fi/irc_techn

  21. So today I stumbled across a whiteboard implementation for #IRC I am actually seriously considering adding this in @pidgin 3.0 because we have a bunch of whiteboard code but don't currently have a way to test it.. Thoughts?
