Death Literacy Barbie rides again!
Thank you ACAP Navitas in Sydney for a phenomenal four hours of engaged and curious, switched on Masters of Psychology class. Part of the life stages unit, I taught older adults, death literacy, meaning-making, advance planning, icebreaker conversation starters, and grief. We got through a LOT in four hours!
Big fun, cannot wait to come back.

Did you know that - despite myths and assertions to the contrary - you can have your organ donation wishes made reality when you undertake VAD.
Obviously there are some exceptions, especially for cancer-related deaths, but neurological conditions are not excluded.
Five countries - Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada and Australia - have legislation in place for VAD and organ donation to take place. Victoria Australia has already contributed to the global statistics on VAD + organ donation.
I'm here to support you with information, advocacy and practical planning needs if you have questions. Let's talk.

My day today was huge. Week 17 update:
Mum and her dog Byron were interred together, then I watched my younger sister farewell our brother's remains accompanied by giant southern pelicans at Picnic Point near The Entrance.
At my mother's interment the first thing after the acknowledgement of Country was Chubby Checker's "The Twist" on my Bluetooth speaker. We danced the dance that mum loved and was brilliant at until she was quite an older adult.
My older sister had taken pictures of mum about thirty years ago, printed them out and we looked through them as we took turns filling in the interment hole then sprinkling rose petals at the end.

Update on why advance planning is so incredibly important. It took a month to get our brother's body released for cremation because he had no planning in place. He was finally cremated earlier today.

Did you know that in addition to working as an end of life consultant and doula I am a specialist grief therapist who uses evidence-based EFT for grief of all kinds? Yup, and I have been a grief practitioner for over 3 decades now - I wish that I had known about EFT when I started working because it is a genuine game changer in terms of processing grief, turning down the emotional volume of our grief, and supporting people with all they experience.
Want to know more? Sign up for the free 24 Hours of Tapping event where you will hear me talk about tapping for grief at 12:30pm Saturday the 15 July.
Register here: http://24hoursoftapping.com/
There are so many incredible expert practitioners speaking as part of this event, including Australasia's most prolific and high-profile tapping teacher and researcher Peta Stapleton of Bond University on the Gold Coast Queensland. See you Saturday!

CW: Strong language, grief, CSA
The hits keep coming, and Annetta is tired...
The Story So Far:
* Mum died six weeks ago, my chest feels right and funny a lot of the time, I'm sleeping in every day, but I'm beginning to make jokes: "Then my mum died unexpectedly. Rude!!" This makes sense if you ever saw us together. We enjoyed gallows humour and the Golden Girls, it was a consistently good aspect of our relationship. Even with the laughing memories, grief at this stage is exhausting.
* Realities of executorship are sinking in - and while I don't resent the job, or want to wriggle out of it, there are times when it's deeply emotional and tough for me. This can be exhausting.
* The man who sexually assaulted me and several other female children is currently in Long Bay, but coming up for parole in November, and the lovely support person gave me a call yesterday as I have the right to a submission (which includes exclusion zones). This is also depleting the few resources I can call on at this time.
Even with decades of therapy, hard work and determination I am so tired of having to deal with painful stuff from the past.
Ultimately this is grief at the pointy end - grief is never in isolation. There's always other stuff demanding our time and attention while we sit and sift through our sorrows, memories and realisations.
If life calls and asks for me over the next few weeks please tell it I'm out and won't be back until next month. Ta.

VAD fosters compassion, community, communication, and better end of life and death outcomes.
Don't believe the religious hysterical hype - VAD is opt-in and offers genuine choice for those who meet the criteria.
Advocacy and support from non-medical workers - like end of life doulas - can make the process even smoother for everyone involved. Got questions? I'm here to help.

Palliative care maintaining a determined "pain meds are enough at end of life" stance (they often aren't) and religious organisations and their representatives insisting that a 'Special Sky Daddy and a book of magic' merit overturning an individual's choice, dignity and agency for VAD is unforgivable.
Assisted dying legislation must empower individuals, not corporate interests (religious and care-home based).
Read about some avoidable and horrible outcomes in VIC here, with caution. https://www.smh.com.au/national/institutional-objection-to-euthanasia-laws-cause-emotional-suffering-for-dying-20230329-p5cwdi.html

I've been quiet and patchy on social media for a while now - partly because of ongoing long COVID - which I've been transparent about - but also because my mother's dementia is worsening. Which I haven't chosen to talk openly about until now.
Dementia is a horrible terminal disease, and although my mother's has been kind to us as she still recognises the people closest to her and that is somewhat comforting as her world gets smaller and smaller, it is still devestating.
I am my mother's responsible person for everything - do your advance planning everyone! - and although we are well-organised this is still incredibly difficult and exhausting. For anyone who has waited for me to return emails or phone calls this is the primary reason, and again I thank you for your patience with my erratic schedule.
I will be travelling back to the mainland this weekend, returning next week, to help settle my mum into full-time care. The admin alone is astonishing, as those of you who have undertaken this process understand, but the details of moving a life from a home into a care facility is wrenching and fraught.
Have a good weekend and I'll see you soon,
Annetta

Happy #WoofWednesday to the Matinee Idol dog of our dreams Cully!!!
Today is Cully's 13th birthday - and we didn't plan on seeing him live this long due to kidney disease. However, life - like the impossibly handsome Malamute X Shepherd dog himself - keeps surprising us. We are thrilled and delighted to share Cully's birthday with you, and are grateful for all the love and support you show him.
We became a pack when Cully was only 8 weeks old, and I kept his original little blue leather collar for a long time. Fun Cully trivia: I put the collar on him before putting him in the travel crate when we brought him home, and to this day he hated being a naked dog. Cully will put his head back into the collar if it slips off. He's more than simply a pair of melting sherry-coloured eyes. Cully had fashion standards!
Yes, his collars remain blue. We use embroidered collars with his name and phone number to help keep him safe - even though he never runs off. Good boy Cully!!
Happy birthday to our most gorgeous boy, and we hope your day is as chilled and love-filled as Cully's.
